What a lovely morning. The last series of one of my favourite crime dramas, New Tricks started last night and I don't think I've come down yet.

At any rate, welcome back to Apoqliphoth's guide to the Monster Arena! We're getting into the more difficult fiends now; you'll want to have started level grinding by now; ideally having around 3/4 of the Sphere Grid covered for your main party.

Species Conquest Part 3[]

Jumbo Flan[]

Jumbo Flan
Dark Flan

HP: 1,300,000 (99,999)
AP: 10,000 (10,000)
Gil: 0
Vulnerabilities:

  • Darkness (100%)
  • Slow (100%)

Difficulty: Hard

Well, 'soft'. And very squishy. So squishy in fact that physical attacks don't do a thing to it. It's actually immune to physical damage. So this is a battle of Magic (or Overdrives). Unfortunately, it also has permanent Auto-Reflect, so really it's a case of spamming Ultima.
It uses all high-level Magic, including -aga spells as well as Flare and Ultima. It also has Regen, which you should dispel immediately. Bounce Slow off one of your party members to keep it in check. From there you have two choices.
Method 1: Doublecast Ultima: If you have One MP Cost and enough Magic power, this is a viable (though boring) tactic. Copycat it with your other characters and it won't take too long.
Method 2: Anima tank: Pain is the ideal counter to Jumbo's defences. It's both Magical and non-elemental, and the animation is shorter than Ultima. With Haste and Shell up, you should be blazing through Pains while taking sod all damage. At 99,999 damage (and you really want that), it'll take 14 Pains to put this thing down.
Sadly, you need to farm this thing for Magic Spheres. Why, Square, why.

AP: 10,000 (10,000)
Gil: 0
Vulnerabilities:

  • None

Difficulty: Hard

It absorbs every single element, and counters everything with Ultima. It has an even larger repertoire of magic than Jumbo Flan, throwing out Bio, Drain and Osmose. Thankfully it doesn't have Regen though.
The strategy here is identical to that of Jumbo Flan -- spam either Doublecast Ultima or Anima tank. It just takes longer because of its hair-trigger Ultima response. Boo.

Tanket[]

Tanket
Murussu

HP: 900,000 (10,000)
AP: 10,000 (10,000)
Gil: 0
Vulnerabilities:

  • Armour Break (10%)
  • Mental Break (1%)

Difficulty: Medium

Remember when I said there was one exception to the Anima tanking strategy? Well, this guy is it. His name is in fact very misleading, as you must not use Anima tank here, or any other Aeon for that matter. His Rush Attack is like a regular attack, but it both delays your turn and increases his speed at the same time. What this means is that it will attack constantly until the Aeon is KO'd, without giving you a turn.

Or worse. If your Aeon is under Regen and is gaining more HP per turn than Tanket can deal with Rush Attack, you're stuck. Because Tanket is programmed to use Rush Attack until the target is KO'd, it will never stop attacking and you'll have to hard reset your game.
Throw out a Frag Grenade or Banishing Blade to crack those defences, then get to work. You should be nearing 99,999 damage on your main melee character, otherwise this battle will go on too long.
This is another highly farm-worthy monster due to its common Defence Sphere drop.

Fafnir[]

Fafnir
Nidhogg (FFX)

HP: 1,100,000 (13,000)
AP: 10,000 (10,000)
Gil: 0
Vulnerabilities:

  • All "Breaks" (5%)

Difficulty: Medium

Banishing Blade is your opener of choice -- it uses both physical and magical attacks, and you'll be hitting it physically anyway, so 3 out of 4 warrants Full Break.
Its Triple Attack hits first with a physical that's unaffected by Protect, then a random breath attack (Fire, Ice or Lightning) followed by a third physical that does consider Protect.
It seems to have a strange affiliation with the damage limit. Triple Attack physicals can't break 9,999, but its regular physical can. Its fire breath can break 9,999, but its ice and lightning breaths can't. Whatevs, brah.
Have equipped as much Element Eater armour as possible to nullify his breath attacks, otherwise NulElement Magic is a thing. Like most of the other Conquest creations, Anima tanking works well here. As do Ifrit and Ixion due to their respective elemental absorption, though their stats are greatly inferior to Anima's.

Conditions for Unlocking:
Capture at least four of every Drake fiend.
