The Zeus Cannon is a superweapon in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. The brainchild of General Hein, it is intended to obliterate the Phantoms' nest in the Leonid Meteor.

The Zeus Cannon was first conceived by the United States Military Force (USMF) in 2055 during the construction of the barrier cities around the world. Consequently, the planning of the Zeus Cannon halted the construction of many barrier cities. The outer framework was finally completed six years later, but tests on the Zeus Cannon's internal workings continued on even five years after its completion.

[edit] Official Stats

  • Olympic-class Assault Space Station

Equipped with two heliotron devices; 6 million ampere class helical type nuclear fusion furnace as a power source. The heliotrons generate a 120 giga joule magnetic field inside the Zeus Cannon’s barrel (acceleration chamber).

A 100km radius from the Zeus is a restricted area where unshielded shuttles and soldiers cannot enter, due to the risk of being exposed to radiation of nuclear/spiritual energy from the reactive nuclear thruster and giant OVO tank.

The habitat inside of the giant space station is located within a magnetic field gauge. It has no contact points with the station frame, thus it is protected from the nuclear/spiritual energy emission shock.

The original design concept was to have included consecutive firing capability up to 200 times. However, in the pre-critical launch test conducted in 2063, a series of malfunctions occurred (such as the expansion of material by heat inside the acceleration chamber, warping the orbital path from the launch shock wave, numerous cracks on the cooling system pipeline, and coolant leaks).

The expansion of material caused by the difference of temperature inside the barrel, contraction rate, and launch shock wave were noted as substantial dangers and capable of destroying the barrel itself with only a few launches.

General Hein was desperate to use the Zeus Cannon to destroy the Phantoms nest, but the Council instead had chosen to follow Dr. Sid's proposal for a much harmless method; mostly for respect on his major contributions to the survival of the human race against the Phantoms.

To persuade the Council to follow his method, General Hein went to the New York Barrier City shield generator station and ordered his men to disable the shields. The Phantoms entered the barrier city with no trouble, and traveled the energy streams, causing a major infestation. The Council, who had seen the dreams Aki had about the Phantoms thanks to General Hein, and the belief that the Phantoms had become immune to the shields, finally authorized the use of the Zeus Cannon.

The general traveled to the Zeus Cannon and began powering the superweapon, pointing it towards the Leonid Meteor. The first shot awakens the alien Gaia and spawned more Phantoms. Desperate to prove he is right when Aki Ross attempted to persuade him not to use the Cannon, General Hein ordered more shots on the meteor. Finally, the Zeus Cannon had reached its maximum capacity, and when its final shot was fired, its reactors exploded, and the Zeus Cannon was destroyed.
