Zalera (Summon)

From Final Fantasy Wiki

"Heretic scion who wrapped the world in dark energies, seeking to take the souls of all living things unto himself. Created in opposition to Emet-Selch, Angel of Truth, and scion of light. Originally tasked with the judging of men upon their deaths, his soul was tainted by the curses of those who raged against the heavens, and seizing one of the gods' servants, a shamaness, as a hostage, he rebelled against his creators. Even now, in defeat, he clutches the shamaness to him in his right arm, and with the aid of her death-wail does he summon the soul of darkness to do his bidding."
Clan Primer Bio

Zalera the Death Seraph (死の天使ザルエラ Shi no Tenshi Zaruera lit. Zalera the Angel of Death) is an Esper from the world of Ivalice. The Esper of Death, he represents the Zodiac sign of Gemini, the Twins. The shamaness grafted onto his right wing represents his twin. From his power of Death, his color sign is Violet. He is also referred to as the Mithuna Ascendant, which is the Sanskrit name of its Zodiac sign as used in Jyotish (Hindu) astrology. He is based on Zalera, the Death Seraph from Final Fantasy Tactics.

Condemnation
A Non-Elemental attack, and Zalera's ultimate attack. Zalera warps the enemy to a dead plane, and opening his right arm, reveals the shamaness. The shamaness screams with death-wail, calling up a storm of dark souls. The souls then unite in a purple cloud. Zalera then laughs cruelly, spins and closes his wing, pointing at the enemy. The souls pour from the cloud, landing as a viscous liquid, before the souls suddenly rise again, taking the shape of small black twisters as the image turns negative. Its damage is the target's Max HP, with a damage cap of 9999.

Main article: Zalera (Revenant Wings)
Zalera in Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
"Death Seraph who scathes foes with angelic light."
—In-game Description

Zalera returns, along with some other Espers, in Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings as a Non-Elemental Ranged Rank III summon. Though his nature is Holy, he is not classified as a healing unit like Ultima, because Zalera cannot actually heal units, rather harnessing the power of light for devastating attacks. Chaos or Exodus must be obtained on the Ring of Pacts before Zalera's node can be reached. Zalera is fought at the Paramina Rift in Mission 74: Dance of the Dead. Defeating him earns Basch his quickening, Apocalypse Shield.

Zalera uses:

  • Holy: Deals damage to one foe, Zombies and Vampyrs are weak to it.
  • Holyja: The same holy, but stronger and hits every foe in range.

[edit] Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift

Zalera appears as a Scion. He can be called by anyone equipping the Earrings of the Dead when the Smash Gauge turns orange. When summoned, his performs his Wrath, Condemnation, which does dark-elemental damage to all foes and inflicts both Sleep and Doom. An interesting note to mention is that during the mission to recruit Montblanc, he calls them the Reaper's Ring. The earrings are obtained by completing the quest The Last Step, the final quest in the step sequence.

[edit] Trivia

  • Zalera's singular dark angelic wing with draping cloth may also be a reference to Sephiroth's wing and coat combination. The grafting of himself to the shamaness is similar to Sephiroth utilizing incarnations of Jenova as bio weapons. His goal of destroying the planet to absorb its energy is also similar to Zalera's ambitions. Another interesting note is that the Zalera Lucavi demon of FF Tactics choses Marquis Elmdore as a host. Elmdore heavily resembles Sephiroth and uses the Masamune, Sephiroth's signature blade. Also if you reread Zalera's clan primer it directly quotes Sephiroth's intentions from Final Fantasy VII "...heretic scion who wrapped the world in dark energies, seeking to take the souls of all living things unto himself.." Sephiroth's main intentions in Final Fantasy VII was to use the meteor to crash into the earth to weaken it, so he could completely absorb the lifestream. Another hint is where Zalera is found, Terminus No. 7. Finally his counter is Emet-Selch, Angel of Truth, which hints at Sephiroth's counter part Cloud.
  • Zalera uses Kefka's trademark laughter while using Condemnation.
