The Wind Crystal (風のクリスタル, Kaze no Kurisutaru?), also called Crystal of Wind and Crystal of Air, is a recurring plot element in the Final Fantasy series. One of the four elemental Crystals, it holds the energy of Wind, one of the four main elements, and it is associated with the power of air and the strength of the winds. In Final Fantasy III and Final Fantasy V it gives the basic Job classes of each game. The color green is mostly used for the Wind Crystal.
The Wind Crystal can be found in the Flying Fortress in the original Final Fantasy and it is the fourth and last crystal visited by the Warriors of Light. 400 years before the rise of the Warriors of Light, Tiamat attacked the Lufenians, conquering their Flying Fortress, and began to corrupt the Wind Crystal, causing the winds to stop blowing. After she is defeated at the Flying Fortress, the Wind Crystal is restored to its original shine.
The Wind Crystal can be found in the Altar Cave near the town of Ur in Final Fantasy III, and it is the first crystal visited by the Warriors of Light. In both versions, it is corrupted by the Land Turtle, but in the NES version, it gives the Warriors of Light the Warrior, the Monk, the White Mage, the Black Mage, and the Red Mage jobs after the Land Turtle is defeated.
However, in the 3D versions, Luneth must meet with Arc, Refia, Ingus, and defeat the Djinn for the Wind Crystal to grant its blessing upon the Warriors of Light. After lifting Djinn's curse from Sasune, the Crystal grants the warriors the Warrior, the Monk, the White Mage, the Black Mage, the Red Mage, and the Thief Jobs.
The Wind Crystal is kept by the monk kingdom of Fabul, and is the third Crystal obtained by the kingdom of Baron. Cecil, Edward and Yang fend off the Red Wings when they attack Fabul, but after being pushed back to the Crystal Room, Cecil is defeated by his friend Kain, now serving the new Red Wings commander Golbez, and Golbez shortly after appears and kidnaps Rosa while Kain seizes the Wind Crystal. In older translations, it was called Crystal of Air.
The Wind Crystal is silently shedding its light inside the Crystal Chamber in Fabul behind the throne room.
The Wind Crystal is stolen by Kain during an attack on Fabul by the Red Wings. Yang's daughter Ursula attempts to prevent Kain from taking the Crystal and battles him with her father, but they are unable to stop Kain from taking it and fleeing. Later, when Kain is defeated at Baron, the party retrieves the Crystals he has from him, but the Mysterious Girl takes them from the party again soon after. Along with the other eight Crystals, the Wind Crystal is retrieved from the Depths of the True Moon after the Creator has been felled.
The Wind Crystal is kept by the kingdom of Tycoon, and was kept in the Wind Shrine. It is the first crystal visited by the Warriors of Light. Along with the other crystals, it seals Exdeath on Bartz's World. The essence of wind is said to be passion which is a prominent trait of Bartz Klauser.
Thirty years after Exdeath is sealed, the Wind Crystal shatters and as Bartz, Lenna, Galuf, and Faris visit it, they are made Warriors of Light and granted the power of the Crystals. The shards of the broken Crystal grant them the Knight, the Monk, the Thief, the White Mage, the Black Mage, and the Blue Mage Jobs.
In the epilogue, the Wind Crystal reforms inside the Island Shrine.
The Wind Crystal initially becomes sealed inside Linaly for protection, by Mid Previa's doing. In short time, the Wind Crystal becomes stolen from Ra Devil to use with the rest of the crystals for his own evil deeds.
The Crystal of Wind is located in Pazuzu's Tower near Windia and is the last crystal visited by Benjamin. It is corrupted by Pazuzu, which causes the winds to rage violently. When restored by Benjamin and Kaeli, the wind returns to normal.
The Crystal of Wind is located on the continent of Harena, and is found in the Temple of Wind, just south of the city of Ancheim. It is tended to by Agnès Oblige, the current vestal of wind. Early on, it is corrupted by darkness, causing the wind to cease. This places a hardship on the city of Ancheim, which is reliant on the wind to power their city.
Agnès, with the help of her traveling companions is able to defeat the evil that has infected the crystal, and subsequently performs the Rite of Awakening, which purifies the crystal. It is later revealed that performing this rite actually overstimulated the Wind Crystal and is part of a process to link multiple parallel versions of Luxendarc.
