The Wii U is a video game console from Nintendo and the successor to the Wii. It was released worldwide beginning in the Fall of 2012.
Together with the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, the Wii U is an eighth-generation home console. It is Nintendo's twelfth game system overall, and its sixth home system.
Just as its predecessor was the first system to incorporate spatial motion controls, the Wii U is notable for its use of a multi-mode touchscreen gamepad as its primary controller, as well as being the first Nintendo console to natively support HD video output.
The Wii U is unique in that it offers a higher degree of backward compatibility than current competitors, as it is able to make use of Wii games and accessories in addition to providing a library of Virtual Console software spanning all previous Nintendo hardware. Yet, in spite of such flexibility, no titles in the main Final Fantasy series have been released for the console outside of Japan.
