The Whale Whisker (鯨の髭, Kujira no Hige?), also called Baleen and Whale Tusk, is a recurring weapon in the Final Fantasy series, mostly serving as the strongest rod or pole.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy IX[]

The Whale Whisker is the strongest rod for Dagger. It teaches Curaga and Life. It is found in the Ocean chocograph, and can be sold for 5,140 gil. It has an Attack power of 36. Obtaining it yields The Ultimate Rod achievement/trophy in the versions that support an achievements system.

Final Fantasy XII[]

In the original PlayStation 2 version, the Whale Whisker is the strongest pole with an Attack power of 108. Its license can be found in the top-left section of the weapon area of the License Board and costs 125 LP. Like other poles, the Whale Whisker grants the wielder +25 to Evasion. Poles' attack speed is average. It is known a "Whisker of the Beast" in the bazaar price list and costs 60,000 gil.

In the Zodiac versions, it now provides 108 Attack, 30 Evade, 25 CT, 15% combo rate, and requires the Whale Whisker license for 90 LP. It can be found as a treasure in the Lhusu Mines (Site 6 North) and Cerobi Steppe (Feddik River), and also rarely stolen from a bangaa called Master Joe in Trial Mode Stage 66. It can be equipped by the Monk class.

The stronger version, Kanya, provides 112 Attack, 35 Evade, 25 CT, 35% combo rate, has a 10% chance of inflicting Immobilize on a target, and requires the Kanya license for 180 LP. It can be bought from the bazaar for 60,000 gil by selling Mythril x3, Corpse Fly x3, and Aquarius Gem x4.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings[]

Description

The Whale Whisker is one of Kytes's rods. It is Water-elemental and makes Kytes's attacks pierce through multiple enemies in a line extending from him. Its recipe is found in Tempered in Ice. It uses a generic rod sprite during battle.

Description

The Whale Whisker is the ultimate pole for Mystics and Arithmeticians. It can be poached from Tiamat (rare) or caught from high-level enemy Ninjas. It can also be obtained via Melee. Its Attack power is 16 with a Weapon Evade of 20%.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift[]

The Whale Whisker is the ultimate pole, obtainable in one of the Heritor job quests. It teaches Wermut to the Heritor. It is obtained after completing the Wermut sidequest in Zedlei Forest.

The tusk of a giant ocean-going beast. Resilient like a rope but harder than steel.

Description

Whale Tusk is a high-ranked spear which provides 129 Attack, +25 to Stun, and has one available slot for jewels. It can be equipped by all races.

Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy[]

Whale Whisker is a level 90 exclusive weapon for Kuja and provides +287 HP, -70 Bravery, +63 Attack, +1 Defense, and +5% EX Force Absorption. It can be obtained by trading 158,000 gil, Punisher, Electrum, and Reaper's Dream x5.

Etymology[]

The Whale Whisker derives its name from the Japanese name, which is also translated as baleen. Baleen are the many fibers that covered the inside mouths of baleen whales. Such material was used in fishing rods and sword hilts, as well in clothing and many items before the introduction of plastic, and was in high demand because of its durability and flexibility.
