Template:Sideicon Template:FFX Enemy Wendigo is an Ogre-type fiend in Final Fantasy X, encountered after the party fights Maester Seymour for the first time. Escaping from Macalania Temple, Yuna and her guardians will be pursued by Guado Guardians. Once the Lake Road is reached, Wendigo will appear flanked by two Guado.

Battle

Like the battle with Seymour, whenever Wendigo is attacked, one of the guards will counter by using a Potion. Stealing from them will prevent this action. The Guards are fairly weak themselves and will go down easily, but their final action will be to cast Shell and Protect on the monster. This can be prevented by having Kimahri use his Stone Breath Overdrive on them. Wendigo is immune to the Petrify effect, but the Guado guardians won't be so lucky.

Wendigo has four variants of its physical attack (with two different animations), all of which are used. The first two versions differ only in accuracy; version A has a base accuracy of 90 while version B has a base accuracy of 120. Version C is perfectly accurate and 25% more powerful than A and B, while version D is also perfectly accurate, 50% more powerful than A and B, and has a 50% chance of shattering a petrified character as opposed to the 10% chance the other versions have.

  • Version A is used only when below 9000 HP, with a 66% chance on each attacking turn.
  • Version B is used under the same circumstances, but when above 9000 HP.
  • Version C is the version used for his counter.
  • Version D is used 33% of the time (regardless of HP) on attacking turns, and always targets the lowest HP character.

Strategy

Wendigo has lots of HP and will be in Berserk status from the beginning of the battle, meaning a single attack is likely to KO any character; casting Provoke or Esuna will remove the Berserk status. If Dispel is not yet at Yuna's disposal to deal with Protect and Shell, Ixion's Aerospark will be able to neutralize them. Auron's Power Break will reduce its strength and Wakka's Dark Attack or Sleep Attack has a good chance of success. Tidus's Delay Attack is also useful to slow Wendigo down.

Once Wendigo's HP falls past 9,000 he will raise his arms and counter any physical attack. If the going is tough and Wendigo's Defense is proving difficult to get around, Summoning Ixion and using Aerospark will negate the Protect and Shell statuses.

Following the battle, Wendigo will crack the ice with a powerful leap and the party will fall into a deep crevasse under Macalania Temple.
