Template:Sideicon Template:FFI Enemies The Warmech, also known as the Death Machine, is an infamous foe from the original Final Fantasy. Located in the Flying Fortress on the bridge leading to Tiamat, it has a 3 in 64 chance of appearing each time the Warriors of Light enter a battle on the bridge.
Although in the Dawn of Souls remake onwards Warmech is no longer the most powerful enemy in the game, it is still a formidable foe. It could be said that Warmech is the first superboss in the series.

Battle
The Warmech is extremely powerful, rivaling Chaos himself in some versions of the game, and has the powerful ability Atomize that can quickly devastate the party. It regenerates 5% of its HP every round in all remakes (this was meant to be 2 HP per round on the NES – a direct parallel to Poison, but regeneration is bugged and does not work in that version).
Warmech often gets a preemptive strike, which can make the battle even harder, especially if it kills any party members before the player even gets a turn.
If the party kills Warmech, they are rewarded with a great amount EXP and gil, the most of any enemy in the game.
Strategy
Players should start the battle by casting Blink or Invisira. The player should use Haste on the fighters as first move, if the party's Black Mage/Red Mage lives long enough to do it. The party's White Mage should be saved for exclusive healing. In the end, whether the player kills Warmech or not depends on what level the characters are, how well equipped the party is, what condition the party is in before the fight begins, and how lucky the player is. Most often Warmech battles quickly turn into pure desperation as the party dies one by one.
This fight is somewhat easier in the NES version due to the Warmech only having 1,000 HP and non-functional regeneration, as opposed to future releases where it has 2,000 HP and recovers 100 every round.

Trivia
- Warmech appears in The Final Fantasy Legend and Final Fantasy Legend II (otherwise known as SaGa and SaGa II in Japan) with the same design, though his name was localized to English as "Machine" in the first game and "WarMach" in the second.
- A Ghost Card in Dissidia Final Fantasy bears the name "DeathMachine". It is a Level 52 Garland, and has a Warp Cube and Cyan Gem to be won via Battlegen.
- Nintendo once held a "Get your name in a video game" contest involving photographing the Warmech. The winner, Chris Houlihan, would get his name in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, which appeared as text in a hidden room, but late in development, the conventional entryway to this secret room was removed. Rather than replacing the door, the text appearing within the room was modified, possibly to reference the difficulty involved with finding the room.
- A Warmech appears in the web comic 8-Bit Theater. His debut comic is titled 1/64, referencing the chances of encountering a Warmech on the bridge in Final Fantasy.
