Intro of Darkness
Edit
Wassup! You seem to have stumbled across my walkthrough, random user of this wiki. Welcome (again) to my walkthrough of the PAL/International version of Final Fantasy X. If you don't know already, this version is a bit different to the standard American version because of various aspects, but most prominently the Dark Aeons: A set of difficult superbosses which were not included in the original. Inevitably, they will be covered by my sorry self, which will obviously take the extra hours, but I'll do it for you guys. I'm that nice! And without further ado, let's start.
The Gameplay
Edit
- Final Fantasy X includes a battle system called the CTB System (or Conditional Turn Based System for the naughty people haven't learnt their abbreviations properly) in which characters take turns to attack in battle, but with no ATB system present as in other Final Fantasies, so you get unlimited time to make your choices. I enjoy using this system, though I do prefer what Final Fantasy XIII did with the ATB system. "Conditional" isn't just a flashy word, though, it actually means something; it is not fully turn based because various aspects affect the timeline of turns (on the top right of the screen in battle). These include use of Time Magic and abilities such as Delay Attack.
- The leveling up system is among the best in the series, it is called the sphere grid. I will explain it a bit later, but it is basically a huge grid that you use spheres to advance in (... I know).
- This game has its own version of the role system, with each character's section of the sphere grid containing different magics and skills corresponding to that specific "job". For example, Lulu is a black mage (she also wears mostly black) and she learns spells such as Fire and Drain, Yuna is a white mage/summoner (she wears mostly white) and learns spells like Cure and Esuna and Kimahri is a Blue Mage (he's blue... do you see a pattern emerging here?) and he doesn't learn very much in the sphere grid, him excelling in his large amount of overdrives he learns as his form of blue magic. I'll get onto the characters' stuff during the walkthrough though.
- Also, Final Fantasy X gives its own version of the Limit Break system, where the user must fill up a bar during battle and then they can use special abilities. This system also includes various "Overdrive Modes" in which the overdrive bar increases at different rates and at different times depending on which one you have equipped. For example, Stoic (the default one) increases the overdrive bar by getting hit by the opponent, and Healer increases by, believe it or not, healing another character (but only if they actually need healing). Since there is so much to say about overdrives, I'll put all the info in a separate page... eventually.
Controls 'nd stuff

Moving and actions
Edit
If you apply a basic concept, you should be fine: left hand to steer, right hand to do stuff. I won't do a complicated explanation or tables - too time consuming for us all.
Sphere Grid
Edit
As I mentioned before, this grid uses items called "spheres" to use. These can be dropped by enemies or stolen/bribed. This is the main place where your characters level up and increase stats. Everybody has their own unique section of the Sphere Grid, which are blocked from each other at the start, and different sections can be unlocked by obtaining special spheres. So, basically, throughout the storyline, you'll be working through each characters own sphere grid (usually, I may state otherwise through the walkthrough), but when you finish theirs and go onto other people's sections, everyone will eventually become the same as each other, save for overdrives (similar to FF7 and the materia system).

Added by Zomgmeister- The Sphere Grid is an advanced system in which you must manually increase your stat points and learn abilities, which can be a bit of a pain sometimes, but pays of big time (who doesn't want everyone to be able to steal and heal?).
- To advance in the sphere grid, you must gain AP, which is expendible if enough is gained to achieve a sphere level. After a certain number of AP, and a sphere level is gained, these sphere levels can be used to progress once forward, or up to four times backwards (as long as you have already been there).
- Moving around the grid mindlessly is hopeless unless you have spheres to use along the way. Each node corresponds to different spheres, like an Ability sphere can be used to gain an ability (oh, joy), if the character is near the node, and power spheres can increase strength, HP, defence. Other, rarer spheres can be gained to perform specific functions, like access nodes already attained by other characters, and spheres to make an empty node have a new stat in it (which basically allows you to completely reform the whole grid).
- If people come to the end of their section, they can get into other sections by using special spheres called Key Spheres, which come in four varieties: Lv.1, Lv.2, Lv. 3 and (to everyone's shock) Lv.4.
- There are two versions of the sphere grid, Standard and Expert, expert having less nodes. Details are at the Sphere Grid main page.
Playable Characters
Edit
This is the poor lot that have to have you play as them during the game. These guys will each be explained in detail when their time comes. This order is the order in which they are acquired fully.
And, no. I don't know why they are drawn without clothes (apart from Auron and Tidus, sort of).
Temporary Playable Characters
Edit
Yep, just one (as with most games).
Hey ho, away we go.
Edit
Let's start. As you can see, this walkthrough is in progress, so expect many mistakes. I will go through the whole thing when I'm finished to scan for mistakes, but you can change them yourself if you want, as long as you tell me first.
