[edit] More Blitzball!
Allright, after a short cutscene (I believe there's one), you'll come to a save point. Save your game. You'll now be able to play Blitzball. The game will also teach you how to scout and recruit players (you can only have 8 signees at a time). I've pretty much done all the Blitzball I need with the original Auroch ballclub, save a few early matches against the Al Bhed Psyches, and the goalie position. But if you're new, I suggest getting some of the better recruits. One of them is Wedge, who is at the Stadium entrance, near the stairs that go to the bleachers. He's a great forward and can do everything but pass the ball (replace Datto with him). The other important player is Jumal, who is a goalie you'll probably want to use against the Al Bhed Psyches. He's in the plaza. There are also two lesser important players. You can also pick up Zev Ronso at Pier 5 outside the stadium, but he's a tad bit slow (he plays center). Same with Zalitz, who plays defense. He's at the Sphere theater. I reccommend just getting Jumal and Wedge.
Now, for the games. You can opt to play in a 10 game round robin league with the other five teams Ronso Fangs, Guado Glories, Kilika Beasts, Luca Goers, and Al Bhed Psyches, or in a 6 team elimination tournament. Tourneys come up every so often. What you want to do is start a league, and then play games until a tournament is available with the winning prize being the Attack Reels. Win that tourney for the prize. Use Jumal and Wedge against the Psyches, and whoever you want against the other teams. I'm bringing up the Psyches because they are INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TO BEAT. They have some of the best forwards early on in the game in Eigaar and Blappa, a great shooting center in Berrik and, worst of all, far and away the game's best goalie in Nimrook. You're going to want to recruit him when his contract expires, and you won't be able to reach him until much later in the game. You'll HAVE to use technique shots AND have a fast break to even have a CHANCE at a goal against him. The other tough teams right now are the Fangs and the Glories. The Fangs are great tacklers and tackle breakers, but are slow and can't block. The Glories are the opposite of the Fangs. The Goers are a well rounded team that's easy to beat if you can shut Abus down, and the Beasts, well, the Beasts suck.
So win those Attack Reels in the tourney (a new Overdrive for Wakka) and move on. Don't finish the league until you fight 400 battles with the Attack Reels in your possession (you don't have to use them; that would take forever).
[edit] Mi'ihen, You'hen we all hen for Cohen
Welcome to the Mi'ihen Highroad! This is a long place with lots of things to see.
Your first fight here will be against a Raldo. You may remember these guys from Final Fantasy VIII. This is a tutorial battle for Auron. Most of his weapons have the Piercing ability (Kimahri's do, too), which allow Auron (and Kimahri) to do normal damage to armored foes. Raldos and their palette swaps are armored, as are the dragon-type enemies you'll face later. After this fight, Auron will join your party. Speaking of Raldos, they drop armor with Berserk protection, which can be useful for areas where you're getting Berserked a lot.
The next enemy here is the Mi'ihen Fang. This guy is a weakling except for the statuses it sometimes inflicts with its physical. Its drops include armor with Sleep and Silence protection (the statuses it can cause). The Floating Eye, which you may remember from Final Fantasy IV, is next. This is one of the first enemies that can actually kill you. It's flying, for one, so only Wakka can hit it (Tidus and Kimahri have chances at it, too, but Wakka is your best bet at these flying foes), and it can inflict Confusion with its physicals, and it LOVES to do this. Having a party member confused in this game is absolutely dangerous considering you only use three party members (I miss the days where you got 4 of them). And its drops suck; they're just stat boosts. There are also Bombs here, and assuming you've played FF games before, you know these guys. They can use Self-Destruct if hit three times, so take them down with your strongest attacks. Overdrives, and Lulu's Blizzard spell help out a lot, as do ice-elemental weapons (remember you can change weapons mid-battle in this; first time since the good ol' days that you can do this). If Kimahri uses Lancet on it, he'll learn Self-Destruct as a Ronso Rage. Lastly, they drop armors with fire protection. Another, rarer enemy is the White Element. You should know how these things work by now. A Fire spell from Lulu should take it down. Note that these guys can drop armor with Ice Immunity rarely, so try to get a bunch of these.
The last enemy here is the Dual Horn. This guy is incredibly powerful with his physicals, and has a lot more HP than anyone you've faced up to this point (1875 HP!!!). There's nothing else special about this guy other than the fact Kimahri can learn Fire Breath from it. They'll occasionally drop a weapon that has a random Mute casting kicking in. Have Wakka use his Dark Attack on these things if they're giving you trouble.
If you can tell, this is the first actual dangerous place in the game. And it's long, too; save points are far away from each other. But there's also a lot of fun things to do while you're here. BE SURE TO TALK TO ALL THE PEOPLE YOU CAN FIND HERE. Many of them give you stuff. One person will give you 2 Antidotes and another will give you a Remedy.
Try to get Valefor's Overdrive gauge up, but don't use it.
First, you'll meet an old man near the statue on the left. He'll introduce himself as Maechen, and he'll tell you a little history of the Mi'ihen Highroad. Apparently he was the founder of the Crusaders. And he had to persuade the fundie-run governmnet in Spira that he was legit. And he did it. You'll also meet an elite group of Crusaders: the Chocobo Knights. Their leader is Lucil, who I SWEAR is probably played by Alex Borstein. Well, she sounds like Lois Griffin, no? The others are Elma and the only guy in the group: CLAZ-KO. He's probably the most feminine of them though.
Next, you'll meet Belgemine, an aged Princess Leia who will make you fight her. However, Square decided to go all Pokey-Man on us and makes us fight with Aeons. She'll summon Ifrit. You'll have to summon Valefor. Belgemine will give you a lesson on how to have Aeons use Shield and Boost, which increase either defense or Overdrive charge rate at the expense of the other. Hopefully your Overdrive will be full when you enter. Start off with that, and use Blizzard to finish it off. If you win, you get an Echo Ring, which will protect Yuna from Silence occasionally (sadly, it doesn't provide immunity). If you lose, you'll get a Seeker's Ring, which increases Yuna's HP by 5%.
Now, it's time to enter the next area.
There's a stray Blitzball in this area. DO NOT KICK IT. If you don't, you'll get three Softs. There's a chest in this area with a Phoenix Down. A Crusader here will give you an Ether. Another person will give you 3 Eye Drops (fun fact: these are the ONLY Eyedrops in the game you can get in places other than a store!). You'll also meet a little girl and her mother, who will start acting helpless and will beg Yuna to defeat Sin. You'll also learn about the Calm. Apparently Sin has a permanent Life 3 spell and resurrects after he dies. You'd think they'd find a way to beat him permanently (like set up a research lab or something), but NO.
In the next area, you'll meet a girl named Shelinda. She automatically made my "I hate this character" list because she looks too much like Ultimecia. She'll tell you that the big thing the Crusaders are working on is going to involve illegal machina. She's been trying to stop it. Wakka gets furious at this and Lulu tells Tidus that certain machines are illegal under Yevonism. Anyway, continue on.
Here's a list of items which I can't locate the exact location of. Tell me where they are.
- Level 1 Key Sphere
- Ice Brand (Ice-elemental sword for Tidus)
- Hunter Spear (Weapon for Kimahri that has Sensor)
- Red Ring (Fire resistant armor for Yuna)
Regarding that Level 1 Key Sphere, you've probably guessed that it opens Level 1 locks on the Sphere Grid. TAKE MY ADVICE, AND USE IT TO SEND KIMAHRI TO THE LOWER LEFT PORTION OF THE SPHERE GRID. The part that has the Steal node in it. Stealing is VERY important in this game, and you need to have as many people with this ability as soon as you can.
Before entering the fourth area, equip EVERYONE with armor that provides Ice resistance or immunity.
[edit] Exit left for Flying J's
Okay, Auron has to take a piss (or at least we infer this), so it's time to stop. Wakka, the racist he is, decides he wants to boycott the store because it's owned by an Al Bhed. So go inside. Later, Yuna will be sitting on a cliff. Tidus will walk up and talk to her. Yuna explains that Sin is a punishment for everyone's sins, and it'll go away permanently once people stop sinning. Tidus will also do a very, very, VERY bad Mika impression. Or maybe a bad Yoda impression. Or both. The point is, it sucks. Just like Tidus sucks. Yuna explains that she has to beat Sin by traveling to every Yevon Temple and then to the Zanarkand ruins to get the Final Aeon, which is the only weapon that can beat Sin. Sounds like rubbish to me. Will someone PLEASE start a lab? Maybe it's too expensive to start up manually and the theocratic government won't provide a grant because they'll use forbidden machina. But what about the Al Bhed? Or are they too poor?
The next morning, you'll meet a man who sounds like a diplomat. He's Al Bhed, and he says he's trying to forge a bond between the Yevonists and the Al Bheds. He says his name is Rin and he'll give you the Al Bhed Primer VIII. If you haven't figured it out yet, these things decode Al Bhed and translate it into English; the pink letters are the translated ones. By now you should have the letters A-H translated. So hopefully you can figure out what some of this jibberish actually is.
But WAIT!!! There's something eating the Chocobos outside! What the hell is it? It's a rejected Manky Kong design! Or a rejected Kong entirely! It's the Chocobo Eater! What a generic name for a boss. Well, at least it isn't as lame as Tros.....
You'll get a pair of Mega-Potions before going to battle.
Now, this boss is actually harder if you're like me and you overlevel! Why? Well, the object isn't to get rid of all his HP (he has 10,000 of it). The object is to push him off the cliff behind you! You'll get better items if you do this. And it's hard because you don't want to overdamage him. You also don't want to get pushed off the cliff behind you. Now, you'll want to start by having Tidus cast Haste on someone who can deal 500 HP damage each turn with an attack, but no more than 1,000 HP. This person is usually Lulu with her Fire spell (the Chocobo Eater is weak to Fire). You also need to be able to deal lots of damage quickly with some of your characters. You see, the Chocobo Eater falls over every 1,201 HP damage taken (not necessarily in one attack), and when it falls over, you can push it back with every 500 HP damage (not necessarily in one attack, but you want to do this in one attack). So you need to keep a close watch on how much damage you deal. Have Tidus cast Slow on the Chocobo Eater if you feel like taking a risk.
As for the Chocobo Eater's attacks, you need to watch out for its rushing physical attack, which pushes you back and deals gravity-based damage to your party (It can't kill you). Fist of Fury is also nasty and it can deal upwards of 1,000 HP damage. It'll say "You're next!" before using this attack. When fallen over, it can counter with Blizzard if it's low on HP, so I hope you have everyone equipped with the proper armor. You need to push him back three times from his starting position to knock him off the cliff. He needs to push you back twice for him to knock you off. If you push him off, you'll get a bunch of Level 1 Key Spheres.
As for the store here? It sells weapons that boost Strength or Magic Power, depending on your sex (strength for guys, magic for girls, sexist pigs) by 3%. Except Auron and Kimahri, who can buy empty slotted weapons. All the armor sold here boosts Magic Defense by 3%.
Well, because you beat that thing you can now rent a Chocobo for free. But don't do that. Real men walk on foot. It's good exercise. And you need it, you couch potato you. Go north and cross the bridges. In the Newroad-North area, you'll find the Al Bhed Primer IX, which translates the letter I for you. It's well hidden and on the ground. I suggest running around pressing X like a schoolgirl till you find it. These areas have the same enemies as the previous ones, but in new formations (for example, you may fight three Bombs in one formation at this point).
When you reach the north end of the Highroad, save your game. There's a chest with two Hi-Potions here. You'll find Dona here whining to the guards because she wants to pass. But the thing that's going on, Operation Mi'ihen, keeps the entire road closed. Don't go in just yet. There's still some work to do!
[edit] The canyon
If you exit to the southeast you'll find yourself in a canyon. There are some new enemies here. First is the Thunder Flan, which is what Hecko X would be if he had no bones. It should be pretty obvious that this guy uses lots of Thunder spells. Physical attacks won't work, so have Lulu cast Water (or Watera if she knows it; better that if you want the Overkill, which you do). It drops lightning elemental weapons, lightning resistant armor, and very rarely it drops armor with lightning immunity. Both armors will have the same name (Yellow-type armor), but you'll have to check the abilities to see whether it has lightning resistance or full immunity.
Next is the Vouivre, which is a fire breathing dragon. But he looks so puny to be a dragon. Do NOT underestimate him; his breath attack is VERY powerful and hits everyone. He also has very high defense and only Kimahri and Auron can deal normal damage to him with their Piercing weapons. It's weak to Ice, so Lulu's Blizzard and Blizzara work well, as do ice elemental katanas. It drops random elemental weapons, weapons that increase your Strength or Magic Power, and armor that either increases your max HP or provides resistance to Slow (not immunity).
The Ipiria is me in my lizard form. It can cause some nasty statuses with its physical, but other than that it's pretty weak. Physical attacks from Tidus and Kimahri should do it in. It drops the same stuff the Vouivre drops, except that the armor it drops can increase Defense instead of HP.
So anyway, head all the way to the south along the canyon to the end and you'll find a chest with a Mars Crest. You'll need this for Auron's ultimate weapon, so make sure you get it.
NOW, go all the way back to the save point at the North End and hop on a free Chocobo. There's some chests you can only reach with your feathered friend. You can jump where you see Chocobo Feathers lying on the ground. From the top part of the Highroad, you can reach a chest with a Heat Lance for Kimahri (this is a fire elemental spear). From the canyon, you can get a Scout for Wakka (this is another Sensor weapon), a Thunder Blade, a lightning-elemental katana for Auron, and a Fortune Sphere. These VERY RARE spheres activate Luck Nodes on the Sphere Grid. I never use these....
Once all is said and done, go back to the North End. Anyway, this part is getting too long so until next time, ain't nobody dope as me!
