And now...the game's only optional dungeon. Sadly, it's the only one. There should be more.

[edit] The Omega factor
Go back to your airship and go to the coordinate input thingy. Go to about (70,34) to find the Omega Ruins. Now, what are we waiting for! Let's go!
[edit] Enemies and intro
Now, this place is very, very difficult to describe and has some very, very difficult enemies in it. And if that's not all, there's only ONE SAVE POINT in the entire dungeon, and it's right at the beginning. So you may want to spend some time leveling up there before going deeper into the dungeon. It lets you get used to the monsters you'll be facing. Oh, and speaking of those monsters, you'll have to have Wakka and maybe Auron put on their monster-catching weapons because you need to catch 10 of everything here. And there are a lot of monsters (16 in total; 14 of these you can catch) here, so it'll take awhile.
Now, about those monsters. The first monster you'll face is one that appears every other battle. This is the Zaurus and it's the strongest lizard type enemy. It can Petrify or Silence you with its physical, which is all it ever uses. You can Steal lots of Petrify Grenades from it. The common Steal is 2 and the rare is 3. One hit from Wakka's Blitzball should catch it. When you beat it, it'll drop the usual weapons, but its armor might have Slow immunity!
The Zauri usually come with a chest which you can open by Stealing. Sometimes, that chest contains a Mega-Potion. Other times, it'll transform into a Mimic, which is an enemy with around 50K HP and lots of defense. Luckily they can only attack physically, and you don't need to catch them. However, you WANT TO MAKE SURE RIKKU IS IN THE PARTY THAT KILLS IT. It drops 50,000 Gil, which means that ups to 100,000 Gil if Rikku is in the party! This is your "get rich quick" scheme and by the time you're done catching monsters, you'll probably be a multi-millionaire. Which is good, because if you want to get items by Bribing, you'll need to be one.
The Floating Death enemies are the ultimate floating eyeballs. Their physical still inflicts Confuse, but they have a nasty Shock Wave attack that hits everyone. Definitely Steal from it, because it can supply you with any Musks you may need. The common Steal is 4 and the rare is 5! You'll need Wakka to snipe it down for you, and again, it has less than 10K HP, so he can kill it in one hit. It drops the usual weapons, but its armor drops might have Confuse immunity!
The Halmas are armadillo type enemies. They only attack with their physical which inflicts Slow on a party member. Definitely try to Steal from them, because their common Steal is 3 Hypello Potions. Their rare Steal is 2 Shadow Gems. You definitely won't be able to catch it in one hit. Have your first hit have Wakka use Armor Break, and then you can catch it with your second, provided the Armor Break hit does 3,001 HP of damage at the minimum. Its drops provide Berserk resistance, but not immunity. Its weapons are the usual ones.
The Black Element is a very, VERY dangerous enemy. It can cast Berserk on a party member, which is bad because of the enemy it shows up with, which I'm gonna tell you about next. If you see one, you should switch to your anti-status whore ultimate armor. It also casts Demi and Flare, the latter of which is very powerful. If you want to Steal from it, only have Rikku with her regular ultimate armor that has Master Thief on do it. Its rare Steal is 4 valuable Shining Gems, but its common Steal is a measly Hi-Potion. Use Armor Break on it with Wakka, and then capture it. Thankfully, it has almost no HP (only 7,600). Its weapon drops are various elemental weapons and its armor drops provide resistance and immunity to multiple elements.
The Spirit is a dangerous enemy that comes with the Black Element. It's even more dangerous. It almost always attacks with Poison Mist, which not only Poisons the entire party, but also Confuses everyone! Not fun. In fact, it will more than likely kill you if you don't have your status whore ultimate armor. It also uses White Wind to heal itself and its allies, and it casts random Level 2 spells, but those are nothing compared to Poison Mist. Don't bother Stealing from it. It just has Stamina Springs which you can get much easier in the Calm Lands. The common Steal is 1 and the rare Steal is 2. Its weapon drops will inflict the Sleep status, and its armor drops might provide Sleep immunity! They can also increase your Magic Defense a whole lot.
You'll find Puroboroses in groups of 3. This is a Bomb type enemy, so make sure you kill it in 3 hits before it blows up in your face. If you need Fire Gems, don't be afraid to Steal; Stealing doesn't make it blow up. The common Steal is 3 and the rare is 4. It also uses its physical and Firaga. Have Wakka catch them. Sometimes they drop armor with FIRE ABSORPTION! So be aware of that.
The Machea is a Klikk palette swap. Its attack can Poison you, and it also has a nasty Blades attack. Definitely try to Steal from it. It has 2 common Hi-Potions and a rare Stamina Tonic. It'll take two physicals from Wakka to capture, and when you do capture it, it drops weapons that randomly increase your strength and armor that randomly increases your defense.
The Master Coeurl attacks with random spells. Namely, it uses Level 3s (although not Firaga), Drain, Confuse, Silence, and Blaster. Blaster is an Instant Death move, so you might want to equip armor that has ID resistance or immunity. Definitely try to Steal from it. It has lots of Farplane Shadows, and the common Steal is 2 and the rare is 4. So stock up! Two hits should kill it, and Wakka should deliver the finishing blow so you can catch it. It drops weapons that inflict Instant Death or increases your Magic Power, and it drops armor with ID resistance or immunity, or it increases your Defense or Magic Defense.
The Demonolith can be a HUGE pain. It has high defense and it's a status whore. It can inflict Zombie and Curse with its physical, and has a very dangerous counterattack called Pharoh's Curse. This inflicts Silence, Blind, Poison, and Curse on a character. THANKFULLY it's only one character. But its worst attack is called Breath, and Petrifies the whole party. You can only Steal Petrify Grenades from them, so don't bother. You can get the same amount you got from the Zauri, which are much more common. Their Defense is also sky high, so you'll want to use Armor Break on them. When you see them get low on HP, have Wakka catch them. Their weapon drops let you inflict Petrification, and their armor drops provide Petrify resistance and immunity. They can also have No Encounters on them.
The rest of the enemies here are VERY elusive, and you can only fight one at a time, so they can be a bitch to capture. They're also hard to kill. The first one is the Wraith, which is a Ghost like enemy. It has high defense and Armor Break immunity, so it's tough to kill. It uses Level 3 spells, Death, and |Doom, which inflicts Condemned on you. It has a common Farplane Shadow and a rare Farplane Wind for you to Steal, and whether or not you want to is up to you (you already know how to get lots of these items). Anyway, make sure you catch 10 of them. When they die, they drop weapons that increase your Magic Power and armor that increases your MP or has No Encounters on them.
The next enemy is the Adamantoise, which is big and has lots of HP and defense. It has a powerful physical, an Earthquake attack, and a Breath attack that hits everyone. Definitely try to Steal from it. You can Steal a common Healing Water, which is a new item. Here's what it does:
It also has a rare Stamina Tablet. Anyway, start out with Armor Break, then attack it until it gets low on HP, in which case Wakka should capture it. It drops weapons that cut the casting costs of your spells in half, and it drops armor that can cast Protect or Shell when your HP gets low, or armor that increases your max HP.
The Varuna is an interesting enemy. I like its graphic. It's one of my all time favorites. But it has a lot of variety to its attacks. It uses Level 3s, the Demonolith's Pharoh's Curse, Demi, Death, Dispel (which hits ALL party members), Silence, and it can cast Haste on itself. It also has a very nasty attack called Emblem of Fate, which hits everyone. It has a lot of HP, so it's tough to bring down. Its common Steal is a Farplane Wind and its rare Steal is a Shining Gem. Have Rikku Steal from it primarily so you only get Shining Gems, which are very important to have. When you whittle down its HP, have Wakka catch it. It has a lot of HP (56,000), so it'll take awhile, especially since it loves to Haste itself. Dispel and Quick Hit should help, but be careful not to kill it without capturing it. It drops weapons with the Double Overdrive ability, which is useless since all your ultimate weapons have Triple Overdrive. Its armor drops have SOS Shell or increase your MP by 10%.
Now for the two toughest enemies here. First is the Great Malboro. It ALWAYS gets to go first unless you have a character with a weapon with First Strike. This is why I suggested that Auron should use his ultimate weapon and you should stick to Wakka for capturing monsters. The Great Malboro ALWAYS opens with Bad Breath, and if you're not wearing you status whore armors, you can kiss yourself goodbye. Everyone will be Confused or Berserked, and Blinded and Poisoned, which is death to everyone, unless you're VERY lucky. If you want to prepare properly, you'll have Auron in the front row to begin every battle, and not Yuna. If Auron is equipped with his ultimate weapon, switch him out for Yuna and have Yuna summon something to take the Bad Breath. Then dismiss the Aeon and fight it normally, summoning Aeons when it gets to be his turn. It then attacks like a traditional Malboro's attack pattern: it uses a physical and then uses a digestive attack, and then it switches back to Bad Breath. It also has a lot of HP (64,000) and takes awhile to kill. Nevertheless, you have to catch 10 of them. Don't bother Stealing. They drop armor that protects against various statuses, but no immunity, sadly.
The other tough enemy is the Master Tonberry. As you'd expect, it counters everything with Karma, which is unblockable and ignores defense, and is based off your kill count. It can also attack with Voodoo, which deals 10,000 HP damage always. It has 48,000 HP, so you'll have to make a few hits with some of the characters who haven't been killing much, such as Yuna or Rikku. Once it gets under 10,000 HP, have Wakka catch it. It drops ID related stuff. Although you can Steal rare Tetra Elementals from them, you should only do this if Rikku hasn't killed a lot of things, because otherwise you'll get hit with Karma and die.
You'll also find the occasional Defender Z here, but you know about that already.
You may notice that while you're here you'll run out of Power Spheres and Speed Spheres because most of the enemies drop Mana Spheres. If this happens, don't worry. Just go somewhere else and get your Spheres back.
[edit] Getting through this damn place
Now, there's a treasure chest game you can play here, but we're not going to do that right now. First, we need to get through this damn place. The map reveals itself as you explore it, so this place is difficult to describe. Take the west path, and don't go into any alcoves just yet. When you come to the "T," make a right. Then, make the first right you see and go down the path to find a chest with a Teleport Sphere. Now, go back to the main path and continue straight. If you come to a room with 4 chests, look around for the Al Bhed Primer XXVI, which translates the letter Z for you. Congratulations, you're now a master of the Al Bhedian language! Or, more precisely, you're a "sycdan." Anyway, from here, go to the right and take the elevator up. It's time to fight a boss!
This is the Ultima Weapon. It doesn't have that strong attacks. If you took the time to capture 10 of every monster here, you should be strong enough for this guy to be a pushover. It uses Holy, Sleep, Silence, Break, and Confuse, which at this point you should be able to manage one at a time. It also has some tough special attacks. Core Energy hits one character and Shimmering Rain hits everyone. You DEFINITELY NEED TO STEAL FROM THIS THING. The common Steal is 10 Doors to Tomorrow and the rare Steal is 20! For this reason, only Rikku with her ultimate armor should Steal. These things are awesome because 10 of them will add Overdrive -> AP to a weapon. If this is on your weapon, your Overdrive gauge won't increase, but you'll get extra AP after battle. Since you already have all your ultimate weapons, you won't be using this much unless you REALLY want to level up fast, and it's kinda unnecessary. It only has 70,000 HP, but we're not gonna kill it. Instead, we're gonna Bribe it! If you have 1,400,000 Gil, pay up and get ready to receive 99 Pendulums! If you didn't get the Pendulums from the Chocobo Race, this is your chance! Besides, you're only missing out on Level 3 Key Spheres, which are replenishable from the Defender Zs. So be happy with what you got!
Anyway, step onto the warp panel and you'll be warped to the top of some towers. Now, basically, there are no random encounters here, but the top of each tower has a scripted battle for you to fight. To start, go to the left and walk across the platforms until you reach a dead end with a Friend Sphere. Now, go the other way. Fight the scripted battles and eventually you'll make it to the final platform. It's time to fight Ultima's true form: the Omega Weapon!
This guy has 99,999 HP and more powerful versions of Ultima's attacks, however, he trades in Holy for Nova, Sleep for Demi, and Silence for Ultima, which means it's very dangerous. First things first: bring in Kimahri and have him use Lancet so he can learn Nova, and this is the ONLY TIME HE CAN, so make use of it! Next, bring in your Thieves and Steal successfully four times. Its common AND rare steal is 30 Gambler's Spirits! If you Steal 4 times successfully, you'll have 99 of these! Now, these things don't have any practical use, because their only use is 20 of them put SOS Overdrive onto a weapon, and since you already have Triple Overdrive on your weapons it doesn't mean a thing, but it's good for novelty, and if you Mix them with something you'll ALWAYS get even BETTER things than you ever got in the past! Anyway, beyond that, just summon Anima once and use Oblivion for the instant win. Doing it this way will net you 6 Level 4 Key Spheres. Its weapon drops have Triple Overdrive and its armor drops have Break HP Limit! Anyway, after this fight, you'll automatically warp back to the Save Point.
[edit] The random chest game
Now, I've never done this, but there are 12 chests scattered about the Omega Ruins (the cave area, not the tower top area) in bunches. There's a group of 2, two groups of 3, and a group of 4 chests. Now, if you want to do this I strongly suggest equipping an armor with No Encounters on it which will make trekking around the area a lot easier. Basically the situation is this. When you open a chest, there's a chance you'll get an item and a chance you'll have to fight a Monster-in-a-box. Now, there are a lot of theories as to how to get items in all 12 chests. One of them is based on timing, one of them is that it's completely random. If you have a tried-and-true method of getting this to work, add this to the walkthrough and give yourself credit. I WILL, however, tell you what the prizes are:
- 1st chest: 1 Level 4 Key Sphere
- 2nd chest: 1 Defending Bracer for Auron. This has Blind and Silence immunity, and no empty slots.
- 3rd chest: 1 Turnover for Wakka. This has Magic Counter and Counterattack on it. Useless.
- 4th chest: 2 Level 3 Key Spheres
- 5th chest: 1 Defending Armlet for Kimahri. This has Poison and Petrify immunity, with 2 empty slots.
- 6th chest: 2 Friend Spheres
- 7th chest: 1 Level 4 Key Sphere
- 8th chest: 1 Phantom Ring for Yuna. This has fire, ice, and lightning absorption, with 1 empty slot.
- 9th chest: 1 Cactuar Wizard for Lulu. This halves the casting cost of all spells. Useless.
- 10th chest: 1 Warmonger for Rikku. This has Double AP and Double Overdrive. Useless, since her ultimate weapon has Double AP and Triple Overdrive.
- 11th chest: 2 Teleport Spheres
- 12th chest: 99 Warp Spheres (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
The Warp Sphere is like a Teleport Sphere only it will let you go ANYWHERE on the Sphere Grid! Even to places you haven't accessed yet!
Anyway, that's all there is to do here, although this is a great place to level up.
