Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this ruined hall
Aboard this salvage ship.
The mate was a piddling Al Bhed girl,
The skipper brave and sure.
And a foreign born they found went on
A machina tour, a machina tour.
But one crazy night they were attacked
By a crazy beast named Sin
With the power he had over waves
There was no way they could win
So the foreign born was cast away
And washed for quite a while
But here we find that he wound up
Here on Besaid Iiiiiiisle!
(God, I fucking suck at this).

[edit] Yeah, that's what this little desert island is called.
So Tidus will wake up and discover he's got a Blitzball next to him! He gets excited and shows off his moves to some natives on the beach. It turns out that these natives are actually a Blitzball club known as the Besaid Aurochs. The captain introduces himself as Wakka and says he's also the coach. He then introduces his teammates: The middie Letty, the forward Datto, the defensemen Jassu and Botta, and the goalie Keepa (again, I wonder why people think Woolsey sucks). You'll notice they all speak in very poor Jamaican accents, and that they never say "mon." I mean, come on, mon. Dis is an islan', mon. 'Chu run on island time, mon! 'Chu gotta soun' like an islan' brod'a, mon! Anyway, Wakka will be impressed and start worshipping Tidus and his Blitzball skills. Tidus will tell him he plays for the Zanarkand Abes, and Wakka will ask him if he hit his head or something (or was it Rikku who said that? I always get those two mixed up. But that's embarassing considering one of those characters kicks ass and one is mediocre unless you're someone who respects characters like Gau and Relm (which I actually do, so Rikku does get respect from me for that reason)). So Wakka will explain everything to Tidus. Or some of it. He'll tell Tidus that the world they're in is called Spira, and that people used to have a very technologically advanced society and became lazy. Sin then came and destroyed the society. The legend is that this is because people were so lazy. But 1000 years have passed since then and people now live in fear.
So Wakka will take you back to his village for dinner, and he'll join your party. But before leaving the area go back into the water. Go into an alcove in the corner for a chest with a Moon Crest. Save these Crests, they may appear useless, but they'll come in handy later. There's also a chest in the water with two Antidotes (yeah, there are chests that have more than one item in this. Don't blame me, blame Square). Now, go talk to all the Blitzball players. You'll get cool stuff from them. I don't remember what all of it is off the top of my head, and the GameFAQs people aren't as thorough as Djibriel is with FFVI, but it's mostly recovery items. Apparently these items are 200 Gil, 2 Potions, 3 more Potions and a Hi-Potion.
So follow Wakka into the jungle, but be sure to save your game first! He'll eventually push you into a river. Or is it a lake? We'll never know. But for now just fight there. You'll be facing Piranhas again, this time in groups of up to four of them. They're still cheese to kill, even in freshwater. There are chests in the water (you'll have to dive to reach them) which have a Phoenix Down and a Hi-Potion. But just follow the linear path. Eventually, Wakka will corner and torture Tidus, and make him be on his Blitzball team. Tidus has no choice but to agree or else he'll choke to death (although Tidus choking to death makes me happy in the pants).
You'll come out on a plateau near a large statue. There's a cutscene here where Wakka tells you his team can't win a game. Which means the Aurochs were on the cover of Sports Illustrated before the season opener every year. You'll also meet Luzzu and Gatta, two Crusaders. But what are they crusading against? What's the reason for jihad in Spira? But follow Wakka down to the village. Here, he'll teach you a prayer of sorts, but Tidus already knows it.
[edit] Stone? We have plenty stone! Here, there, at village, you take!
Alright. Sorry for the bad Chrono Trigger reference, but there is some treasure here. One of the beauties of this is that very few paths in this game are hidden (although items can be hard to find sometimes). There's a hidden area with three chests. Inside are two Potions, a Hi-Potion, and 400 Gil. Save your Gil. You won't be spending too much money on weapons in this game, but there is a good purpose for having millions (maybe billions?) of Gil near the end of the game. Go to the "Inn" here. Of course in this game you have no use for Inns since save points automatically restore your HP and MP. That's too bad. I liked the Inns. You'll see Luzzu and Gatta here, and they'll explain what the whole crusade is about. It's about keeping Sin away from heavilly populated areas. Must be a tough job. But at least you look cool. There's an Al Bhed Primer II on the floor somewhere here, so look for it.
When you're ready, go to the large structure in the back of Besaid. This is a large temple. Inside, Tidus will whine that he's come under Sin's "toxin." Apparently being close to Sin causes amnesia, which is the perfect excuse for the know-nothing Tidus to learn about the mysteries of Spira. He'll learn that the entire world of Spira is a theocracy run by the Church of Yevonism. This religion worships a mysterious god named "Yevon." You'll learn that the purpose of Yevonism is to train Summoners who travel the entire world and visit all the temples and eventually make their way to the ruins of the ancient city of Zanarkand, where they learn how to defeat Sin.
After this, head back to Wakka's house, and he'll tell you to take a nap. When you wake up, he'll be gone. Go back into the temple. Wakka and the priest there will be talking about stuff like "Guardians," and apparently Wakka is one. But what is he supposed to protect? The world from Sin? I certainly hope so. That thing's a beast. You'll learn that a Summoner is stuck in the temple trying to complete a test. We never know what that test is, but since it involves Summoners, Final Fantasy tradition states that there is a Law of Summoning: Test a Caller before you answer the Summons. Presumably the Summoner is doing battle with a Summoned Monster. That's just my hunch, but it probably is Tidus's, too, as he storms past the priest and into the forbidden area of the temple.
Welcome to the Cloister of Trials! You now have to complete a puzzle of sorts to get to the place where the Summoner is. Touch the thing on the north wall (it's a "Glyph.") This will make the wall on the right react. Another Glyph appeared there. Touch it to make the wall mysteriously collapse. Now, follow the passageway until you find a little hole in the wall with a ball stuck inside. This is a Glyph Sphere and can be used to open doors. Grab it and put it in the hole in the door that's blocking your way. The door will open. Go through the door and take the Glyph Sphere out again. Put it in the nearby niche and it'll make the wall move up to reveal a passageway to a "Destruction Sphere." Remember this location for later. Head to the wall with the strange symbols on them and touch them to reveal a weird room with a "Besaid Sphere" inside. Grab it and put it on the pedistal behind you. This will open up a new passageway, but don't go down it yet! Now go back to the Destruction Sphere room and grab it. Put it in the hole where you found the Besaid Sphere. This will make a wall crumble at the far end of the corridor. Go there and open the chest you find to get a Rod of Wisdom. This is useless right now, but it'll get its use later. Now, go back to the pedistal and push it forward until it sinks.
Wakka will catch up to you here and he'll be pissed that you're down here. Luckily he's forgiving. But two other people aren't...
[edit] The Summoner with no horn
Here, you'll find a Goth chick and a humanoid lion with a stub on his head. They'll be pissed at Wakka for letting Tidus come down, but Tidus will say he didn't know, and they'll give Tidus a mean staredown. But then the door will open, and a woman who doesn't look like she should be down there comes out and trips and falls. She says she's finally become a Summoner.
You'll head out to the village square and she'll demonstrate her new Summoning powers. She'll Summon a monster, or Aeon in this game, from the sky. It's a giant bird that kind of reminds me of a hybrid between Palidor and Tritoch. Its name? Valefor! What a weird name. Anyway, apparently this thing is female. So is the Summoner. Her name is Yuna. Somehow I was thinking Square was thinking of a town called Niskayuna in New York (a suburb of Schenectady) when they were thinking of names. But anyway, the village will be worshipping her, and Wakka will warn Tidus not to ever hook up with her, EVER. I guess that means they're going to hook up at some point in the story.
Gamble around the campfire, children! It's Senor Cardgage for sending off the Calmoner on that journey I talked about earlier. But yeah, there'll be a huge party, and the entire town will be pissed at Tidus because he entered the forbidden part of the temple, and will try to protect Yuna from him. But Tidus somehow manages to get the strength to push them aside (go figure. He's a wimpy almost female and he's beating up old ladies and kids). But he talks to Yuna. Wakka then tells his team that Tidus is travelling with them to Luca so they can play some Blitzball. They'll be taking the same boat as Yuna.
That night, Tidus will have a dream. We meet his father Jecht, who was apparently a star Blitzball player back in Zanarkand, and was so self absorbed and an alcoholic and horrible father. Tidus will try to fight back, but Yuna and Rikku somehow appear and start cheering him on. He's later awakened by Wakka's voice, and Tidus overhears Wakka talking to that goth chick from the temple. Her name is Lulu and she was Wakka's brother's ex. His brother's name is Chappu, and apparently he died in some sort of freak accident. We learn that Wakka brought Tidus to Besaid because he reminded him of Chappu, but that pisses off Lulu even more.
This is a long pilgrimage, Yuna! Take ONLY WHAT YOU NEED TO SURVIVE. Yuna comes out of the temple carrying Her Royal Highnesses' Matched Luggage. Inside is Yuna's ultra-deluxe leg waxer and tanner. And she can't live without it! But Lulu makes her take everything down. Meanwhile, you and Wakka will leave town. He'll give Tidus the sword he gave Chappu: the Brotherhood. Equip this on Tidus so he can get a small Strength boost (it has "Strength +5%" on it). But go back into the town and go to the house closest to the temple. There's a dog there. He'll give you something that teaches Valefor the Energy Blast, his second Overdrive (Aeons have Overdrives, too). NOW leave town.
[edit] Mondo tutorials, mon
The first few battles outside the town are forced, and they are tutorials. The first fight will be against a Dingo, and Tidus will be asked to kill it with his physical. A Condor will immediately show up afterwards. Wakka will tell you that he has the best chance of hitting flying opponents (he has the highest base Accuracy stat. Later in the game this'll be a moot point, but for now Wakka's the only one who can kill flying opponents effectively with physicals).
The second battle faces Tidus and Wakka against a Water Flan. Have Tidus use his physical and find out... it deals next to nothing in damage??? How the hell are we going to beat this thing up? Luckilly, Lulu joins the party at this point. She's your Black Mage here, and she'll be able to use the three basic Level 1 spells, and the Water spell. In this game, elements work a little differently. Instead of the eight usual elements, there are only five (Fire, Ice, Lightining, Water, and Holy (Holy isn't listed as an actual element, but its effects are elemental in nature)), and Water spells are treated like the classic Fire, Ice, and Lightning spells (ie there are three levels of Water spells). As always, water-elemental monsters are weak against Lightning, so have Lulu cast the Thunder spell to take care of this thing. You should also note that you can't target all opponents with a single spell anymore, so no crowd control for you! Lulu will become a permanent party member after this fight.
When you reach that statue, the Aurochs will pray to it for victory. Might as well hope that they can throw a Hail Mary at the end of the game. But continue on down the path anyway. In the next area, you'll see several save points you can't reach as much as you might want to try. There's also a rune-type thing here which has more gibberish letters. But you'll see some of the letters become pink. Maybe those are ancient Al Bhed ruins? But more importantly, that lion thing from the temple will attack you. His name is Kimahri, and Tidus will have to fight him solo because he trusts everyone else. Kimahri is cheese to kill. Just use physicals.
In the next area, you'll face a Garuda. This is a tutorial battle. Here, you'll learn how to switch party members in battle. Yuna will then be in the party. You'll learn how to Summon with her. To start, you'll be able to summon Valefor. In this game, Summons work a bit differently. Instead of wasting some MP for a powerful attack, the Summon will basically take the place of all the party members and will have to face the enemies alone. You can control what the Summons do, and they can attack and use the same spells everyone else can use. Valefor knows all the Level 1 Black Magic spells. They also have Overdrives of their own and a special skill. Just kill the Garuda with Valefor.
The next fight will be against another Garuda, and you'll be forced to have Wakka use his "Dark Attack" ability to Blind it. Fight this battle normally. You can now switch between Tidus, Wakka, Lulu, and Yuna freely. The rest of the battles here will be random, so you can level up here if you like. There will be no Garudas in the random encounters; just Dingos, Condors, and Water Flans. Tidus should go for the Dingos, Wakka the Condors, and Lulu the Water Flans. Yuna should always be subbed into the battle and defend so she can get some experience too (she's your White Mage in addition to being your Summoner, so use her to heal. The good news is you start out with the Esuna, a spell you normally don't get until mid-game, and the obligatory Cure). Also, try to win some armor from the Dingos. Specifically, you want a Bright Shield and a Bright Armguard. These grant some protection against Blind. Give them to Wakka and Tidus, you'll need them in an upcoming boss fight.
Head down to the beach for a sendoff party. Before getting on the ship, talk to the townsfolk for some items. When you're ready, save your game and get on the ship. Make sure you're ready, though, as a tough boss is coming up.
