Okay, so now that you're all saved up and your Aeon's Overdrives are full again, we can descend into the basement here.
[edit] Our Final Destination
Before moving on, replace your equipment that has Berserk protection to Zombie or Instant Death protection or immunity. Remember those 60 Farplane Winds we got back then? Customize them onto Yuna's armor with Zombie immunity so now she's immune to both Zombie AND Instant Death! This is very important to have in the upcoming fight. As for the other characters, Instant Death protection takes precedence over Zombie protection or even Zombie immunity. If you have any open spaces in your armors, give yourself Blind, Silence, or Sleep protection as well. Also, make sure you have lots of Holy Waters and Phoenix Downs handy. Down there, you'll see a very weak Fayth. This was Zaon, and he was the first Final Aeon. A man will tell you that Yunalesca, his wife, will show you how to get your own Final Aeon.
In the next room, everyone tells Yuna they have faith in her. Yunalesca will then show up. She'll start talking about how one of our heroes has to be sacrificed so they can become the Fayth for the Final Summoning. It has to be someone Yuna really, really loves. I say sacrifice everyone but Auron and Wakka, but if I have to choose one I'd pick our Assclown. Yunalesca then talks about death as if it's a good thing, a liberation. So calm, so insensitive to things like death. Sounds like someone else I know...
Anyway, you now get another Auron/Braska/Jecht flashback. Auron is still hesitant, and Jecht agrees to become the Fayth for Braska's Final Aeon, saying that he doesn't have anything to live for because he can't see Tidus and Mrs. Tidus again. Auron reminds Braska that Sin always comes back, but Braska says he doesn't care. He thinks it won't this time. Jecht thinks he can break the cycle...but he can't.
Back in real life, Lulu says she volunteers to become the Fayth. Tidus tries to convince Yuna not to do it and to think up some other way. Tidus then demands that he wants everything, just like a little baby. He says it's his story and it'll go his way all the time. Yuna reminds him that it's her story, too, and that it's everyone's story. Tidus says he's gonna go ask Yunalesca some questions first.
Go to the next room. Tidus will ask Yunalesca if Sin will come back if they beat it. Yunalesca says that there's nothing they can do to ever stop Sin, and that every Final Aeon that defeats Sin becomes the next Sin (which is how Jecht became Sin). Wakka chimes in that Sin will go away if everyone atones for their crimes, but Yunalesca denies that there will ever be enough purity to cleanse the world of Sin. Lulu says that that directly contradicts Yevon's teachings (which we pretty much abandoned back about 10 parts ago anyway), and that it's been Spira's hope. Yunalesca than says that it's always good to have hope because it helps you forget the horrible situation you're in and lets you accept fate.
Time for another flashback! Auron runs in and attacks Yunalesca because Braska and Jecht both died in vain, because Sin came back. Yunalesca says they had hope, so they did it.
Back in reality, Yuna makes up her mind to not have anyone become her Fayth because the Final Summoning is a huge hoax. She says that she would've been happy to die if there was real hope and if she could fight Spira's sorrow, but Yunalesca says it's worthless for her to even think that. Because of this, Yunalesca decides the only thing she can do is kill Yuna. Auron delivers one of my favorite lines in the game:
- "Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and fight your sorrow! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!"
- — Auron
Everyone decides to fight Yunalesca, so it's boss time!
Yunalesca has 24,000 HP of terror. Now, she counters all physicals with Blind, all Magic with Silence, and everything else with Sleep. If you think you're not gonna get hit with Sleep, you can be bold and attempt to Steal a common Stamina Tablet and a rare Farplane Wind. In this difficult fight, though, it's just not worth it. Her physical is also something to watch out for. It doesn't do much damage, but it Dispels all your positive buffs. Yunalesca can also use an Absorb ability, which takes away 50% of one of your character's HP and adds it to Yunalesca's (so it's like a "Drain 2" of sorts). Also, DO NOT SUMMON. Yunalesca will counter any Aeon attack with Drain and Osmose until the Aeon dies. Don't even summon when she gets low on HP. There's a reason for this, and it's coming up right.....NOW!
When Yunalesca dies, she transforms into a giant...something. This form has 48,000 HP, and it has some nasty attacks. Yunalesca can't counter with Sleep, Blind, or Silence anymore. Instead, she counters with her buff-removing physical. She'll begin using Hell Biter in this form, which is a VERY nasty attack which inflicts Zombie on the whole party and damages it. She'll then follow up by casting Curaga and Regen on Zombified characters, which will usually kill them. From this point on, Yuna should be on the front lines for the rest of the fight, because I told you to give her Zombie and Instant Death immunity. She needs to focus on healing the other characters. Also, when you don't need to heal, Yunalesca is weak to Holy, so have Yuna cast Holy. When you get low on HP, make sure that if you have a character without Instant Death protection, that he or she is a Zombie! Don't summon here, either, because...
When Yunalesca dies again, she'll transform into an enormous Medusa head that's even bigger than the last one! This form has 60,000 HP, and always opens with an attack called Mega Death, which inflicts Instant Death to EVERYONE, and is unblockable except if you have ID protection or the character is a Zombie. This is why I had you keep Yuna out because I told you to give her ID immunity! Yunalesca still uses both Hell Biter AND Mega Death regularly in this form. She still uses Absorb as well, and has another dangerous attack called Mind Blast. If you remember Atma Weapon's attack, you'll know this is a status whoring attack. This time it can inflict Confuse, Sleep, and Curse, and PRAY that Yuna doesn't get Confused. Now, you'll have to keep a balance of Zombied and unzombied characters at all times because you want to be able to survive the healing spells AND Mega Death, which is hard unless you listened to me and kept Yuna with Zombie and ID immunity up front (THIS IS LIKE THE NINTH TIME I TOLD YOU THIS!) When Yunalesca gets low on HP, to the point where a Bahamut Overdrive can kill her in one hit, summon Bahamut and away with Yunalesca! She'll drop some Level 3 Key Spheres, and her weapon drops inflict Zombie and her armor drops provide Zombie immunity.
After this fight, Yunalesca will respond to Tidus's proclamation that the'll find another way by mentioning Yu Yevon the immortal who will create another Sin if Sin gets destroyed. Who is this Yu Yevon? We'll find out soon enough.
When you regain control of Tidus, look around the area for a chest with the Sun Crest inside. This is the last ingredient we need for Tidus' ultimate weapon! Hooray!
On the way out, Auron will admit that he, too is undead and unsent. He says that he couldn't bear to see Braska and Jecht die, so he went to Yunalesca to avenge them, but she killed him. When he got down to the bottom of Mt. Gagazet, he met Kimahri and told him to take Yuna to Besaid. After he died, he fulfilled his promise to Jecht and went to Zanarkand to help raise Tidus.
After this, you'll basically be warped outside Zanarkand. Sin will be there, looking tranquil and looking at you. And so is the airship!
[edit] A New Hope
Hey, it's Baked Jake again! Everyone is running around trying to think of a new idea. When you regain control of Tidus, go up to the upper deck to find Yuna and Kimahri talking and trying to get an idea. They don't know anything outside Yevon's teachings (because they've been brainwashed all their damn lives. There's only one person here who hasn't been brainwashed, and she's too stupid to think of anything period). Kimahri suggests going to see the Mastah Maestah Yo Mika, rapper extraordinairre for answers. But Wakka, Lulu, and Rikku have other ideas. They think that because Sin is Jecht, they can calm him using the Hymn of the Fayth.
You now control the airship. Since there's no World Map, you have to talk to Baked Jake if you wanna go somewhere and then select from a list. Lame Square. Why did you get rid of the greatness that was the World Map? Anyway, first, go to the Highbridge. You'll meet some Warrior Monks there who will point their illegal Machina at you and call you "infidels." Damn, is Yevon in a Jihad now? Rikku says something smart for a change: the best thing to do is fight. But the fundie bitch Shelinda, who's been missing for like ever, comes in and she says that she was made the leader of the Warrior Monks, and that Yuna isn't a traitor and that the Al Bhed spread that rumor (another Yevonist cover up). The party demands to see Mika, so she'll take them to him.
Mika is pissed when he finds out you beat Yunalesca, and he starts crying because he doesn't want to think. He mentions Yu Yevon again, and Tidus asks him about the guy. Mika says that Yu Yevon takes Pyreflies and turns them into an armor, which becomes Sin, and that the Final Aeon was the only thing that could beat Sin. He starts crying and then fades away. Looks like all the maesters are either dead or redead!
It's the purple dude again! He makes Tidus and Yuna (the only people who can see or hear him) come to his room. He asks Tidus if he found a way to beat Sin yet. Tidus thinks it's a combination of the Hymn of the Fayth and beating up Yu Yevon. The purple kid then talks about Yu Yevon, who was once a Summoner from Old Zanarkand who basically exists only to Summon now, and that he lives inside Sin. He then asks Yuna to Summon all her Aeons inside Sin and let them help. Yuna agrees to do this.
On the way out, Rikku asks Shelinda to help spread the word about the Hymn of the Fayth plan, and how everyone needs to sing along with the ship. Shelinda doesn't understand it, but she agrees.
[edit] Sidequest time!
Okay. The next I-don't-know-how-many parts of the Walkthrough will deal entirely with optional stuff. Why? Because there's now quite a bit you can do. Like get everyones ultimate weapons, catch monsters, get rare stuff, and a ton of other stuff you can do. So, the next few parts will focus on that. And that's all for today. Join us again next time when our guests will be Richie Sambora and that guy from The West Wing!
