So, there's one obstacle separating you from Zanarkand. That's Mt. Gagazet, home of the Ronsoes!

[edit] Kimahri's test
When you reach Gagazet, you'll find Kelk, who left Yevon. He'll order you to turn back, because he won't let traitors to Yevon climb it. Yuna essentially tells Yevon to fuck off, and Kelk gets pissed. Biran and Yenke then appear and offer to help Kelk kill any traitor to Yevon. Lulu and Auron, the brains of the party, remind Kelk that he turned his back on the teachings, too. Kelk admits it, and lets Yuna go because she is determined. Kelk calls her "Strong," however she's really a weakling. Want a strong summoner? Try Rydia. Now Rydia would just walk past without getting the support, because she doesn't NEED any Guardians, let alone six of them.
Save your game, MAKE SURE KIMAHRI IS PROPERLY EQUIPPED, and start your climb up the mountain. Biran and Yenke, however, won't let Kimahri pass. Kimahri is a weakling, according to them (well, they DID break his horn), and that he is a shame to the rest of the Ronsoes. But this time Kimahri will stand his ground. Time to fight!
Biran and Yenke have you in a Pincer Attack here, and they'll often switch sides. Now, their stats are based on Kimahri's, so if you haven't been using him much, it's okay. Although we use him to Steal in this walkthrough, and this fight is no exception. It's especially important that you do Steal because both Biran and Yenke have Level 3 Key Spheres! And if you're lucky, you'll get TWO AT ONCE! Focus on one of the Ronso brothers, so that you can Steal from the other later in the fight. Start off by Stealing at least 3 times from one of the brothers.
Now, the Brothers Ronso have you in a Pincer Attack, and they can use Buldoze to switch sides of the battle and deal a lot of damage to Kimahri. They attack with various Ronso Rages. Yenke uses Fire Breath, White Wind, and Aqua Breath, while Biran uses Mighty Guard. He also uses Blizzard and Thunder. Luckily if you don't know these Ronso Rages yet, use Lancet and you can get them. If Biran and Yenke are on the same side, DO NOT USE PHYSICAL ATTACKS. Doing this will severely reduce the damage you give them. Use Lancet and Ronso Rages when your Overdrive gauge gets full. Use Al Bhed Potions to heal. Kill Biran first because he can heal Yenke when he gets low on HP. When Biran dies, Yenke will cast Haste on himself, making him tougher to kill. But he's still easier than the two at once. Steal from Yenke and then take him down. Use Al Bhed Potions when you need to heal. The Brothers Ronso will drop common Return Spheres and rare Friend Spheres. Their armor drops increase your MP by a whopping 20%!
After the fight, Biran and Yenke will not only let you pass, but they'll kill any Yevonist who follows you up the mountain. Yenke promises to make Yuna a statue with a proper Summoner's Horn. This is another reason why I hate the Summoners in this game: they have no horns. The Ronsoes should be the Summoners because they have the Summoners' Horns.
[edit] I still don't get how these characters don't freeze up in their summer clothes...
If there was one thing realistic about Final Fantasy VII, it's that the game was actually smart enough to tell you that Cloud could freeze up in weather like this. This game won't even do that. This sucks. And to think I'm actually praising FFVII. Usually I praise the game that came before it.
Hopefully, now you have someone who finished up their section of the Sphere Grid. Your new Level 3 Key Spheres will get your characters into other parts. Wakka and Tidus should be your first priority, so that Wakka can increase his physical strength (he needs it to capture foes and get Armor Break, since his section dumps into Auron's which dumps into Tidus's, meaning Wakka will be your most powerful physical attacker for awhile), and Yuna's section comes after Tidus's, which lets him become a backup White Mage and eventually he'll get around to Steal, which will give you a fourth Thief!
Anyway, there are four new enemies here you have to catch 10 of.
The first is a classic Final Fantasy enemy: the Bandersnatch. If the Skoll didn't satisfy your need for Dream Powder, then the Bandersnatch will! It has 2 for a common Steal and 3 for a rare Steal. Use Wakka physicals to catch it. Watch out for it putting you to Sleep and Silencing you, which is what most dogs do anyway. It drops the usual dog stuff (armor that protects against Silence and Sleep, the usual weapons).
Next is the Grat, which can be dangerous because it's attack is very powerful and it can Confuse you. You can Steal a LOT of Antidotes from it (4 is the common Steal!). And its rare Steal is 3 Remedies! It's VERY weak to Fire, so have Lulu weaken it and then have your poachers (Wakka and Auron) capture it. Its weapons randomly inflict Poison or increase your stats, and its armor randomly protects against Poison or increases your stats.
The Grenade is out of place here, since it's fire elemental and this is a snowy place. You can Steal lots of Fire Gems from it (the common Steal is 2 and the rare Steal is 3). Despite the fact that it's flying, Auron can still deal damage to it, so use him and Wakka to catch ten of these before switching back to your normal methods of killing them. They drop fire elemental weapons and armor that can provide either fire resistance or immunity.
The Bashura is the last catchable enemy you haven't seen yet. You should try to Steal lots of Soul Springs from this guy. There's 1 for a common Steal and 2 for a rare Steal. This is a new item, so here's what it does:
So, this guy attacks just like the Ogre, and can also self-increase his stats. Don't attack when he puts his dukes up unless you want to risk a deadly counterattack. He has low defenses, so use Wakka and Auron to catch 10 of them. Beyond that, they're weak to fire. They drop weapons that can counterattack physicals and increase stats while their armor can cast Haste on characters in near fatal.
There are two mechanical enemies here: the Mech Leader and the Mech Defender. You can Steal Grenades from the former and Al Bhed Potions from the latter. Stealing from both will kill them, and you can't capture them, so don't worry about it. They both drop the usual mechanical stuff.
You'll also find some enemies from the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth here, including Imps and Nidhoggs. Doesn't it seem odd to you that there are no ice based enemies here?
So anyway, now for the items here. You'll see a little sliver out to the southeast of where you enter. There's a chest here with 20,000 Gil. The funny looking dead end on the west side of the path has a chest with 2 Mega-Potions. The next thing you'll come to is a Summoner's Grave. Lulu will mention that a lot of Summoners and Guardians die up here. Although I don't think it's from the monsters as much as it is from the bitchin' cold weather that they're not dressed for. Morons. The path is still linear, so keep following it. When you reach the fork in the road go up the small path to the north to find a Braska's Sphere. This is basically a speech from Braska to Yuna basically ensuring his support, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, when this is done, Auron will learn the Banishing Blade Overdrive, which can be useful, but I don't recommend this because it's kinda cheating.
From here, continue down the linear path. You'll come to another grave and Lulu says a lot of the monsters here were once summoners, and that they want Yuna to die with them. Of course, the idealistic and simplistic Tidus says Yuna'll be fine. Heh. Yeah, right. Anyway, at the next fork, go left up the spirally dead end passage for a chest with a Defending Bracer for Auron. This kickass armor provides IMMUNITY to both Poison AND Petrification! You should definitely save this! The next thing you'll come to on the very linear path is a merchant named Wantz. This guy is your replacement to O'aka XXIII who is in prison for helping Yuna. This guy actually sells some stuff you need. He sells armor for Yuna and Auron with Zombie immunity, which you DESPERATELY NEED for an upcoming boss fight. So buy those and continue on. After crossing the next ice bridge, you'll see a faint spiral. Go down into it to find two chests. These have an HP Sphere and a Level 4 Key Sphere for you. Then, keep following the path until you come to another grave, where Lulu will make an unnecessary comment. Keep moving on, and you'll come to...
A SAVE POINT! Finally! Save your game, equip any armor you have that provides Zombie immunity, get your Aeon and character Overdrives up, and go to the next area.
[edit] Hey! I wanna Seymour Flux!
When you reach this area, Rikku will pull Tidus aside to see how he's coming on a plan to save Yuna. Both of them come up short. As they go to catch up with the party, Seymour appears. Seymour will call Tidus the "son of Jecht." Why the hell can't anyone just refer to Tidus by name? See, this is the problem of games that have voice acting in them. And "Son of Jecht" sounds lame. Tidus asks Rikku to go ahead and tell Auron. Seymoron tries to kill Tidus, but Kimahri comes to rescue him, followed by everyone else. Yuna starts to send Seymour, but Seymour then tells Kimahri that he killed every single Ronso and will get away with it (because Yevon supports him, the bastards). This pisses Kimahri off, and Seymour tells Yuna to let him kill Kimahri and join the party so he can become Sin and kill everyone. Tidus, Yuna, and Kimahri won't let that happen, so Seymour gathers the Pyreflies he obtained from killing all the Ronsoes and turns himself into a Sin-like creature. Time to fight it: Seymour Flux and Mortiorchis!
This is one of those really, really hard fights. To start off, DO NOT SUMMON until Seymour gets low on HP. He counters any Aeon with Banish, which kills the Aeon and you can't resummon it. Seymour and Mortiorchis attack together in a pattern. Here is the pattern:
- Seymour uses Lance of Atrophy, which deals minor physical damage and inflicts Zombie on the target.
- Mortiorchis uses Full Life on the Zombified character, which kills him or her.
- Seymour uses Lance of Atrophy.
- Mortiorchis uses Full Life on the Zombified character.
- Seymour casts Dispel on the party.
- Mortiorchis uses Cross Cleave, which deals major physical damage to the party.
As you can see, this is why you need Zombie immunity for this fight. And I think they go right after one another, so you need to get Auron and Yuna (the characters with Zombie immunity) in there FAST. And need I not tell you that Cross Cleave HURTS?
Have Tidus cast Hastega immediately. Having Rikku Mix in this fight is a waste since Seymour's Dispel hits the whole party. If you can believe it, Seymour is succeptable to both Silence and Poison, so have Lulu cast Bio and Wakka use Silence Attack, unless you have a weapon that inflicts this status all the time. Just so you know, Bio only has a 5% chance to connect, so hopefully you'll get it. You can Steal Elixirs from him, so make sure to stock up (Yuna can Steal, and she's one of the characters with Zombie immunity, so that should help). Use any attacks you want to against Seymour. If you kill Mortiorchis, it'll restore its HP using Mortibsorption from Seymour. When Seymour gets under 52,500 HP, he'll cast Protect on himself. Dispel it immediately. He won't use it again. Keep at him.
When Seymour gets under 35,000 HP, his attack pattern changes. Here's what happens:
- Seymour casts Reflect on himself
- "Mortiorchis enters Auto Attack Mode!"
- Seymour bounces a Flare spell off himself and onto your party
- Mortiorchis says "Ready to annihilate!"
- "Seymour watches and waits."
- Mortiorchis uses Total Annihilation, which is VERY dangerous. It deals non-elemental magic damage to all characters, then deals 6-8 random hits on random characters, and then deals non-elemental magic damage to all characters again.
Yeah. I think you see that this is gonna be hard to survive, even at full HP. So you need to cast your barriers now (Seymour can't Dispel you anymore). Have Rikku mix two Curtains of any kind to get the four big statuses up (Protect, Haste, Shell, and Regen). Also, if Seymour casts Reflect, cast Dispel on him, and he'll damage himself with Flare! When he gets under 20,000 HP at this point, a good offense is the best defense, especially if it's right after Total Annihilation. When he gets down to a point where Bahamut's Mega Flare will kill him in one hit, summon Bahamut and make Seymour bite the dust again. You'll win a Level 4 Key Sphere from him, two if you get the Overkill.
After the fight, Yuna wonders why he will become Sin only with Yuna's help, and why Jecht will be saved if he does. She makes Tidus reveal finally that Sin is Jecht. Tidus says that he thinks Jecht wants Tidus to kill him.
[edit] I Dreamed a Dream
In the next area, you'll see that Mt. Gagazet has it's own version of The Palm! It's carvings of celebrities on the wall! Oh wait, it's just a bunch of boring old Fayths. And they're all summoning something. But what? And then, for some COMPLETELY random reason, Rikku immediately accuses Auron of hiding something. Auron puts her in her place, and the Assclown whines once again that this is HIS story. Stop being so damn selfish! Damn, even Squall wasn't this selfish, and he's the king of all selfishness! Sometimes I wonder if Zidane is the only hero in the series that's truly a people person (Cecil comes close, but he does have a few problems of his own). And thankfully, for that comment, something knocks out Tidus.
Tidus wakes up at...his houseboat in Zanarkand? Anyway, the purple kid is inside. Wakka and Rikku try to wake Tidus up, but something is going on. The kid tells Tidus that he's not dreaming. Rather he is a dream? Oh thank God, I was hoping the Assclown was just one of our nightmares, and that we all know who the real hero is. The purple dude tells Tidus that there was a war between Zanarkand and Bevelle over 1,000 years ago, and Zanarkand lost. The people there all turned themselves into Fayths, and they summoned a dream Zanarkand that would last in a memory. He then asks Tidus to stop them from dreaming by beating Sin (much to Yuna's cries for Tidus to wake up).
Just then, Tidus wakes up. He lies and says he just had a dream. Anyway, before going on, go back to the place you fought Seymour at. There's a chest with the Saturn Crest inside, which is an ingredient for Kimahri's ultimate weapon.
