Okay. No funny intro this time. I used up all my humor. Go yell at BH.

Anyway, before you enter the cave, you'll see a scene where Lulu mentions that the first Summoner she ever guarded, Ginnem, stopped her pilgrimage. There's a Fayth inside this place, according to her, that isn't part of the scheduled Pilgrimage route. Well, we're gonna go down here and check it out!

[edit] The lost Aeon

This is a dark and gloomy cave, known only as the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth. Well, it's time to check out what's here. First, the enemies! First, let's talk about the ones you can capture here for the Monster Arena. Yes, you have to do that everywhere. And you have to capture 10 of each before leaving this area. Why? Because I said so, that's why. And it puts a monkey off your back for later. Plus, it's fun to go around capturing monsters instead of killing them. It's more environmentally conscious.

First up is the Epaaj, which we already talked about.

Next is the Yowie! I don't know why the hell they gave the Yowie! that name, but I'm always gonna put an exclamation point buy it. Anyway, it's fast and can make you say "Yowie!" when it Petrifies you with its physical (it's a lizard, what did you expect?) You can Steal a common Soft and a rare Petrify Grenade. Use Tidus, Wakka, and Kimahri physicals to kill it (actually, just Wakka physicals, since you have to capture these). It'll drop the usual weapons and armor for a lizard, so go back and look at the other lizards to find out what it drops. I'm not typing it again. You know, most people aren't even this nice to even tell you what it is these enemies drop, so you should thank me.

Well, I can talk about the enemies in any order I want, so let's continue with the small ones. The Thorn is another plant like enemy, and thankfully it's not as dangerous as the Funguar. You know, when I first saw this enemy I was hoping to meet the real Thorn and his pal Zorn, because they have the best theme music ever. Well, maybe not the best, but it's pretty damn good. Go listen to it. It's called "Jesters of the Moon." Anyway, you can Steal 2 common Silence Grenades (oooh, how long's it been since we stocked up on these?) and a rare Ether, so get lots of 'em. They drop stat boosting equipment and weapons that randomly put enemies to Sleep and armor that provides protection against it.

Next up is the Imp, which isn't an actual Imp, but another Gandarewa type enemy. They're flying enemies with high magic defense, so Wakka has to snipe them down. You can Steal lots of Lightning Gems from them, so stock up. The common Steal is 1 and the rare is 2. They drop lightning elemental weapons and armor that provides lightning protection or immunity. Their weapons can also increase Strength or Magic a bit.

Next up is the Nidhogg, which is a very powerful dragon type enemy (hey, remember these?). They have a very powerful breath attack, so watch out. Definitely go for them first when Stealing. The common Steal is a Hi-Potion and the rare is a Gold Hourglass. These items are VERY, VERY RARE, so hopefully you'll get lucky here. As for what they do? Well, here you go!

  • 8 will teach an Aeon Slowga
  • 30 will teach an Aeon Delay Buster
  • 30 will add Slowstrike to a weapon
  • 20 will add Slowproof to an armor

Anyway, they have sky high defense, so Auron needs to kill them (well, actually capture 10 of them like with any other enemy here, but you get my point). They drop the same stuff the Yowies! do, so look wherever I told you to look up there.

The last small enemy is the Dark Element. This is an elemental enemy that has sky-high defense. It always attacks in a pattern. It'll start by casting Reflect on itself, and then it'll start using Drain and Osmose. Osmose is the worst, since it drains your precious MP away. You can Steal Shining Thorns from them. This is a new item, and 4 will teach an Aeon Mental Break. Now, how to kill this thing? It doesn't have any weaknesses for Lulu to exploit, and you want to capture it. You'll have to kill it with physicals. Auron's Armor Break will lower its defense so you can kill it with normal Wakka and Auron physicals. It drops various elemental weapons and armors that provide various elemental resistances.

Now for the big guys. The Valaha, which is ANOTHER horrible blunder by this supposedly good translator, is my alter-ego (it should've been spelled Valhalla, because that's where the great Odin lived). Anyway, it's got tough physicals and lots of HP. It's item draw sucks because you can only Steal Hi-Potions from it. The common is 1 and the rare is 2. To kill it, just use Auron and Wakka physicals until you capture 10 of them. Their weapon drops are fire elemental or can randomly inflict Silence and their armor drops increase your max HP by 10%.

In my age, the Ghosts were among the earliest enemies. But here, they're towards the end. When you first meet one, have Kimahri Lancet it. This will teach him Doom, which puts a character into Condemned status. In this game, since nothing's time based, it counts down from 5 to 0 and then you die. Catching these guys is tough because they have sky high defense and Armor Break immunity. But I'll tell you they have 9,999 HP so you can keep track of how much damage you're dealing. They have no weaknesses, so try to get their HP down to a manageable level and have Wakka or Auron deliver the final blow. Oh, and definitely try to Steal from them. They're the first enemy in the game you can steal a Phoenix Down from, so now's your chance to stock up. Their rare Steal is a Farplane Shadow, which is a nice item. Here's what it does:

  • 30 will teach an Aeon Death
  • 30 will add Deathtouch to a weapon
  • 15 will add Deathproof to an armor

So you want to stock up on these. When they "die," you'll get for the first time, weapons that increase Strength by 10%! (or 5% if you're unlucky). Their armor provides Instant Death protection (but not immunity), increases your max HP by 10%, or has the No Encounters ability. This prevents random encounters, and you'll need this for later in the game, so make sure you get one.

The last enemy here to capture is our beloved Tonberry. Do NOT attempt to Steal from it. It has the same stuff to Steal as the Ghost did, and it has a nasty counterattack called Karma, which deals set unblockable defense ignoring damage based on how many enemies you killed. Kill it with powerful attacks, and make sure either Wakka or Auron delivers the deathblow. If you're lucky, you could win a nice Level 2 Key Sphere. Its weapon drops randomly inflict Instant Death or Slow, and its armor drops protect against Instant Death but don't provide immunity.

So, make sure you have 10 of all of these enemies.

Now, there are three enemies here you can't capture. The first is the Mech Hunter, which is, as you'd expect, another enemy you can kill by Stealing from it. It's prize? Al Bhed Potions. It drops various elemental weapons or armor that casts things on you when your HP gets low.

The next enemy is the Defender. This is a Yevonist Machina, so you can't kill it by Stealing. It's actually the same thing as the Defender X boss, only slightly weaker. Have Auron use Armor Break, and then go with physicals. It only has 10,000 HP, so don't be afraid to Summon.

The last enemy of this kind is the Magic Urn. Now, unlike in previous games, you don't have to give up all your Elixirs. What you do is Steal from it and you'll either get a random item or the Magic Urn will blow up and you'll take a lot of damage. I suggest running away. But if you insist on getting prizes, here's what it has to offer:

So get these if you want, but you really don't have to.

Also, there are Malboros and Coeurls down here. If Kimahri didn't learn Bad Breath yet, Lancet a Malboro to learn it.

So now, we get to see how to get through this damn cave. Follow the path to the northeast. When you see a path jutting off, go to the right. There's a chest at the end with a Megalixir. Go back to the main path and continue north. You'll see a scene here. Lulu and Auron mention that someone stole a Fayth from a temple somewhere and put it in this cave so the Summoners wouldn't reach it and wouldn't obtain the Final Aeon. Rikku is happy at this news because she doesn't want any Summoners, especially ones with bad voice acting that happen to be her cousins, to die.

Shall we press on? Anyway, you'll eventually come to a four way junction. Go east to find a chest with a Level 2 Key Sphere and go back to the junction. There's nothing in the north branch, so go west. You'll come to another four way junction. Go north to find a chest with a Fortune Sphere, which, of course, is the rarest Sphere in the whole game (well, not quite, there are two others that are rarer). The east branch at this four way junction goes nowhere, so take the west branch again. Here, go west to find the Al Bhed Primer XXV, which translates the letter Y for you. At this point, you should know every letter except the last one, so it'll be the only one that appears in a different color. It's still funny, though, how many Al Bheds will say "Crawy" if you talk to them. I find that "Crawy" myself. You know, just for fun I might make all Z's in this guide from now on W's just to piss you off, but I'm a nice guy so I won't do that.

No. This guy is horrible.

Anyway, go north at this fork for a chest with 2 Mega-Potions inside. Go east from here, and save your game. A boss fight is coming up! You'll see Lady Ginnem here! She'll be jealous that you're alive and summon a not-so-legendary Samurai. Sadly, it's not Gilgamesh. Instead, we have the lame Yojimbo, who also has a lame name. Japanese sounding names always suck except for Samurai and Ninja equipment, and Square still insists on using the bullshitty Hepburn translation of Japanese, which the Japanese people really hate (Hecko, not a word out of you about this comment).

This guy is much cooler.

So anyway, the fight is so easy you don't even have to try. Just pound him. Don't let his Overdrive fill up though. He has only 35,000 HP also so a few Aeon Overdrives should do the trick. Don't bother Stealing because he doesn't have anything. He doesn't even drop anything when you kill him. When you do, though, Lulu will laugh it off because she's used to killing people. Selfish again, I say.

So now, you have a teleporter tile. You can use it to go east, west, or north. Go west first to get a Flexible Arm for Rikku, which is a weapon with 4 empty slots to fill with whatever you like. Although the armors with four slots are better, you might want to try a few things (though don't waste your good customization items!) on it. Though if you're low on something or if the ability requires too much, save it for the armor. Go back to the teleporter room and take the teleporter east to find 2 X-Potions and an MP Sphere. Now, go north. Watch the scene here and when he asks you a question, pick the third option ("To defeat the most powerful of enemies." He'll then ask you to pay him 300,000 Gil for him to join you. You can actually choose how much to donate. If you donate over 200,000 Gil, he'll lower his price to 270,000 Gil. If you do it again, he'll lower it to 250,000 Gil. That's the lowest you can pay. If you opt to pay him 600,000 Gil instead, you'll get 2 Teleport Spheres in addition to having him join you. Go with the 250,000 Gil. Now, Yojimbo is useless as an Aeon (you have to pay him 1,000,000 Gil in battle for him to be any effective), but we need him to get other things.

Now, save your game and go all the way out of the cave.

[edit] The Monster Arena and Remiem Temple

Now that we've done all this, go all the way back to the Calm Lands. Get on a Chocobo and go to Remiem Temple to see Belgemine. You can now fight her Yojimbo. Beat it to win 8 Shadow Gems. If you try to beat it again you'll get 10 Power Spheres.

Now, get Yuna, Rikku, and every Aeon a full Overdrive bar. Next, go to the Monster Arena. Save your game, equip armor with Auto-Phoenix, and talk to the guy. He'll give you 40 Silver Hourglasses for capturing 10 of each Fiend in the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth. Also, you can fight the enemy now.

The enemy is the Don Tonberry. And he's not easy. Have Tidus IMMEDIATELY open with Hastega. Now, defend for four turns until the Don Tonberry gets close to you. If you attack it sooner, it'll counter with a VERY powerful version of Karma. Just wait until he gets closer, and only attack when he's staring you in the face. Having max HP in this fight doesn't really matter (unless somehow Karma can't kill you. For this reason, it's a good idea to have Yuna Steal (and ONLY Yuna).) You can Steal 2 common Candles of Life and a rare Designer Wallet. The Candles of Life actually have some usage in some of the upcoming fights. Here's what they do:

  • 30 will add Zombiestrike to a weapon.
  • 10 will add Zombieproof to an armor.

The Designer Wallets aren't as useful. If you have 30 of them, you can add Gillionaire to a weapon, but Rikku has this ability on her ultimate weapon we're getting soon, so it's not worth it. When you feel comfortable by killing it with Bahamut's Overdrive, summon him to kill the Don Tonberry.

If you somehow win, you'll get 3 Farplane Winds (6 for an Overkill), and this is your best way to get armor which has Instant Death immunity. It also drops this armor sometimes, along with various weapons that ALWAYS inflict damage of a certain status and various armor that provides status immunity. Try to get as many of these as you can.

When you're ready, head back northeast of the Calm Lands. We're almost there!
