[edit] Chocobo Racing

What? More Chocobo Racing? Anyway, save your game at the Save Point in the middle, and go back and see the Chocobo Trainer. It's time for some races! You can do various races. Initially, you'll have to beat the time the trainer gives you. To win after that, you'll have to beat your own best time. Here are the prizes you'll win:

Chocobo Racing prizes
Race Initial time to beat First win Subsequent wins
Wobbly Chocobo 12.8 seconds 1 Elixir 1 X-Potion
Dodger Chocobo 16.8 seconds 1 Level 1 Key Sphere 1 Mega-Potion
Hyper Dodger Chocobo 18.5 seconds 1 Level 2 Key Sphere 1 Ether

Well, you already beat Wobbly Chocobo, so I guess I have to tell you about the other two races. In the Dodger Chocobo, the Chocobo is a lot easier to control, but someone will be throwing Blitzballs at you. If you get hit, you're stunned for a few seconds. In the Hyper Dodger Chocobo, the Blitzballs move a lot differently, and you also have birds flying at you. It's hard to do.

After you beat these races, you'll unlock the Catcher Chocobo, which is incredibly difficult. Basically, you're racing the trainer across the Calm Lands. There's a timer, and the time you finish in is only your gross time. The game calculates your net time based on how many birds hit you and how many balloons you pick up. Each balloon knocks off 3 seconds and each bird puts 3 seconds onto the timer (in addition to stunning you). After your net time is calculated, if it's lower than the Trainer's, you win! The first time you win, you'll get a Level 3 Key Sphere! (The first one in the game). If you win again, you'll only get a prize if you beat your personal best. The prize is a Turbo Ether.

However, the real goal is to get a negative time. To do this, you need to get lots of balloons (you'll need at least 16) and not get hit by any birds. If you do this, you'll get the Sun Sigil! This is a very important item and you'll need it for Tidus's Ultimate Weapon. In order to do this, you'll NEED to get the 5 balloons at the start, and then be VERY careful not to get hit by any birds. Move around a lot. Getting the Balloons and dodging the birds is more important than the one single second you lose moving left or right a bit.

[edit] The Caladbolg

We can't upgrade it yet, but let's just get it now.

Speaking of Tidus's Ultimate Weapon, we can get it now if we want. So, let's do that! In the north end of the Calm Lands (North-Northwest, actually) you'll find a person guarding a little ledge in the canyon. He'll let you out of the way because you won the Chocobo Race and didn't leave the Calm Lands. Go down there. The Celestial Mirror will react and you'll get the Caladbolg.

Unfortunately, though, we can't use it just yet. We have the Sun Sigil, but we also need the Sun Crest, which we'll get later. So just keep it around.

[edit] Inventing new Creepies

Now, save your game and go to the far east side of the Calm Lands. There's a path here to another area. Here is the Monster Arena. Save your game and talk to the guy. He'll tell you he needs more monsters for the arena! He'll tell you that you have to capture mosnters by equipping special weapons. He sells these weapons. Buy one for Wakka and one for Auron. They will be your two monster capturers. For Auron's weapon, you'll have to add Piercing onto it. Note that this requires 2 Level 2 Key Spheres, but it's worth it. You have plenty of these anyway.

Now, go back into the Calm Lands and capture 10 of each enemy here. As a reminder, you'll need to catch:

You don't need to catch any of the mechanical things here because they can't be captured.

So once you've done all that (spending a long time, of course), go back to the Monster Arena. Save your game. Try to equip armors that have multiple immunities or absorptions. Water immunity is the most important, but you probably won't have enough Water Gems to get you absorption. You should have enough Dragon Scales to get you water immunity. The next most important one is Fire immunity, followed equally by ice and lightning immunity and absorption. Make sure you have everyone with water immunity, and everyone should also be immune to or absorb at least one other element. You need to have all of the elements represented. Also make sure Yuna, Rikku, and every Aeon has a full Overdrive bar.

The dude there will give you 60 Farplane Winds. Here's what these things do:

  • 60 will add Deathstrike to a weapon
  • 60 will add Deathproof to an armor.

You WANT TO SAVE THESE!! There's a fight coming up where Instant Death Immunity is a MUST. So save them for later.

Now, for the actual fight. You're fighting the Chimerageist, which uses very powerful attacks that represent all four elements. Aqua Breath is the worst because it hits everyone, which is why I said everyone needs to have water immunity. He also uses Megiddo Flame (fire), Blizzaga (ice) and Thundaga (lightning). All of these are powerful, and it also has a physical. It has 120,000 HP and will take a long time to bring down. Elemental weapons are useless here. If you have Overdrives, use them first. You'll want to save Bahamut for when it gets under 10,000 HP, and use Curaga to heal up when your own HP gets low. You want to have Rikku open the fight immediately. Mix some Light, Lunar, or Star Curtains to get Super Mighty G, which your barriers (Haste, Shell, Protect, and Regen) up. Also, you may want to mix a pair of Musks or Hypello Potions to get Hyper Nul-All, which boosts everyones stats and makes them immune to all four elements. This can be very useful in this fight. If you want to try and Steal from it, the common Steal is 2 Mana Springs and the rare is a Stamina Spring. When it gets low on HP, summon Bahamut and use his Overdrive. When you finally bring it down, you'll win a nice Return Sphere, which brings you to any location on the Sphere Grid you visited. If you get an Overkill, you'll get two of them! Its weapon drops are various elemental weapons, and its armor drops provide ABSORPTION to various elements! You want these badly! If you get one, your next fight against a Chimerageist will become that much easier!

We can't use this yet, either.

Also, when you get the Farplane Winds, the dude will make a chest appear. Inside is the Nirvana, which is Yuna's ultimate weapon! Unfortunately we can't use it yet, either. I'll tell you when you can.

Anyway, that's all there is to do in the Calm Lands. The exit is in the northeast corner.

[edit] More Yevonist hypocrisy

How does Yevon build these things without letting us know?

In the next area, you'll meet some more Guado guards. They demand that you go to Seymoron. Of course they are his blind little followers who, along with the remaining Yevon higher ups (Mika and Seymour), think their race is the best, and that Seymour doesn't need you alive. They show more Yevonist hypocrisy and throw another machina enemy at you: the Defender X!

Don't take this guy lightly; he's TOUGH. Put up Protect immediately, and you may want to equip weapons with counterattacks, because this thing attacks almost exclusively physical. First things first: note that you can Steal Lunar Curtains from it. If Rikku's Overdrive bar is full, use two curtains of any kind to put up all four positive buffs (Protect, Haste, Regen, and Shell; the former three being the most important). Rikku will be your savior in these tough battles. After your barriers are up, have Auron use Armor Break on it to lower its massive defense. It uses Blast Punch often, which halves a character's HP, and it counters with this. It also uses Haymaker (a massive physical attack you may remember from the GT Behemoths way back in Final Fantasy VI). You can try Blinding it if you want, but note that it only has a 5% connection. Honestly, this fight has a lot of luck involved, and your best defense in this fight is a good offense and someone casting buffs. If you have an armor with Auto-Phoenix on, I strongly suggest it here if you have a lot of Phoenix Downs. When it gets low on HP, it uses Mighty Guard, so Dispel it, and then summon Bahamut for the Overkill. You'll get a pair of Level 2 Key Spheres from it.

Now, go down into the gorge under the bridge. Before we press on, we're going to do another sidequest MANDATORY trek off the beaten path.

[edit] In the canyon

Okay, go down into the canyon. There's a new enemy here: the Epaaj. It sounds kinda weird, and I don't know exactly where the name comes from. Anyway, the damn thing is tough to kill. Try to Steal some Hi-Potions if you're low on them. The common Steal is 1 and the rare Steal is 2. Their weapon and armor drops are uninteresting. Now, talk to all the people down here. One of them is named Durren. If you didn't sign Nimrook to your Blitzball team, sign this guy. He's a great goalie, but not as good as Nimrook. Also, if you want Auron's ultimate weapon, grab the Rusty Sword down here. When you're ready, save your game. We're about to enter a cave. And the enemies here are different from anything you've ever seen yet!
