Yep. This is why we should never have religious conservatives in power. Obama '08. Yes, I found room for endorsing a political candidate here. I just cast my absentee ballot yesterday. Remember, last time we mixed Church and State, people were burned at the stake.
[edit] How the hell do we get to use an airship without a World Map?
So anyway, we pick up with our good friend Baked Jake throwing our resident assclown across the room. Tidus promises him (he is Yuna's Uncle Cid after all, just like Garnet had an Uncle Cid. I still prefer calling him Baked Jake. He completely pwns Tidus by saying that Tidus needs to show some action (of course with Yuna locked away, nothing's gonna happen). So, you're in an airship, and Rikku's Brother (who is named Brother because the translator tried to be cooler than Woolsey, but actually fails at life) is the pilot. Anyway, the airship takes off, and Cid, Brother, and a bunch of other Al Bhed dudes start singing the Hymn of the Fayth (see, even the Al Bhed care and love Spira!) Cid then destroys the Al Bhed HQ using the airship's weaponry (now, how the hell did they manage to invent THIS damn thing? Well, we'll find out in a minute). After they destroy Home, Wakka will start singing "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah" because the Al Bhed now have nowhere to live. Fucking heartless. I guess he'll never change. Rikku does a highly flawed impression of Rinoa here. Bad Rikku impression count: 9.
After this, you'll get control of Tidus again, and you'll be able to explore the airship. Talk to everyone. Rikku will say that this airship is the thing you found way back in the beginning of the game. If you talk to Cid Baked Jake you'll have a funny exchange between him and Brother, who still don't know all the controls yet. I wonder what language they spoke back in ancient times?
Inside the Airship, you'll find a lot of others. In the lower corridor are the Al Bhed Psyches, who are much friendlier to you than the Goers or the Glories were. If Nimrook's contract is up right now, SIGN HIM! HE IS THE BEST GOALIE! LAY OFF THE DRUGS! In the main corridor, you'll find Isaaru, Maroda, and Pacce chilling out. They tell Tidus that not even the Al Bhed will make them stop, even though now they know the Al Bhed are really trying to protect them. They're also airsick. The n00bs. Pacce is sleeping though, so we can't talk to him. He's the reason they're all here (the Al Bhed used him as bait). You'll find Rin in the upper corridors. He'll sell you some stuff, so buy as much as you can. The Distillers he has can be useful later in the game when you're running out of a certain kind of level up Sphere, so buy lots of those. He sells weapons with no abilities but lots of room for customization, and HP increasing armor. Also, if you don't have armor with Poison and/or Petrify immunity, stock up completely on Softs and Antidotes. If you do have that armor, need I suggest you equip it right now? Don't do drugs.
Dona is hanging out down another corridor. She's considering quitting her pilgrimage. You get to decide what to let her do. I choose to have her keep going just because I want to see her die a gruesome, painful death. Anyway, after that, go back to the bridge. The only man in the entire world with any intelligence whatsoever, Auron, goes over and talks to Baked Jake. Jake'll tell Auron that he won't let Yuna continue her pilgrimage because otherwise she'll die. He'll then admit that Yuna is his niece (Wakka will flip out because he now knows Yuna's part Al Bhed if you talk to him. Somehow I still think he's more devoted to Yevon than his friends). Next, it looks like Brother finally figured out how to work the damn thing. He found Yuna.
The scene then cuts to what looks like the top of a large tower. Our hated Seymour comes out, escorted by monks (didn't we kill him? And why wasn't he sent?). On the other side is Yuna, who's wearing probably the sluttiest wedding dress I've ever seen. Hmmm...I think we all knew where this heads.... It looks like they're going to force Yuna to get married. Lulu mentions that this is at Bevelle, the capital of Spira and the Vatican of Yevonism. Now, Tidus becomes Dark Helmet and Baked Jake becomes Colonel Sandurz. Tidus demands that they set the airship for...Ludicrous Speed! And when Jake refuses because Bevelle has powerful defenses, Tidus does a very flawed impression of Dark Helmet. And considering Spaceballs kicked ass, there's a problem with this. Jake then sets a course for Bevelle.
But there's a problem! It seems that the monsters who attacked Home (and the Guadoes who were escorting them) found their way into the airship hold, and now they're attacking! Rin is very calm about it (because that's who he is). Jake then decides to blow the ship up, but Rikku interjects in a bad Baked Jake impression. Bad Rikku impression count: 10. Rikku then delivers a very strong candidate for "Worst line in a Final Fantasy game ever." The line is "Leave the Fiends to us professionals!" And Tidus supports her. It seems like everyone is on drugs and doesn't realize how lame that sounded. On top of that, WHAT THE FUCK WAS THE TRANSLATOR THINKING WHEN HE PUT THAT LINE IN!!??
This game is looking more and more like a Breath of Fire II ripoff now, isn't it?
Anyway, now, you'll have random encounters here. You'll find all the enemies you faced in the Al Bhed Headquarters, minus the Chimeras. Meaning you just get Guado Guards, Dual Horns, Evil Eyes, and Bombs, all in their super powerful upgraded form. Just use this to Level Up if you need be, because there's a boss coming up. Rin is still selling stuff, so buy the stuff from him. When you reach the upper deck, you'll see a giant dragon snaking around the sky. Lulu will mention that this is Evrae, the protector of Bevelle (so we must be near)! Again, this sounds waaay too much like Breath of Fire II. In that game, the capital of St. Evan's Church was called Evarai. Lame, lame, lame. Auron now delivers a candidate for the best line in the game (I think he says all of the candidates), "The red carpet has teeth." Baked Jake comes up on the intercom and says you have to fight the damn thing. Auron delivers another classic line that's hilarious, too. I won't spoil that one for you. Anyway, on the upper level, talk to one of the people there for four Al Bhed Potions. You WILL need them. Also, save your game. Also, equip any armor that protects against Poison and Petrify that you may have. If you have enough items to customize these abilities onto your armor, do that if you can. Rikku and Kimahri get priority on this stuff.
When you're ready to go up the elevator, talk to Rin. If you have to buy any last minute supplies, do so. This boss fight is hard in and of itself, but after the fight you're going to face a REALLY tough enemy gauntlet with NO SAVE POINTS in between, so make sure you're ready for the long haul here. When you think you're ready, go up.
Anyway, this boss very much reminds me of Volvagia from The Ocarina of Time. It's basically a water-elemental version of it. Except that it's not water-elemental. It resists all elements well. Here are its attacks. Poison Breath is by far its most dangerous move. It poisons the ENTIRE PARTY AND does massive damage. To be fair, though, it has to charge up to use it. It also has a dangerous attack called Stone Gaze, which Petrifies and Slows one character, and it ignores Slow immunity, so you'll have to have Tidus working on that Haste. Its physical is also VERY Powerful, and deals over 1,000 HP of damage. It also attacks with Photon Spray, which deals minor damage 8 times to random characters.
Now, there's a gimmick to this fight. Tidus and Rikku can make Baked Jake move the airship closer or farther away from Evrae. To do this, you have to use the Pull Back or Move In commands, which only Tidus and Rikku can use. This wastes their turn, and once Baked Jake has a turn (he appears in the queue), he'll follow that order. Evrae can move wherever he wants as well. When you're close to Evrae, it has this attack pattern:
- Physical attack or Stone Gaze
- Physical attack or Stone Gaze
- "Inhaling!"
- Poison Breath
So you don't want Evrae to be too close. If it gets too far, you can't damage it. If you're bold, try to Steal from it. You can get a Water Gem for the common Steal and 2 Water Gems for a rare Steal. Here's what these things do:
- 4 will teach an Aeon Waterga
- 20 will add Water Eater to an armor (this provides Water ABSORPTION!!!!)
You'll have to be bold though, because you can only Steal when it's up close.
You can evade Poison Breath by ordering Baked Jake to pull back. When it's pulled back it'll only attack with Photon Spray. Also, it can cast Haste on itself as a counter. When it gets down to 10,665 HP, it'll cast Haste on itself regardless and change its attack pattern. It stops using Photon Spray and starts using Swooping Scythe, which is a massive physical attack against the entire party. It also uses this as a counter. Have Wakka use Dark Attack or Dark Buster to Blind it (he's succeptible to Blind, and it really helps). If anyone gets Poisoned or Petrified, have Rikku or Kimahri Use an Al Bhed Potion. This restores 1000 HP AND Poison AND Petrification for everyone! Talk about usefulness! When you see Evrae getting under 2000 HP, have Wakka release his Attack Reels Overdrive because you want the Overkill. Evrae drops some more Black Magic Spheres for you, which are always nice. Its weapon drops randomly inflict Petrification and its armor drops randomly protect against it.
[edit] The Gauntlet
Baked Jake now decides he wants to take a nose dive towards Bevelle, because that's the only way to get it. Meanwhile, the wedding is still going on, and the Mastah Maestah Yo Mika is presiding. Kinoc sees the airship and orders his Warrior Monks to fire on the airship. There are also highly advanced robots and things that look like they were designed after the Sky Base family of enemies from Final Fantasy VI.
HOLD THE FUCK UP.
Those things are military Machina. Doesn't Yevon forbid these? It looks like a scandal in the works! Heheheheheheheheheh....
The airship fires back and Seymoron whisks Yuna away from the wedding. The airship now fires some harpoon cavles into Bevelle, and the party slides down them into Bevelle in the coolest invasion ever. Now, how the hell do Kimahri, Lulu, and Auron stay up there? They don't look like they have any balance at all.
Anyway, you'll land and you'll now have to fight a group of enemies. This consists of two Warrior Monks who use a gun and a Warrior Monk that uses a flamethrower. Damn. These guys have stronger weapons than the Al Bhed! And they're the ones that don't allow it. Hypocrites! Filthy scum! Anyway, the flamethrower dude is very powerful because that flamethrower hurts! Take him out first. You can Steal the same thing from both kinds of Warrior Monks. They have a common Hi-Potion and a rare Purifying Salt. This is a new item, so here's what it does!
- 3 will teach an Aeon Dispel.
- 30 will add No Encounters to an armor.
You'll need one armor like this for a certain area we get to go to later, so start stocking up on Purifying Salts now. Anyway, after you get rid of the flamethrower dude, kill the shotgun dudes with physical attacks. Both of these enemies drop armor with interesting abilities. Their weapon drops either increase Strength by 5% or have the Magic Counter ability, which lets you counterattack any spell you get hit with. Their armor increases Magic Defense by 5% or it can provide Instant Death (!!!) protection!
The next fight is against 2 flamethrower dudes and a YKT-63, a robot (which is also illegal under Yevonist scripture, so they shouldn't be having these). This guy's weak to fire and water (water I can understand (most FFVI machines were weak against water and lightning), but not fire). Its attacks are powerful and it can use Thrust Kick when left alone, which is like Chupon's Sneeze ability and throws a character out of the battle. Have Kimahri use Lancet to learn this skill. You can Steal a common Remedy and a rare Ether. Kill the robot first and then take down the flamethrower dudes. The robot dude drops various stat boosting weapons and elemental resisting armor.
The third fight is the same as the first one, so use the same stuff there.
The last fight is against two shotgun dudes and a YAT-99, which is like the Sky Base thing. You won't be able to attack it initially, but oh my Yevon does that cannon HURT. It damages everyone, so you'll want to take the gunners down fast. You'll then run into close range and be able to attack the robot. It has the same Steals and drops as the other robot.
After this, you'll get a cutscene. Kinoc points his shotgun at the party and demands that they surrender. Tidus gets pissed, but Auron has to restrain him. Meanwhile, Yuna finally tries to send Seymour (this is why she agreed to marry Seymour in the first place), but Mika demands she not do it or he'll have the party executed. What the hell is this gangsta smokin'? Everyone is confused. Yuna throws down her weapon and kisses Seymour. This seriously disgusts everyone around them: the entire party, and especially myself. If I were Yuna I would NEVER kiss a dead guy like Seymour. But Seymour, the idiot he is, turns his back on us and orders the Warrior Monks and Kinoc to kill everyone. Kinoc says he's doing it for Yevon. At this point, Auron, the only man here with brains, reminds Kinoc that Yevon banned guns and explosives permanently. Kinoc says there are "exceptions." What exceptions? Where does it say that? They're covering something up!
Yuna won't let anything happen though. She'll threaten everyone by threatening to send Seymour, and Seymour acknowledges this. Yuna then prepares to jump off the side of the building. Tidus warns her she'll die but Yuna says, in a very damsel-in-distress kind of way, "I can fly!" Yuna summons Valefor in mid-air and it rescues her. Rikku then tries to do a bad impression of Shadow and throws a flashbomb so everyone can escape. Bad Rikku impression count: 11. Tidus loses it again and decides he wants to kill Seymour in a frenzy, but Kimahri makes him escape with everyone else. They decide to go to the Temple, since that's where Yuna is.
At the temple entrance, Lulu does her best impression of Admiral Ackbar. But it's actually more like Peppy Hare and warns everyone that it's a trap. Wakka notices an elevator, which makes him wonder if the Yevon high priests really follow the teachings. Go down the elevator. Rikku will find another panel which opens a door. This is when everyone decides Yevon is pretty much a bunch of hypocritical morons. There's an Al Bhed Primer XXII here which will translate the letter V for you. Save your game, because the hardest Cloister of Trials in the whole game is coming up!
[edit] The Bevelle Cloister of Trials
Okay. Now, you only get one shot at this, so you better get it right. Basically, the theme here is moving platforms. Push the pedestal into the path and it'll become a moving platform. Now, in the next area, you'll see a Glyph on the ground with arrows pointing in different directions. You want to press X when the arrow is pointing to the right and you're on the Glyph (you don't have to be all the way on, just partially on). If you miss it, you'll just go back to this part. Anyway, ride the platform to a dead end with a Bevelle Sphere. Take it out and put it on the pedestal. Push the pedestal back into the path to make it a platform again.
Go back to the first junction and make a right (you'll do this automatically). At the next junction make another right. Put the Bevelle Sphere into the hole here. Now, push the pedestal back onto the track to make it a platform again. Fall off the track and you'll be back at the beginning of this area. Go back to the junction you were just at and make a left this time. Get this Bevelle Sphere and put it in the pedestal. Make the pedestal a platform again and fall off the track again and you'll be back at the beginning of this area again. Make a right at the first junction. You'll come to a junction where you can take all the time you need. Make a left, and go all the way to the junction at the very end RIGHT BEFORE YOU FALL OFF THE TRACK. Put the Bevelle Sphere into the hole here to create a bridge you can't use yet. Fall off the track to go back to the beginning of this area (you'll start from the place where you made the left this time).
This time, you want to go to the second junction. Here you'll find a Glyph Sphere. Put it on the pedestal and head back to the last junction. Cross the bridge now and put the Glyph Sphere into the hole at the end. The wall will vanish into thin air (damn this temple is high tech...) and you'll find the Destruction Sphere. Don't put this in the pedestal; hold on to it. Fall off the track and go back to the second Junction. Put the Destruction Sphere into the hole here (it's where you found the Glyph Sphere) and it'll blow up a new path. Now, go back to the last junction and get the Bevelle Sphere and put it on the pedestal. Fall off the ledge. Now, go to the first junction and make a right. You'll eventually come to a place where you have to transfer platforms, just push the pedestal across to the other side.
When you reach a flight of stairs, take out one of the Bevelle Spheres and climb the stairs. Grab the chest here to get an HP Sphere. Now, step on the floor switch to bring the pedestal to you. You'll see another chest across a pit from here. Push the pedestal into the pit to make it a platform. There's a chest on the other side, which has a Knight Lance, which really boosts Kimahri's Strength. Now, go into the door on the other side and you'll be in the atrium.
Tidus flips out like a schoolgirl again and tries to open the heavy door blocking access to the Chamber of the Fayth. Wakka gets upset at this, but Kimahri helps Tidus. Hey, it's that purple dude with the crappy voice from the beginning of the game! Auron tells you that the kid is actually a Fayth and it joins itself with Yuna to allow her to summon an Aeon. You'll get it now. And it's the Summon of all Summons, Bahamut, King of the Dragons, and lord of all Summoned Monsters! His power is now yours!
But you're not getting out that fast! The Warrior Monks with the forbidden guns and Kinoc are outside arresting you and bringing you to the Yevon courtroom! Auron delivers another classic line.
