And now for something COMPLETELY different. Well...not really, but something certainly completely random.
[edit] Deserts never end, do they?
Well, our resident assclown, Tidus, wakes up to find himself in a lake. But it's not a lake...it's an oasis! We're in the middle of a desert! Anyway, there's a chest in the water with 4 Remedies. So anyway, time to hop out of the Oasis. Sadly, Kaipo isn't around here, and Tidus is all alone. None of the others are there. So the assclown has to journey on his own. Surprisingly, he doesn't flip out. Anyway, you'll get in a fight almost immediately.
This is against a Zu, which you'll remember from previous games to be a bigass bird. It has A LOT of HP and is tough to bring down, and it has powerful attacks, and it can Blind you. Since Tidus doesn't know how to Steal yet, you won't be able to pick up its stuff. Just tough it out. Lulu and Auron will join you mid-battle, so you'll have some support. When you win, Lulu and Auron will rejoin you permanently. Keep moving forward and you'll meet up with Wakka again, who will rejoin you. There's a chest with 8 Al Bhed Potions. SAVE THESE ITEMS. YOU WILL NEED THEM. Anyway, go onto the next area.
Go right at the fork to find Kimahri trying to run up a hill. You'll have to play a little game of cat-and-mouse with him. Kimarhi feels guilty about losing Yuna, and Tidus says it's not his fault, even though it is, and it's Tidus's, and Wakka's, and Lulu's and Auron's. So you all fucked up. Nice going, losers. Anyway, the fork dead ends here, so you'll have to go back the other way. You'll find Rikku camping out in a tent. She'll wonder where Yuna is, too (if you talk to her before finding Kimahri, she'll say "Kimahri, too!" in a way I think is just fucking hilarious. I often do that over and over just for kicks). Anyway, Rikku says she wants to tell the party something, but Wakka stares her down like he wants to maul her. I say put a piece of duct tape over her mouth, and the problem is solved. Rikku says that you're on Bikanel Island in the Sanubia Desert. The Al Bhed live there and they rescued Yuna. Wakka accuses them of kidnapping, and Rikku has nothing to say. Rikku says she'll take you there if Wakka keeps his mouth shut. She also mentioned some Yevonist terrorists attacked that place. Wakka says the Al Bhed must've deserved it, the insensitive bastard. Tidus breaks them up and they all press on. Save your game here, and open the chests for 2 Ethers and 8 more Al Bhed Potions. Since you don't have Yuna for this area, these are her replacements. You have to use them with the Use command though.
[edit] When I play the game I am lost in a phase, then I find out I'm stuck in Rikku's maze
Damn! The music in this place kinda reminds me of "Rawest Forest," that SMRPG remix of the Forest Maze song. This area also reminds me of the Forest Maze, because it's impossible to find the way out! Well, you're going to have to follow Rikku's route to get out of here, just like in the song you follow Geno's route!
The first battle you'll face here is a tutorial battle against two Mech Guards, which shows you that you can Steal from them to not only get items, but to destroy them! Unfortunately, you won't get to wear their parts, like Locke did, but you'll get some AP and stuff. I should probably talk about the Mech Guards anyway. They're metallic, so they're weak to lightning (if you want to kill them the old fashioned way and get the Overkill). You'll steal wussy Grenades from them if you decide to kill them the cheater way. They drop lots of Hi-Potions though. Their weapons have various elemental properties, but their armor drops have SOS Nul abilities, which as you know give you elemental immunity when your HP gets low.
Now, I guess it's time to talk about the other enemies here. First is the Sand Wolf, which is another of the dog type enemies. They can put you to Sleep and Silence you with their physicals. You can REALLY stock up on Sleeping Powder by Stealing from them (their common Steal is 2 of them!). They drop the usual dog stuff (Sleep and Silence resistant armor and armor that increases your Magic Defense by 5%, which is at this point becoming the norm). The next enemy is the Alcyone, which will solve all of your Smoke Bomb problems. It has one for a common Steal and two for a rare Steal. It can Blind you with its physicals, sadly. It drops armor that's resistant to Blind if you haven't guessed. The last of the little enemies here is the Mushussu, another fire breathing dragon. You can steal a common Hi-Potion and a rare Silver Hourglass, and I hope you've been collecting these elusive items. Its fire breath attack is, of course, very dangerous for the whole party. You'll need to use Auron and Kimahri physicals to bring it down. It has a nice armor drop that increases your max HP (yes, max HP) by 10%!
Beyond the little enemies, there are several powerful enemies here. First is the Zu, which we've fought before. If the Alcyone's didn't have enough Smoke Bombs for you, these guys carry even MORE!!! They have 3 for a common Steal and 4 for a rare Steal! Its drops aren't that interesting though. Weapons and armor that sometimes cast Blind (in the case of the weapon) and sometimes resist it (in the case of the armor). Its attacks are powerful, but get rid of enough of its HP and it'll fall from the sky and REALLY be hampered. Its main problem is its HP, something which it has a whopping 18,000 (this is NOT a typo) of.
If the Zu didn't have enough HP to satisfy you, the Sand Worm should fill you in nicely. This big fella has 45,000 HP of bigassness. Occasionally, it'll eat a character, temporarily removing him or her from the battle (reminds us of the Zone Eater, no? Although it won't send you to a cave where you'll find a dark mimic waiting). And it'll spit him or her out after a few turns. So first, what items does this guy have? Well, it has some new ones, of course! Its common Steal is 2 Shadow Gems. What do these things do? Eight (8) of them will teach an Aeon Demi (yes, you can still access your Aeons even though Yuna isn't in the party). That's all though. Its rare Steal is 2 Stamina Springs. These things can do a lot more:
- 6 will teach an Aeon Power Break.
- 60 will teach an Aeon Drain.
- 2 will add Strength +5% to a weapon.
- 2 will add Defense +5% to an armor.
So as you can see, you'll need a lot of these if you want to make the most of them. There are more enemies later in the game that have easier ways of getting them, but if you wind up with lots of them, all the power to you. So, how to defeat this thing? Lulu. It's weak to both Ice AND Water (like any good sand mosnter should be). Its weapon drops increase Strength or Magic Power by 5% or they can randomly inflict Slow on a target. Their armor has the same HP + 10% ability the Mushussu had, or it can have Auto-Potion! This ability allows you to use recovery items whenever you get damaged. This has some VERY practical use here since you don't have Yuna to heal you.
Anyway, the path from here is linear, except for a spur out to the left with a chest with 4 Hi-Potions inside.
The next area is enormous and seems to have a very high rate for a random encounter. As a rule, the right half has weaker enemies (everything but Zus and Sand Worms) and the left half has stronger ones (Zus and Sand Worms included). However, there is a very, very familiar new enemy that appears in BOTH areas. You probably know all about the Cactuar by now. This guy has high defense and speed, runs away a lot, and uses 10,000 Needles to attack, which will kill a party member no matter what. You can Steal a common Chocobo Feather, which you've seen before, and a rare Chocobo Wing, which is a new item. Here's what it does:
- 16 will teach an Aeon Hastega (this is entirely useless except for completion purposes, since Aeons are always around solo).
- 80 will add Auto-Haste to an armor (this is their main use, so save up! Later in the game you'll be able to find a few ways to speed this process up)
Cactuar weapon drops rule. They have Initiative, which increases your preemptive attack rate, and HP and MP stolls, which I mentioned in a previous part are like Tintinabars.
There are a lot of chests here. First in the right half, follow (but don't hug!) the right wall. You'll eventually see a chest with another 4 Hi-Potions. Once you get this, make a complete U-turn and go all the way to the lower left corner of the right half for a chest with 2 Mega-Potions. There's a chest in the longish rock thing with 2 X-Potions. Now, go along the center left wall. Eventually you'll come to a much-needed save point and a chest with 8 more Al Bhed Potions. You may have noticed that you can also win these after battle. Now, go down into the left half. There are lots more ruins here and tougher enemies. Also, there are in-battle treasure chests here. They have X-Potions or Ethers. Since you can now get lots of X-Potions, I should probably tell you that they have some uses other than HP recovery:
- 30 will teach an Aeon Cura
- 5 will add HP +5% to an armor.
In the ruin closest to the entrance to this area (you'll have to enter from the back side), there are two chests. The first has a whopping 10,000 Gil and the second has a Level 2 Key Sphere. In the upper right corner of the left area is a ruin with the Al Bhed Primer XVII, which translates the letter Q for you. Lastly, there's a chest in the bottom of the area with an Elixir inside. The big ruin on the end has another one of those runes on them. Apparently these runes are written in Al Bhed. It'll take awhile to figure out the meaning, so just keep them in mind. Now, go back to the save point and go north. Near the exit is an Al Bhed Primer XVIII, which translates the letter R for you (it's by the sign). Now, head north into the next area.
Actually, we're going from east to west as we cross the desert, despite the fact that it looks like we're going north-south. So I'll just say forward is north, even though it's not technically north. We're following game rules, not compass rules (that rule is for games which actually have a movable camera, like Final Fantasy XII, which is not only a better game than this, that game had much, MUCH better voice acting than this one.
There's a new enemy here: the Mech Gunner. If you can tell by its looks and the noises it makes, you can Steal from it to disassemble it. You'll Steal lots of Al Bhed Potions from them. They don't give much to level up from (and I don't blame then because you can kill them just by swiping their stuff). Their armor drops have all kinds of effects when your HP gets low.
Anyway, if you go to the right you won't find much. There's a stone with a Cactuar on it overlooking a valley covered in a sandstorm. We can't go there yet; we'll have to come back later (and the game won't let you travel through a sandstorm. Hell, is there a game that DOES (well, there's FFXII, but even then you can't go where the sandstorm's REALLY heavy). Anyway, if you look on the left you'll see a passage that sprouts out to the left. Among the rocks there you'll find a chest with 8 Hi-Potions. There's a quicksand pool here also. Look inside for a chest with the Mercury Crest, which you need for Rikku's ultimate weapon. And trust me, you WANT Rikku's ultimate weapon, especially if you want to get lots of the really, really rare items.
If you go back to the main path you'll see a chest sitting outside a quicksand pool, but if you approach it sinks in! If you want the chest, you'll have to beat a REALLY tough monster called the Sandragora. You'll need to watch out for Seed Burst, which deals a LOT of damage and if your characters are still alive they'll probably be Confused. It's weak to Fire, so have Lulu cast Fira (or, if she knows it, Firaga) and use whatever other attacks you have. If Rikku or Kimahri gets confused, you're screwed, because there goes your healing. Just keep attacking it and eventually it'll fall. It has about 12,500 HP. Oh, and you can Steal 2 Remedies most of the time and 10 Musks as a rare steal. They drop weapons that can inflict Poison, and armor that protects against Poison or increases HP a bit.
Once you beat it, you'll get the chest which has 3 Megalixirs inside! There's another quicksand bog nearby with another Sandragora and another chest. This one has 2 Teleport Spheres! These are GREAT Spheres for later in the game, because it lets you move to ANY node on the Sphere Grid someone else activated! After characters finish their sections this is great for moving people around in conjunction with other Spheres we'll talk about more later.
Anyway, go up and to the left where there's a place where the path juts out and you'll see a chest in the far corner. It has 2 X-Potions inside. From that chest, go to the other end of the jut to find some rocks. There's a chest here with 3 Mega Potions. Now head all the way straight ahead. You'll eventually come to another Sandragora blocking the path. Unfortunately you have to fight it. Just fight it the way you've been fighting all the others. You're finally at your destination!
[edit] Honey, I'm Home!
Welcome to the Al Bhed's Home. The Al Bhed live here, but it's under attack by terrorists! Who could do such a thing? Someone let a lot of monsters loose here, too! And one of Rikku's friends, some guy named Keyakku (I want a name like Keyakku) gets shot down. He says that it's Yevon and the Guado who are behind the attack! First, it was just Seymour, now it's the whole religion that seems fucked up! But then some baked Jake military bloke comes in and says that the Guadoes are trying to get to the Summoners. So they DID take Yuna here! Apparently he knows English and demands that you help. Rikku says his name is Cid and he's her father and the leader of the Al Bhed. No wonder they're so damn militaristic. And I THINK he's voiced by the bloke who played that guy on Seinfeld who wished for Kramer's death.
When you regain control of Tidus, ransack Keyakku for 2 Hi-Potions. Look over on the left wall for the Al Bhed Primer XIX, which translates the letter S for you. Save your game at the save point in here. Now, go inside.
Somehow, I wonder if the Al Bhed built this place before the rest of Spira was because it's creaking, even without the attack. And what the hell is that they're screaming in the background? It sounds like "With a buoyan-t" with an accent on the t. I will love whoever tells me what this damn thing they're saying is. Because it's annoying the hell out of me. Anyway, you'll start with the random encounters here. Every time, you'll face a Guado Guard summoning various Fiends. You've seen them all before, but now they have beefed up stats and better items. The Evil Eyes now just have Musks to steal (common is 1, rare is 2). They drop usual floating eyeball stuff. The Dual Horns here have some more interesting stuff. You can Steal a common Hi-Potion and a rare Mega-Potion, so this is a good chance to stock up on those. They drop fire elemental weapons, weapons that can randomly cast Silence, and armor that increases HP by either 5% or 10%.
Next up is the Bomb. These guys have a new item you can Steal: the Bomb Core, and this is the only way you can reliably get them, because their common Steal is 2 and their rare is 3, so stock up on a lot of these. This is what the Bomb Core does:
- 2 will teach an Aeon Fira.
- 1 will add SOS NulBlaze to an armor.
- 8 will add Fireproof to an armor.
Their drops are uninteresting. The weapons are all fire elemental and the armor is all fire resistant, and you should have a lot of these already.
The last one is the Chimera. They have the same stuff to Steal as the normal Chimera (Arctic Winds and Lightning Marbles), but this time you get 3 of an item when you Steal! This is the best place to get Lightning Marbles for this reason alone. Their red color doesn't make them any different at all (maybe the Chimeras are "Chimeleons" and can change color whenever they want?) Their weapons increase Magic Power by a lot and their armor increases Magic Defense by a lot (and by "a lot" I mean 10%). The Guado Guards themselves have a common Hi-Potion and a rare X-Potion. They drop various weapons and armor that have minor stat boosts.
So in the first room you'll come to a crossroads and Wakka will make you get lost. You'll then have to fight some Bombs. After the fight, Rikku will run away. Follow her because she's the only one who knows this damn place (and considering she won't teach you how to speak Al Bhedian, what makes me think she'll help you now?) Cid will blabber something in Al Bhedian over the intercom (by now you know enough Al Bhed to say that he's gonna blow up this place, and Rikku says everyone has to get underground). Auron will ask about Yuna and Rikku says she's in a "Summoner's Sanctum." What the hell is that? Well, we won't know anytime soon because we have to face some Dual Horns first.
After the fight, Rikku will make you go straight. Follow her and go straight down the path to a dead end for 6 Al Bhed Potions. Now, go all the way back up the stairs and you'll see a greem marker which represents a door. Enter it. After a fight, you'll notice a set of 9 chests. You can only open one of them. Here's what they have:
| Row | Left column | Middle column | Right Column |
|---|---|---|---|
| Back | Potion | Remedy | Monster-in-a-box |
| Middle | Mega-Potion | Soft | Monster-in-a-box |
| Front | Monster-in-a-box | Elixir | Hi-Potion |
If you know enough Al Bhed, you'll be able to translate these. Anyway, you want the Elixir. Also, pick up the Al Bhed Primer XX here, which translates the letter T for you.
Now, go down the right path in the triple fork. You'll see two doors; one of them's broken (or maybe it's just hungry for Coral). Go all the way down to the end of the hallway and check the corner for the Al Bhed Primer XXI, which translates the letter U for you. If by this point you still can't translate Al Bhedian well enough, well, then you just wouldn't be very smart, now, would you? (The man says I can't make fun of you guys anymore, even though I don't mean it in a nasty way because you know I love all my readers and all my fans. What do you think I am, some Hollywood stuck up?) At this point, you'll be crowned an Orator (or an "unydun." Hey, honeybon, wanna be an unydun?) in Al Bhedian anyway, so...yeah.
Rikku will whine that you're going the wrong way, but don't listen to her. When you enter the room you'll be standing right next to a Chimera. Fight with all your might and get some of those Lightning Marbles you always wanted. Gotta kick the Fiends out. Not in our house, baby. No, not today. After the fight is over, you can open the chests here. But the chests won't open unless you answer some trivia questions based on how well you know Al Bhedian. The first question asks if you're Al Bhed. Say "yes" (or "oac," and if you have all the Primers up to this point, the answer will read "oes"). The next question asks who the son of the Al Bhed leader is called. Since you don't know his name yet, you'll have to use process of elimination. You can eliminate the Al Bhed Psyches and Rin's Travel Agency, since they're both not people. Then you can eliminate Cid because that's the leader of the Al Bhed himself. That leaves you with "Brother." Wow. What a lame name. What happened to Square's creation department? Were they all on drugs? The third question asks what island you're on. Answer Bikanel. The last question asks you to translate Al Bhed into Al Bhedian. Just pick the top choice, Al Bhed, since the correct answer, Em Phat, isn't there (Wow. Em Phat. That sounds, well, phat!). After this question, open the chest for a Skill Sphere, which lets you activate any "Skill" node on the Sphere Grid someone else already did, no matter where you are on the grid. Save it!
Now, Nomura decided to get evil with us again (I hate him even more) and is making us do some math. You have to solve some math problems if you want the other chest. You'll have a chance to enter the password. Here are the clues:
- "The first digit is 4 plus 1"
- "The second digit is 7 minus 1"
- "The third digit is 3 times 1"
- "The fourth digit is 2 plus 1"
Of course, you have to translate this out of the Al Bhedian. So the code is 5633 (I actually think they change this every game). Anyway, inside the chest is a Special Sphere, which is no more special than the Skill Sphere (but it is pretty damn special). It lets you activate "Special" nodes on the Sphere Grid someone else already did. Save this, too! There's also an Al Bhed Compilation Sphere here, which you can use to store the Al Bhedian you know in another file so that if you want to replay the game you can go through it with all the Al Bhedian translated for you (although in my opinion that takes half the fun out of the game).
So anyway, go back to the left and save your game. Now, enter the left door.
Wakka seems pissed. Rikku says that Sin destroyed their old city. So the Al Bheds became nomadic until Cid brought everyone together again and built this place (but in a desert? Why?). Wakka then declares hatred for the Guadoes (for the first time). You'll then have to fight some more Dual Horns. After that, go down the stairs for another cutscene. Wakka will begin to understand that the Al Bheds are "rescuing" Summoners, but this time, Tidus interjects and wonders why the Al Bheds do that. Rikku says she'll show you in a minute. When you regain control of Tidus, look at the bottom of the stairwell under the stairs for a chest with a Level 4 Key Sphere! Save this! On the other side is another Level 2 Key Sphere. Now, go into the door. This is the "Summoners' Sanctum."
Well, well, well, look who's here! It's Dona the slut and Isaaru the boring Summoner. Some Al Bheds died protecting them and these two decided to send them. The awesome, little Pacce (who's name Square had mispronounced) will come in and say that the Al Bhed says Summoners are being sacrificed. Tidus doesn't get it either because he thinks the Al Bhed should trust the Guardians.
And now, Rikku reveals why they've been kidnapping the Summoners AND why the period without Sin is called "The Calm." Apparently, Sin took its lessons properly from Sleep of Tier 3 in Final Fantasy VI. When Sin dies, it has one last trick up its sleeve: Calmness, the annoying Instant Death attack that ignores immunity. Meaning if a Summoner succeeds, he or she will die. All in a really bad impression of that slutty girl (who Rikku's voice pretty much reminds me of in general) in my high school who would flirt with the guys I hung out with just to spite me. Bad Rikku impression count: 8.
And now, Tidus proves once and for all why he's an assclown. He'll jump on top of Rikku and demand to know why no one told him sooner (in a big, whiny voice). Wakka and Lulu just told him it was too hard to say, and Tidus feels guilty for encouraging Yuna. Dona and Isaaru explain that they chose to become suicide bombers for Spira on their own accord (why else would being a Summoner guarantee automatic respect from the community and a noble title?).
We now get a flashback to our other least favorite scene: the faux laughing scene in Luca. You know, the one we harp on all the time here. The one we hate with a passion. Tidus swears on his life to protect Yuna from dying. But there's no time. Cid makes everyone leave on board some airship somewhere. Before leaving, check the lower left hand corner for a chest with 10,000 Gil inside. On board the airship, Tidus will demand to know where Yuna is so he can tell her he's sorry for egging her on. Cid doesn't believe it at all. Cid shows Tidus what real men do, and proves once and for all Tidus is the biggest wimp in the whole series: He picks him up, throws him over his shoulder and surprisingly Tidus doesn't break any bones.
