So I have a little time, so I'll start writing this part.
[edit] A forest? Looks more like a crystal cave to me...
We open in a weird crystal cave like thing: the Macalania Woods. Tidus and Auron are having a go about Yuna. Tidus wants to help her, but Auron says Yuna wants to keep them all out of her ordeal with Seymour. Tidus is actually pretty smart for a change to suspect something is up. That doesn't excuse him from being an assclown though. Auron explains that Yuna is "strong." On the contrary, she's very weak but she's just too unpredictable. They join the others up ahead.
Lucil and Elma are here with a Chocobo. They, too, congratulate Yuna, and Yuna thanks them. Whatever it is Yuna's planning, she's doing a very good job keeping it a secret. I still hate her. They won't let you go east, so you're stuck going north!
Anyway, the enemies here are all new-never before seen fun! There are some real status whores here, and that seems to be the theme of Macalania. First up are the Iguions, which, not surprisingly, will take every opportunity they have to Petrify you. Nothing new to Steal from them though. Just Softs and Petrify Grenades, although you can never have too many of either, especially when there are lots of enemies like Iguions which love to petrify you. They drop the usual weapons and, strangely, drop armor that protects against Slow or increases Defense by 5%.
Next up is the Wasp. This guy loves to Poison you and is fast. It's also flying, so you'll need Wakka to snipe it down for you. You can Steal a common Hi-Potion and a rare Poison Fang. Strange how you can't Steal Antidotes at all. They drop the usual weapons. Their armor can either increase your max MP by 10% or provide some Poison protection.
The Murussu is next. It's another one of those armadillo type things, only it has a very weird crystal-like protrusion growing out of it. You don't want to get hit by those things because they're PAINFUL. You can Steal a common Hi-Potion and a rare Hypello Potion. You'd think you could buy those things at the Moonflow, where the Hypelloesh live, but NO. You have to Steal them from the armadillos. Anyway, they drop the same stuff Iguions do, but they protect against Berserk rather than Slow.
The last of the smaller enemies is the Blue Element. As you probably guessed, this thing's water elemental. Lulu needs to kill it with Thundara, and it'll take a few hits to kill and their water spells are powerful and they attack in packs. It's too bad there's no MT option for spells in this game. In my day we had the option of having a spell target one enemy or all of them. What was Square thinking? Anyway, you can Steal a new item from these guys: Fish Scales. And they come in bunches. The common Steal is 2 of them and the rare Steal is 3!!! Anyway, here's what these things can do:
- 2 will teach an Aeon NulTide.
- 8 will teach an Aeon Water.
- 4 will add Waterstrike to a weapon.
- 4 will add Water Ward to an armor.
Oh, and they drop water elemental weapons and armor that provides both water resistance or immunity. Hope you get lots of armor with water immunity.
But there are two larger enemies here! The first is the Xiphos, which is a stronger version of the Klikk boss you fought way back in the beginning of the game! This guy is TOUGH. It has 2700 HP, high speed and power, and it can Poison you! Don't take this guy lightly. You can steal a common Hi-Potion and a rare Mega-Potion. These things are VERY valuable. Note that 60 Mega-Potions will teach Curaga to an Aeon. Their drops are interesting. Their weapons will occasionally have SOS Overdrive on them, which increases the rate your Overdrive gauge fills when you're in Near Fatal. Their armor drops increase Defense by 5%.
The other large enemy is a very familiar one. This is the Chimera. This guy is VERY tough and can attack using all four elements in very powerful attacks. Elemental attacks will do jack shit to them in damage, and they have over 5,000 HP! They have some nice things going for them though. You can steal a new item from it: an Arctic Wind. What does this do? Sit back and let CSM teach you!
- 2 will teach an Aeon Blizzara
- 1 will add SOS NulFrost to an armor
- 8 will add Iceproof to an armor
Their rare Steal is that elusive Lightning Marble, so take the time to get even more of those! They drop weapons with great bonuses to Magic Power (5% and even 10%!) Their armor drops increase Magic Defense by 10% also! Kick ASS! Last but not least, you can have Kimahri use Lancet on one of these to learn a new Ronso Rage: Aqua Breath! I miss when it was called "Aqua Rake." Know this, folks. Final Fantasy VI is still the best in the series (yes, BH, it's even better than that game with the spikey haired reject).
So, where to begin, my friends? Well, save your game and head down the linear path. There's a hidden chest behind a tree to the left with a Sleepy Cait Sith inside for Lulu. But since when does Lulu ever attack physically? There's another, more visible chest on the path. This one has 2,000 Gil inside. In the next area, there's a chest with 3 Phoenix Downs inside. You'll also meet Barthello, the idiot wimp who looks really buff and is Dona's hustler. Being a moron, he lost her. Auron will set him straight and make him stand firm. Good ol' Auron. What is he NOT good for?
Anyway, you'll eventually meet a harpist who looks nothing like Edward and he'll sing a song about butterflies. This is the start of a minigame you can play. Touch the colored butterfly to begin. You now have about 40 seconds to collect 7 Blue Butterflies without touching any red ones. Touch a red one, and you'll instigate a fight with some enemies that have really, really buff stats and are a lot harder (they're the same enemies you'll fight normally, just with higher stats). If you run out of time, you'll have to reenter the area before you can start again. Collect all 7 butterflies for an MP Sphere.
In the next area, you'll find a partially hidden chest with a Remedy next to a tree up a ramp. You can also play the Butterfly game here. Collect all 7 to make a chest with an Ether appear. Go north into the next area and save your game. Go on the southeast path to find an Al Bhed Primer XV, which translates the letter O for you. Now, get your Aeon's Overdrive gauges up (all three of them, especially Valefor's) because a boss fight is coming up. O'aka XXIII is also here selling more overpriced bullshit.
[edit] The truth about Jecht
If you try to go forward, Auron will stop you. He has something to show you, and since Auron is the king of this game, you better follow him. Yuna is impatient, but Auron pwns her ass. Auron explains that this is where Spheres are made. Spheres can absorb people's memories and act like TVs and videos and stuff. But there's a rumble. Boss time!
This is Spherimorph. It's a giant ball of water. This guy is like one of those elemental property changers. It casts random spells and uses Press often, which is a gravity based attack. Make sure your weapons don't have any elemental properties. It'll cast a spell of a certain element. It's weak to the opposite element. For example, if it casts Fire, counter with Blizzara. It will then change its weakness. And as for its physical defense? That's through the roof, so don't expect to get off that easily. I would suggest summoning Valefor for this battle since it's the only non-elemental Aeon. Although you can summon Ifrit or Ixion too if you can anticipate the attacks. Although you should save Ixion's Overdrive for a later battle. You can Steal Ethers from them. If you're lucky, you might get a nice, rare Turbo Ether which you should save. When it gets low on HP, use Valefor's Overdrive to kill it. You REALLY want to kill it with an Overdrive here because it drops Level 2 Key Spheres!!!!
You'll also get "Jecht's Sphere." Wakka will wonder how old it is, and Auron will make him play it back. It's a video of Braska's pilgrimage, featuring Auron and Jecht. Now THIS was the game I wanted to see. Not this crowd. I wanted a game with Braska, Auron, and Jecht in it. But Square decided to make a piece of shit game with Yuna as the star. And if they make an FFX-3, it's going to star a singing Rikku, which would just be an abomination to mankind. We want the prequel!
Jecht is making a movie to send back to his wife and son. He makes jokes about how there'll be a parade for Braska when they all come back. He then poses for a picture with Auron and makes funny jokes. Jecht wants Braska to take something home for Yuna. What it is, I can't figure out. The next scene shows Jecht talking to what we assume to be Tidus. He'll try to give a motivational speech, but fail. Bender Bending Rodriguez, who we all know is in this game playing Auron's body costume and Wakka's voice, did better. Although Jecht is still cool. I think Bender is Jecht's eye puppeteer.
Anyway, back in reality, Auron said he wanted to go back to Zanarkand and show Tidus the pics. Now, Tidus knows there's no way back, and he, like Jecht, had to think of the task at hand. Auron also says that Jecht loved him, but he didn't know how to say it (probably because he was an alcoholic and a celebrity, just like everyone who lives in Hollywood today). Auron will now learn a new Overdrive: Shooting Star.
Now that you have Level 2 Key Spheres, use one to teach Yuna Steal! Congrats, you now have three Thieves! And you need as many as you can get in this game.
Now, it's time to go back to the main path. Before heading to the next area, go back and play the butterfly game again. You only have 30 seconds this time. The northern game will have an Elixir as a prise and the southern game will have a Megalixir as a prize.
Now, head north into the next area!
[edit] The Frozen Tundra of Lake Macalania
Now, you're out in the ice cold regions. And Tidus, Rikku, Wakka, and Yuna are all apparently fine despite their outfits. There's some new enemies here.
First is the Snow Wolf. This is the first enemy that lets you really stock up on Sleeping Powders. There's one for a common Steal and two for a rare Steal. They drop the usual weapons. Their protections on their armor drops are from Sleep and Silence. They're weak to Fire, but have high Magic Defense. Next is the Evil Eye. It's the most dangerous thing here because it can inflict Confusion with its physical (as did its palette swaps). It's flying, so you'll need Wakka to snipe it down. It has a common Hi-Potion you can Steal and a rare Musk. It drops the usual weapons and armor that either has confuse protection or increases MP by 10%. This is good armor!
Next up is the Mafdet. Another armadillo type thing. It has all the same Steals and drops as the Murussu did, so I'm pointing you back up there. Again, piercing weapons from Kimahri or Auron will work well. The last enemy here is the Ice Flan. You'll need to have Lulu cast Fira since it has sky high defense. You can Steal lots of Arctic Winds from them. Common is one, rare is two. They drop ice elemental weapons and armor that protects against ice or provides ice immunity.
Another travel plaza! Even though it's ice cold here, this is still a better place than the Thunder Plains. Look to one side for an Al Bhed Primer XVI, which translates the letter P for you. When you're ready, go inside. I suggest spending a lot of time here, since Yuna's about to leave your party, so spend a good time leveling here.
