Ahh, now it's time for my absolute favorite part of the game: the Thunder Plains, yay!

[edit] Rikku, don't lose that number!

Last I checked, lightning is never colored red.

Welcome to the Thunder Plains, my favorite part of the game. It reminds me a lot of Lightning Lookout, a level from Donkey Kong Country 3. Now THAT was a quality series. I don't know why the hell the evil Microsoft had to buy out the great company known as Rare, which I like just as much as I do Square.

Anyway, Tidus, the resident assclown, will ask how the hell we're supposed to cross this storm. Apparently we have to run to the bigass towers which are actually lightning rods put in place to make crossing this damn place easier. Rikku then completely loses it and makes up a bad lie to go back. Apparently she hates this place. Auron will put her in her place though, and make her shut up (for the time being and just play along.

Hope you bought lightning protection armor in Guadosalam! I don't think I should have to tell you the attacks a lot of the enemies around here use. And the enemies here are VERY TOUGH, especially on an underdeveloped Rikku, who you're gonna be using a lot of from now on (no wonder she hates this place! Every time she gets struck by lightning she gives her own special little shriek that no other characters have.). The first enemy you'll face is the Gold Element. It attacks with Thundara. Counter with Lulu's Watera. But first, have Kimahri and Rikku Steal a bunch of Electro Marbles from them. Occasionally you'll get two of them. They drop lightning elemental weapons and armor that can either provide lightning resistance or immunity. I don't think I need to tell you that if you get an armor with lightning immunity you should equip it immediately. Oh, too late, I just did.

Next up is the Aerouge, which is an upgrade to that Gandarewa. These guys also attack with lightning elemental attacks. Have Kimahri and Rikku Steal from them early and often. Most of the time, they have Electro Marbles, but you can steal a rare Lightning Marble from them. These are very valuable since you can ONLY get them as rare Steals. I told you what they do in the previous part. They drop the same stuff the Gold Elements do, and they can also drop weapons that increase Strength or Magic Power by 5% and armor that increases Magic Defense by 5%. It's flying so you have to have Wakka snipe it down.

The Larvas are very dangerous foes. They have a lot of HP (1,500 (they only have 1,498 HP, CSM, stop exaggerating you n00b)). DO NOT LET THEM CAST THUNDARA ON THEMSELVES. If they do, their Magic Power increases and they'll start spamming Thundara onto you, and this will take off most of a character's HP (you can kiss Rikku goodbye if she gets hit). You can Steal a new item from them: a Lunar Curtain. On rare occasions you'll be able to steal 2 of them. These things are great for Mixing in the really, really hard battles against the optional bosses at the end of the game. And as for what else you can do with them?

  • 4 will teach an Aeon Shell
  • 8 will add SOS Shell to an armor
  • 80 will add Auto-Shell to an armor. Save this one for later unless you're really desperate. If you can get Auto-Shell on an armor now (it'll take AGES when you're only Stealing 1 or 2 at a time), I salute you. As for its drops, it only drops lightning elemental weapons and lightning resistant armor.

Next is the Buer, which can cast Confuse on you with its physical. You don't want this to happen, especially if it comes flanked by other powerful enemies, which it often does. You can Steal a common Hi-Potion and a rare Musk. You might be wondering what this does, so I'll tell you:

  • 16 will add Confuse Ward to an armor.
  • 48 will add Confuseproof to an armor.

Again, the Buer is flying, so you'll have to have Wakka snipe it down. It drops the usual weapons, and armor which protects against Confuse.

The Kusariqqu is the next enemy, and you can tell it's a lightning elemental dragon which can deal massive damage to the ENTIRE party when it breathes lightning. Too bad this guy isn't as weak as FFVI's Gold Dragon. It has a common Hi-Potion and a rare Silver Hourglass, which I hope you've been collecting. If not, start your collection pronto. Use Kimahri and Auron to kill it with their physicals. It drops the usual stuff: elemental weapons and armor that protects against Slow.

The last enemy you'll encounter in this part of the Thunder Plains is the Melusine, which I guess was named after FFV's Mellusion. It's the easiest enemy you'll fight here. "Easiest," though, is relative. It's still hard, and LOVES to Petrify you. You can steal a common Soft and a rare Petrify Grenades, and you may want to stock up on the latter.

Alright, now to talk about how to get around this damn place. First of all, I want to complain about the music. It needs more heavy metal. And less classical. Classical music is HARDLY worthy of electric storm description. It needs more Nite Mamas or Brothers in a Jar.

Now, you'll have to navigate this place VERY carefully. If you're not next to a lightning rod tower, you have a chance of getting struck by lightning. If this happens you'll see a flash. Press X and you'll dodge the lightning bolt. Don't press X and you get hit by the lightning bolt. This can get pretty annoying fast. Right when you regain control of Tidus, you'll see a treasure. Open it up for 2 Phoenix Downs. Then go north and save your game. The chest northwest of the Save Point has 2 Hi-Potions inside. Just so you know, I found this out by watching YouTube vids to refresh my memory, and it was in Japanese, so you all now know I can read katakana. Be proud of your ranking admin because he knows some Japanese.

By this point, you probably are noticing glowing stones with a very familiar looking thing engraved on them. If you press the square button while standing next to a glowing stone, you can encounter another enemy in this area: the Qactuar. This is a tough little bugger, but it's really fun to fight. It has high defense and evade (Wakka is the only one who has the accuracy to damage them easily). They attack with 1000 Needles, and you should know that this deals 1000 HP of unblockable defense ignoring damage to a character. They can also run away. But definitely try Stealing from them. You'll get some of the best items in the game: Chocobo Feathers! What do they do? Let me tell you!

  • 10 will teach an Aeon Haste (!!!)
  • 6 will add Initiative to a weapon, which increases the chance of a preemptive attack.
  • 20 will add SOS Haste to an armor, which automatically casts Haste on the character when s/he is in Near Fatal status.

The Qactuars also drop weapons with Initiative already on them, and they drop armors with HP Stroll and MP Stroll, which work like Tintinabars and restore HP or MP while you walk.

Hopefully, you're teaching Yuna the buffer spells by now (Shell, Protect, Reflect, etc). I want to tell you that once you see a Level 2 Lock on the Sphere Grid on the circle with Reflect and Dispel on it, STAY THERE AND WAIT. Steal is on the other side of that lock, and you want Yuna to learn it! So stay put.

Anyway, keep going along the left side of the path and you'll come to an alcove with another chest. This one holds 5,000 Gil. If you see a bigass lake off to your left you missed this. After you get it, keep going (Whoa. My computer was acting all fucked up and I had to reboot it and when I got it back it brought me back to right where I left off without saving! Praise be to Yevon for Firefox!).

Next, you'll meet the dumb fundie bitch Shelinda, who is so excited to see Yuna and Seymoron's wedding. Tidus says they won't get married, which makes Shelinda sad. All the more reason. She chose a life of never being able to have sex anyway. Past Shelinda is a chest in a little alcove with a Water Ball for Wakka, which is water-elemental, meaning it'll be useful here. Equip it.

Freaku just makes Tidus look even more like an assclown.

Keep going until you get to a fork in the road. Take the left fork and you'll come to a building. You'll see a lightning rod tower get struck. Freaku will freak out again and grab Tidus's leg like a little school girl, and start laughing in a bad impression of Tidus' earlier assclownish scene in Luca with Yuna when he made that horrible laugh. Bad Rikku impression count: 7. She'll flip out and totally lose it (again....) and completely chicken out. She wants to rest inside that building. You know, she's 15, but she acts like she's 15 months (and just you wait till the piece of shit sequel. Then you get to see Rikku act even YOUNGER!!!!). She'll beg and beg over Auron's intelligent points to stay inside, and Auron points out the fact that Rikku is far, far worse than the storm. I couldn't agree more. -Brick Road

[edit] Yuna ponders

Welcome back to Rin's Travel Agency, the only hotel chain in Spira! Now, how the hell do they get staff and supplies out to this part of the world? All I know is that the people here probably get paid a shitload more than the employees at the Mi'ihen Highroad branch. Yuna uses this opportunity to run into a hotel room and do something. Talk to everyone and wait for Rin to show up (Rikku will give you her long schpiel on why she hates lightning). He'll give you the Al Bhed Primer XIV, which translates the letter N for you, if you tell him you've been doing "okay." Rin will then have a nice chat with the king of FFX, the father of all coolness in the 21st century, Auron! Listen to this conversation, because Auron's voice will have you worshipping him. This is something I can't say for Assclown, Tourette-maiden, or Brussel Sprout Guado.

Follow Yuna into her room and spy on her. She's watching that Sphere Jyscal left you guys after the events in the Farplane. Tidus will spot Jyscal saying something. Yuna says he said to take care of his son. Wakka will come in and put the spying assclown in his place. Back outside, talk to Shrieku. She'll be a moron and ask if the storm is gone. Auron reminds her that the storm never ends. Rikku says she's staying but Auron puts her in her place again and drags her off. I wish I could cue the music from Peter Pan when the Indians Native Never-Never-Landers drag off the Lost Boys and watch Auron drag the uncooperative Rikku off. I still don't understand what Yuna saw in her within five seconds that makes her want to have Rikku as a Guardian. But we're stuck with her, and we have to use her because she's VERY, VERY USEFUL. She comes as part of a long line of characters who seem bad but actually kick a lot of ass in battle.

Before leaving, now's a good time to finish up your Blitzball league. Hopefully when you do, the prize in the next league will be the Status Reels. If it is, play the ENTIRE LEAGUE until you get it. If it isn't, you need to have Wakka kill more enemies.

Outside, you'll find a Yellow Shield lying on the ground. MAKE SURE YOU GET THIS. It has lightning immunity for Tidus. That makes it much harder for him to die. Anyway, go north.

[edit] The big answer to the big question.

There's a new enemy in this area: the Iron Giant. This guy is INCREDIBLY HARD. He has 3600 HP, a powerful physical, and ridiculously high defense. Hopefully Auron knows Armor Break by now. Use it and its defense will fall A LOT. This is the ONLY way to deal decent physical damage. No weaknesses to hit, either. You can, however, Steal Light Curtains from them. These are just as valuable as the Lunar Curtains, if not more so. Here's what you can do with them:

  • 6 will teach an Aeon Protect.
  • 8 will add SOS Protect to an armor.
  • 80 will add Auto-Protect to an armor.

So basically it's a physical Lunar Curtain.

Anyway, there's a fun little game you can play here now. It's called the "Lightning Dodger Game." I don't suggest doing it now, because you're too weak to be able to handle it, but the object is to dodge as many lightning bolts in a row as you can. Here are the prizes you can win; pick them up outside the Travel Agency:

You'll have to get the Venus Sigil eventually if you want Lulu's ultimate weapon. But don't worry about it now. It'll be easier when we have equipment that lets us avoid battles. If you can, try to at least get 20 in a row. The best place to dodge lightning is where the fork merges north of the Travel Agency (it's right next to the damn thing). Also, there are some minor prizes if you get hit by lightning bolts. This doesn't have to be in a row though.

As you can see, it's not as much, but these are probably easier to get.

So go north. Off to the immediate right is a chest with an X-Potion. Keep going north. Eventually, you'll be underneath a mushroom. Yuna will stop everyone and tell you that she's decided to marry (which pisses off the Assclown). She says it's a personal matter, but Tidus and Lulu both know it's Jyscal's Sphere. She promises she won't quit her pilgrimage, either. Rikku whines to the lightning again (fat chance it'll have any effect. You're not Mallow and you can't control the weather, you little twerp).

There are three other chests here with a Remedy, an Ether, and 2,000 Gil. Try to find them. When you're ready head north into Macalania, which will be our topic of choice next time, folks.
