My name is TheSwordofDoubt. You'd like to call me SOD, but I seriously prefer TSD. And I love Real Emotion. So sit back and enjoy the ride. You won't be getting off anytime soon, oh no...
[edit] Real Emotion
The game starts out with a nice view of the blitzball stadium in Luca. Oh how nice, seems like they're going to blitz! Wait, what's this game going to start out with, a mini-game consisting of us playing blitzball?! I DON'T KNOW A SINGLE FREAKIN' THING ABOUT BLITZBALL!
Oh wait...phew, seems like they're not. Instead, it shows a preparation for a concert or something. I'm getting bored so I'm summarizing the rest: it shows someone saying "Y.R.P In position. It's showtime, girls." To the stage, we see Yuna, she transforms in a new outfit that will later be known as Yuna's Songstress Dressphere(and starts singing my absolute favourite song of all time, REAL EMOTION! It's only matched by Simple and Clean from Kingdom Hearts), Rikku and Paine are introduced to us, they beat up the guards trying to get to them, the two get to the stage, where...
- HP: 82
- MP: 9999
- Gil Stolen/Dropped: 300(Max)/100
- Items Stolen/Dropped: Hi-Potion(Normal & Rare)/Phoenix Down
- EXP: 3
- AP: 1
- Difficulty: Normal: Easy/NGP: Please
Normal: Yuna's imposter(yes it's a fake, but the real Yuna also wears that outfit in-game) is accompanied by two Goons. If you are lucky enough to get a First Strike, kill them quickly, since "????" will cast Ecstasy(please tell me if I spelled that wrong), which I THINK gives them Haste, Regen, and Double HP. It's nothing to worry about, but it's going to be a real nuisance, since your real target is, of course, "????", and you're going to waste a few more turns killing them both. As for "????", once she casts Ecstasy, down she goes to Thunder. It only causes about 8 dmg. so kill off the Goons and then focus your attacks on her. Paine should attack normally and Rikku should steal(You ESPECIALLY want that Hi-Potion), then help in attacking. Give the command for Rikku to attack first, then Paine, as this will boost Paine's attacks more due to the chain attack. Just keep attacking and they'll go down. You can also steal Budget Grenades from the Goons and then throw them for some heavy dmg; it leaves the Gooons either dead or with less than 10 HP and wipes out about a quarter of "????"'s HP. If you lose this battle, sell all your PS2 games and your PS2, then jump into the sea with stones in your pockets. You shouldn't even be living.
NGP: You should have at least a few Grenades, right? Throw one, battle over. Use Rikku's First Strike ability.
For now you control Rikku. Those who played FF X will instantly recognise the Luca Docks. You start out at the first dock, battle your way through to the third dock, fight a few boss battles there and get a "Mission Complete!" screen. Oh wait, I forgot to explain missions, didn't I? Well, the storyline is progressed by doing missions, which involve almost anything, but they almost always consist of helping other people in some way.
Anyway, back on track. You're at the Luca docks, Goons and She-Goons will come out of nowhere(I'm serious, they just fade into view) and run towards you in real time and bumping into any of them triggers a battle from which you cannot escape. It's impossible, or at least insanely difficult not to get a few battles here and some EXP, but keep running to avoid them-Yuna joins you later and she'll get less EXP than Rikku and Paine. You don't want a gap between her and the other two in terms of level. As for the battles themselves, have Rikku attack the She-Goons and Paine attack the Goons, you'll get one-hit KOs(OHKOs). If facing a large group, have Rikku steal a Budget Grenade and Paine throw it.
On the second dock, there's someone dressed in a moogle suit crouching down in fear, find this person; stand next to them and press X for a full heal. This isn't optional, you get completion percentage for doing this, therefore you'll have to do it at least once. Oh, and if you enter the Main Menu at this time you'll have three selections, four if you're an NGP player. The three are "Items", "Accessories" and "Configuration". The fourth one for the NGP players is White Magic. Right now, the only thing you should be interested in is Config. It lets you decide whether to show the full Spherechange sequences, turn the vibration function on, etc, etc. Set what you want, but the subtitles are especially important. If you turn the subs off, you won't be able to skip dialogue during scenes even if you press the X button. Use this to your advantage. You still can skip scenes altogether, however, so be careful if you pause often and also have a toddler with you in the room.
[edit] Third Dock of Luca
When you get to the third dock, you'll see Paine standing there turning her head this way and that. The girls were chasing "????", I forgot to mention this earlier, but NVM, you already knew that. So, just run towards Paine and into a cutscene. Rikku will yell something about "????" running too fast, and then two weird idiots come into the scene. Their names are Logos and Ormi, in order of their appearance onscreen in this scene. Logos says that Rikku was too slow in response to her remark about "????". Hey, how much speed you want? She was running as fast as a Thief(Rikku's default Dressphere), is Berserker speed what you asking for? Then Ormi comes in and yells "Show's over". What show? These two don't even make any sense. Anyway, then Paine runs out towards the edge of the dock(um, it's a dead end there) and Logos and Ormi follow them, but they're distracted by someone shooting at their feet. Then the camera pans to the person holding the guns, who runs towards them, jumps off of Ormi's back, then:
Yuna! It's...good to see you. You're probably tired of hearing this, but you've really changed! Hard to recognise you, I wouldn't have known if it wasn't for your imposter... Ahem! Let's get back on track(how is it that she uses so many bullets, yet those two are still alive?), shall we? Now, where was I? Ah, yes...- HP: 86(both)
- MP: 18(both)
- Gil Stolen/Dropped: 200(Max)/60(both)
- Items Stolen/Dropped: Logos:(Normal & Rare) Silver Glasses|Ormi: (Normal & Rare) Iron Bangle/(Normal) Potion (Rare) Pheonix Down(both)
- EXP: 3 (both)
- AP: 1 (both)
- Difficulty: Normal:Easy/NGP: You don't deserve to live if you somehow manage to mess this up
Normal: Oh man, look at those accessories. You WANT them. Silver Glasses protect a character from the Darkness status ailment, and Iron Bangles raise your max HP by 20%. Steal with Rikku, then once you have got both items in your inventory, attack. I wouldn't suggest using Yuna's Trigger Happy move, it causes very little dmg, but I think it can be used to strengthen chain attacks. So just have Yuna attack or heal as needed. Focus your attacks on Logos first, then Ormi. Logos' attacks are fast and inflict minor dmg, but Ormi's are stronger and need more time to prepare. I've never seen him do it, but I've been told that Logos can heal himself and Ormi with Potions. You DO NOT want that to happen to you, since Potions mean a full heal for them. If you have, then a few Budget Grenades will do the job for you.
NGP: Steal the items to sell, pilfer the gil. Throw another Grenade. Battle over.
Yuna's imposter walks into the scene still dressed like Yuna. "Persistent, aren't you?" says she. Well, from what I gather, you stole Yuna's Garment Grid. Anyway, Yuna yells at her to give back the grid. "????" does so and trannsforms into a way sluttier outfit, by the way. Say what you want about Lady Luck, Thief, etc, etc, NOTHING beats that get-up in terms of sluttiness. And now you got a Boss Battle.
- HP: 130
- MP: 101
- Gil Stolen/Dropped: 500(I'm not giving you anymore reminders that this is the max)/180
- Items Stolen/Dropped:(Normal & Rare) Silver Bracer/(Normal) Hi-Potion (Rare) Pheonix Down
- EXP: 3
- AP: 2
- Difficulty : Normal: Easy/NGP: Practically impossible to lose, unless you are so screwed up that you actually attack yourself
Normal: When the battle starts, the game prompts you to press L1 and access the Garment Grid Yuna has currently equipped(the grid's name is First Steps, it's your default GG and any one GG can be equipped by the whole team at once, as well as the same DS). Do so(you can't select anything else anyway), and you'll find another DS connected to the one Yuna has currently equipped. Select it and watch the spherechange sequence from Gunner to Songstress. The sequence is pretty isn't it? You can turn it off in the Config menu. Once you're in Songstress, open the "Dance" menu and select "Darkness Dance". Now until Yuna's next turn Leblanc will suffer from Darkness, which causes a severe reduction in accuracy, so you shouldn't worry about her physical attacks. All you need to care about are her magic, since those still hit and hurt you. Since Paine and Rikku may also spherechange during this battle, turn Rikku into a Warrior, and have her and Paine chain physical attacks together. You may also want to turn Yuna into a Warrior after her first turn as a Songstress, or maybe right after she goes from Gunner to Songstress. The Warrior is the DS with the highest physical strength you can equip right now. But don't forget to steal! The Silver Bracer raises one character's MP by 40%.
NGP: You could go the cheap bombing way I've suggested for two whole boss battles now, or you could instead pick "Sleepy Shuffle" from the "Dances" menu and chain attacks together with the Warrior after stealing the Silver Bracer and pilfering the gil with a Thief. Since "Sleepy Shuffle" causes LeBlanc to fall asleep, she won't attack you at all. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.
So after you kick those bozos' asses, they run off and the game shows you how much EXP, Gil and items you got. I usually get so much EXP that all three girls level up once or twice. Then:
That's the real Yuna![edit] Chapter One: Airship Celsius
After that FMV I just showed you, a huge airship flies in as Yuna says how she felt a little frightened when she just started dancing uncontrollably. On board the Celsius, Brother's saying how he wants to see Yuna dancing. "It'll cost you." says our dear High Summoner. He actually falls for it. "She's kidding." says Paine. And then, of course, Brother yells about not getting to see Yuna dance. Well of course. I meant the Yuna-not-dancing part. Anyway, a kid who wears what looks like a gas mask(isn't it hot in there?) says that that uncontrollable dancing can happen when you use the Dressphere. Apparantly, the emotions of the person recorded in the sphere pass on to the user. I agree with Yunie, it CAN be dangerous. What if you were wearing a Dressphere that recorded a murderer?
Anyway, once the game returns control over Yuna to you on the airship(by the way, every single time you complete a mission, you'll get a scene of the Celsius before Yuna appears in the lift. You CANNOT skip these scenes, repetitive as they may be.), talk to everyone on the bridge. For the normal players as well as the NGP players who didn't get them, talking to Brother and Buddy, if I'm not wrong, nets you three or four Al Bhed Primers. Talk to Shinra(the kid with the gas mask), he's kinda like your cybersleuth. Can't believe I just used that word. So anyway, enter Shinra's tutorials. You'll find more than what I've told you. The GG tutorial is especially important as watching it gives you the Vanguard GG. You'll want to equip this with everyone in your party for the normal players since it automatically raises both your Defense and Magic Defense by 5. You'll find better GG as you play throughout the game, but this is a better option than First Steps right now. As for you lucky bastards NGP players, you just choose your own GG and DS for now, but I would recommend at least one Alchemist in the group, or three Mascots.
Oh, and before I forget:
Dressphere: Gunner
Gunner is Yuna's default Dressphere. It has high accuracy, but little else; it's Strength is rather low, so is MP and all other stats are around average to below average. HP too, is lacking. I wouldn't recommend trying to master this DS until a few others are done, and a few levels gained. However, on the upside, it has some of the most fun abilities ever! "Trigger Happy" at high levels can do a few thousand dmg if you have "Trigger Happy Lvl. 3" and are really fast, and don't even think of taking on certain bosses without "Potshot", "Cheapshot" and "Tableturner". What's better, the abilities themselves are no-wait, unlike most other jobs.
Dressphere: Thief
The person who had "Steal" and "Mug" on her section of the Sphere Grid in FF X has again chosen the Thief as her preferred default DS. Thieves are quick and light on their feet, along with a high evasion and fairly high HP. But of course, their real purpose is simply to steal items and pilfer gil. However, because of their high agility and evasion, their defense isn't very fun to look at. Their weapons are two chakra-like daggers that count as two attacks, so whenever a Thief attacks, it's a chain attack. This is really useful in the long run.
Dressphere: Warrior
Paine's default DS. It has high strength and Defense, but low Magic and Magic Defense. It's really only good for taking hits and attacking physically. Warriors also have Swordplay, and no, it doesn't consist of Tidus' Overdrives. Instead, it has all of Auron's stat-reducing moves, along with elemental sword attacks. The thing is, I've never found a fiend that wasn't immune to the stat-reducing attacks, and elemental spamming is easily done with a Black Mage and for less hurt to the MP. For now, it's valuable as a physical attacker, but later on when you find the Samurai and Dark Knight DS, you'll find this DS getting dustier and dustier as Samurai, then Dark Knight occupies it's nodes on your GG. But I still do enjoy seeing Yuna use Tidus' sword and battle stance.
Dressphere: Songstress
LeBlanc returns Yuna's GG with this DS on it. Most people find it useless and annoying, but I find it highly useful. A Songstress has high Agility when you get it, and a lot of it's dances are useful against many enemies. Cons are, all it's other stats are really low, except for MP and the Songstress cannot attack under normal circumstances-I mean if she's Berserked or if you equip her with a GG containing Mug or Nab Gil, she'll attack with her microphone, but you wouldn't want her to attack anyway, this DS's Strength is really low. Unfortunately, two of her dances can only be found late in the game, as they require the "Magical Dances" books to be learned. The dances are also two of the most useful in the game; "MP Mambo" and "Magical Masque". The first reduces the MP cost of the entire party to 0 and the other nullifies ALL magical attacks against the party. And that includes Ultima. That second ability will serve you well, no doubt about that.
So anyway, for the normal players, have your party consist of one Warrior, one Thief and one Songstress. Equip that Silver Bracer from LeBlanc on the Warrior, the Silver Glasses on the Thief and the Iron Bangle on the Songstress. Set the Songstress to learn "Samba of Silence", the Thief to learn "Pilfer Gil" and the Warrior to learn "Sentinal". After that, you can learn whatever you want with the Thief, but the Songstress should learn "Sleepy Shuffle" after that, and the Warrior should start on the elemental sword magic, leading up to "Excalibur". NGP players, if you have them, the Megiddo GG on Rikku with the Mascot DS, and the Treasure Hunt and Horn of Plenty GG also with the Mascot DS on the other two, it doesn't matter which, but in Mascot, Paine is your best physical attacker, while Rikku is for magical attacks. Yuna is for healing.
Also, talk to Shinra again after you're done with your battle setup and enter the "Treasure Spheres" section and watch the movie sphere entitled "Journey's Start". I can definitely see why Yuna's part of the Gullwings now. That guy really does look like him, doesn't it? Maybe we'll find out more later on...screw that, we are going to find out more about that guy later on.
When you've seen and heard all five scenes triggered by talking to everybody on the bridge, move towards the bottom of the screen into the hallway leading to the lift. You'll see a round glowing crystal ball next to the entrance. Stand next to it and press X to touch it. A little tutorial on Save Spheres will appear on the screen. A Save Sphere will heal you completely, that is to say, full HP and MP, and ALL status ailments are cured. They also return you to the airship(but this one ON the airship doesn't), and of course, are your save points throughout the game. Save, then proceed past the Sphere and into the lift. Select "Engine Room", and then move forward into it. You'll find four chests there; when opened(stand next to them and press the X button), they yield these items: 4 Phoenix Downs, an Ether, 3 Remedies and 4 Potions. These chests are refilled every chapter, as are most other chests in the game.
| Item | Cost |
| Potion | 50 gil |
| Phoenix Down | 100 gil |
| Antidote | 50 gil |
| Eye Drops | 50 gil |
| Echo Screen | 50 gil |
| Soft | 50 gil |
| Holy Water | 300 gil |
| Twist Headband | 3000 gil |
| White Cape | 3000 gil |
| Silver Glasses | 3000 gil |
| Star Pendant | 4000 gil |
Engine Room cleared, go down to the cabin and speak with the Hypello behind the counter. Everyone simply calls him "Barkeep", since they don't know his real name. Why didn't they ever ask? Anyway, Barkeep has an option to rest, and also runs the Gullstore. Just buy a few Potions and save the rest of your gil-not very much is needed right now. Prices and items are in the table on the left. NGP players, just sell the more useless accessories that you have. After that, select "Rest". You have to rest at least once every Chapter or you won't get to see certain scenes during Chapter 5. And you NEED the completion percentage they give you to get 100%, at least. If you don't want the Perfect Ending, then you don't need to do it.
So, once rested, head out into the hall. You should hear a message from Brother telling you to get to the bridge. Do so, but stop to save on the way.
