Welcome back, huskies. This is Part 16 of Apoqliphoth's walkthrough to the Final Fantasy VIII, and the first time I've done two sidequest sections back-to-back...unless you count the postgame marathon of Final Fantasy X. Hmm. Probably should have thought that one through a bit more.

We'll be dealing with the last of the current batch of sidequests here. One's obnoxious due to the back-and-forth aspects (also because the Shumi Tribe are dicks), the other involves Chocobos!

Shumi Village[]

Objective: Be a gopher, get rewarded for it..

Draw Points[]

Items[]

Shumi Village 2

Home of the most passive-aggressive little bastards in the world.

Head in, and talk to the Shumi by the draw point to the left. There's an Ultima Draw Point here, but it costs 5,000 Gil to use. Well, since we can make over 100,000 Gil in about 30 seconds, this is nothing. Plus, it refills pretty quickly.

Go north and down the lift. When you exit, head left until you reach the houses with the pond and frog nearby. The house on the right contains Timber Maniac 9. Also, talk to the Artisan a few times.

In the left house, examine the sculpture at the back. Apparently, it's of Laguna...hmm. Talk to the Sculptor, who fanboys over Moombas, and agree to speak to the Elder. After, raid the Firaga Draw Point should you need to.

Head right and into the house with the Moomba and Blizzaga Draw Point outside. The Elder wants to give you a gift, but you have to earn it. So it's work, then. We need to help the sculptor finish his statue.

Go back to the Sculptor's place and hear him out. He needs five stones: shadow, wind, life, water and blue. Talk to the Sculptor after getting each stone to trigger being able to find the next one.

  • Blue stone: Right next to you, on the left of the statue. Y'know, that blue...stone.
  • Wind stone: Rock to the left of the first building after the lift.
  • Life stone: To the right of the mayor's house; Squall will climb the roots to find it.
  • Shadow stone: Opposite the Ultima Draw Point at the top level, northeastern shadowy corner.
  • Not Water stone: By the frog in the pond.
  • Actual Water stone: In the Artisan's house in the northwest corner.

Once you've delivered the final stone to the Sculptor, go back to the Elder. He palms you off (literally), though as you leave you receive a Phoenix Pinion.

Shumi Village 8

Outside, have Squall explain what he thought of it. Leave Shumi Village to the World Map temporarily (but stock up on that Ultima watering hole), and re-enter. This next part is a back-and-forth talking marathon, so follow these steps of to whom you should talk:

  • Sculptor and Attendant
  • Elder
  • Moomba outside
  • Sculptor and Attendant
  • Elder
  • Attendant
  • Elder

Now leave Shumi Village and head south to FH. Go to the area where you fought the robot and enter the Grease Monkey's house. Talk to him to receive the Moomba Doll. Return to Shumi Village and enter the Artisan's house, where the Moomba Doll will start recording his messages.

Outside, the Master Fisherman will show up (if you did his quest). Head back to the Elder's house to receive your rewards, a Status Guard. This teaches a GF learn ST-Defx4, which lets the equipped character junction 4 status spells against which to defend.

We can finally get out of this place.

From Shumi Village on the World Map, head to the nearby forest.

Chocobo's Forests[]

Objective: Hunt down baby Chocobos to lure out the adults. Try not to lose mind..

The Beginner's Forest[]

Items[]

Chocobo Forest VIII 1

Squall will dismiss the other two party members as to avoid scaring away the Chocobos. Talk to the kid, Chocoboy, who charges you 1,000 Gil for his lecture on how to find them.

Basically, you have use to the ChocoSonar to locate Chicobos, and the ChocoZiner to make them appear. You have to make it so that only one Chicobo is remaining, and then 'talk' to it to make an adult Chocobo appear. You can then use the ChocoZiner to lead the Chocobo around to dig up treasure.

Using the Sonar, stand northeast of Chocoboy and when the meter has a high reading, switch to the Ziner and use it to make one Chicobo appear. Talk to it and POW; a Chocobo. Lead it the northeast area, sort of diagonally between the two trees. It'll dig up an Aura Stone. Talk to your new bird companion and choose to ride it outta there.

Chocoboy gives you a tutorial on the Chocobo World minigame (which is irrelevant without either the PC version or a Japan-only peripheral, grr), and lets you name it. You're then on the World Map, with the best fucking Chocobo theme in the entire series.

Head south, through the shallows to the Trabia Continent. The next forest is on Sorbald Plains, at the northwestern side of Trabia.

Basics Snowfield[]

Items[]

Chocobo Forest VIII 2

Decline Chocoboy's advice; we know what we're doing. Use the Sonar to detect south of the 'central' tree. Use the Ziner in the middle of the snowfield, and three Chicobos will descend. Use the Ziner again 'on top of' either of the two lower Chicobos to leave one remaining.

One you've summoned the Chocobo, Ziner to the left to find a Flare Stone.

Now leave this forest and head east, across the brown plains.

The Chocobo Forest is north of what looks like, and in fact is, Trabia Garden.

Roaming Forest[]

Items[]

Chocobo Forest VIII 3

To solve this forest, use the Ziner just to the right of Chocoboy. Then use it again on the middle Chicobo.

Next, head right to the entrance and Sonar to find the Chicobo. Now go back and use the Ziner on the Chicobo to the right of Chocoboy, and talk to the remaining Chicobo by the entrance.

Lead the Chocobo north of where the Chicobo next to Chocoboy was to find a Shell Stone and a Holy Stone.

Now take Balamb Garden to the Centra Continent, where we got the Tonberry GF. On the northeastern tip of the continent, there's a mountain range with its 'back' to you. Land the Garden and walk around the mountains to find the Forest.

Forest of Solitude[]

Items[]

Chocobo Forest VIII 6

This one's a pain in the arse; you have to be standing in the exact spot, almost pixel-perfect. You have to be standing just enough left of Chocoboy that your arms overlap. Then inch north until Squall's foot pixels are just above the pixels of Chocobo's cuff. It's that precise.

After summoning the Chocobo, you need to get Chocoboy to move. He's standing on top of the treasure spot, the git. Challenge him to cards, then have him move. Dig where he was standing to receive a Protect Stone and a Meteor Stone.

Let's get out of this bloody forest.

Head south and across the shallows to the southwestern side of the Centra Continent. The forest is near a beach, on the actual southernmost landmass on the World Map.

Forest of Fun[]

Items[]

Chocobo Forest VIII 7

The first Chicobo can found found to the southeast (more east) of Chocoboy. Three of them will drop down.

Now use the Ziner to the right of Chocoboy, which is just northwest of the lowest Chicobo. Another will drop down.

Now head between the two Chicobos at the back and Sonar to find the right spot. all but one will disappear.

Guide the Chocobo to the nearest corner to find a Meteor Stone, a Flare Stone and an Ultima Stone. Whoa.

To find the sixth Chocobo Forest, head east until you find the crack in the mountains through which we went earlier to find the desert. Turn right and onto the curved peninsula. There's a couple of large forests, as well as the Enclosed Forest.

The Enclosed Forest[]

Items[]

Chocobo Forest VIII 5

Start by heading north of Chocoboy. To the left of the tree trunk is your first point of call. Two Chicobos will drop.

The next spot is practically on top of Chocoboy, slightly to the northeast. One Chicobo will disappear, and another will drop.

Now head right and up against the rock. Check the location with the Sonar, then Ziner. A third Chicobo will descend. Now head almost due north. The correct spot is east and slightly north of the current northernmost Chicobo. A fourth one will appear.

Now head southwest, until you're pretty much due east of the Chicobo north of Chocoboy. Use the Ziner and all but one will disappear. Then that one disappears, but don't worry; a final Chicobo will emerge. Phew.

The treasure is in the northeast corner. You receive a Meteor Stone, a Holy Stone and an Ultima Stone.

Now for the final forest. Go to the forest north of Trabia Garden, and head southeast into the shallows with the branching coastline nearby. Go south through the shallows to find an island covered almost entirely in forest.

From the beach on this island, head through the thin path between cliffs. From there, head northwest. If you can see the ocean, turn to face east and you should see the forest.

The Chocobo Sanctuary[]

Items[]

  • Chicobo Card
Chocobo Forest VIII 4

Finally.

Approach the Chocobos. They'll dance for you (a nod to Final Fantasy VII). Approach the Chicobo to receive your reward, the Chicobo Card. Yup. That's it.

Although the magic stones were a nice reward. If you talk to the Chicobo again, it'll 'sell' you a Gysahl Greens for 600 Gil. Take the Chocobo back to Balamb Garden (sadly you can't keep it there).

There's one final sidequest to complete before moving on with the story. Take Balamb Garden south to Winhill. Make sure you have Irvine or Quistis in your party for this quest.

Winhill[]

Items[]

Draw Points[]

Vase sidequest first piece

Head up the road and into the mansion at the back of town. Talk to the guy on the stairs, then examine the suit of armour. A Chicobo will appear from the armour, revealing a Vase Piece.

Next up, enter Raine's house. Upstairs, talk to the woman (who isn't Raine) and head downstairs. Examine the flowers on the bottom right table, then talk to the woman behind the bar, followed by the cat for the Vase Piece.

Head south from this area and enter the house on the left with the flowers outside. Examine the yellow/white flowers inside to find the third Vase Piece.

Vase sidequest third piece

Good prize, bad karma.

Go south to the Chocobo crossing. This bit is so mean ;-;

You have to kick the Chicobo up into the air three times. Well, only once to get the Vase Piece, but it also drops a Gysahl Greens and a Phoenix Pinion. Too mean. Keep doing it and an adult Chocobo will kick you into the air ;P

Take the four pieces back to the mansion owner to receive your reward, a Holy Stone.

And we are finally done with the available sidequests for now. And on that note, I'm going for a snack. Quel surprise.
