As I write this, I'm watching the BBC Proms, where the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is playing Beethoven's Triple Concerto. And it's beautiful. So with such a powerful background music, it's on with the show, and on with the game.

It's time for Part 18. Is that significant? I doubt it.

Pagoda

Looks pretty nice. Shame we have to murder one of its inhabitants.

You'll find Yuffie as soon as you enter town. She'll run away, naturally. After her! Cross over the bridges to the building with the large pot outside. Read the flyer -- so this is Turtle's Paradise, huh? You'd think a secluded ninja village would be less...commercial.

Inside are the Turks, who would rather not fight and ruin their vacation with unnecessary fighting. Eh, fair enough. Leave Turtle's Paradise and cross the bridge. Inside the building ahead, open the chest for an MP Absorb Materia...which is immediately stolen by Yuffie. Could you not. Also, talk to the other customer, who says something utterly nonsensical.

Let's go and find her. In the very first house, check the folding screen. You found a Yuffie! Hello there. She runs off...

Why is the pot outside Turtle's Paradise wiggling? Punch it a few times with whatever your confirm button is and out she pops. Your other party members corner her, and she leads you off. Meanwhile, Shinra soldiers inform the Turks that 'he' is here on vacation as well. But who? We'll find out...

Back at Yuffie's house, she delivers her speech about why she stole the Materia. Cloud doesn't care, though -- he just wants it back. Flip either switch and...AND THEN THE CAGE COMES DOWN :@

Urge to kill rising. Free your teammates. Check the banner outside the room to find the last Turtle's Paradise Flyer. Thank god that's over with.

Now it's time to head to the next area. It's in the northwest of town. Save up and have a visit.

Wall VII 06

All we need now is a sudden breeze.

Here, enter the house on the right. The room on the left is a free inn, and you can check the poster on the wall to find a secret passage (In a ninja village? Surely not!) to find a Magic Shuriken. Not sure what good that'll be after we've finished with that smirking freak.

On the right side of the house, you can find an obvious hidden path leading to a Hairpin. The north room contains Godo-kunshu, who doesn't seem in a particularly ruler-y mood right now. Leave the house and pack to the plaza.

On your left is a dais with a hard-to-see bell. Ring it (it's at the front) to reveal a secret door. Inside, it seems Yuffie's been captured (hah!) by a goon. A goon of...Don Corneo?! What's that kerb-crawler doing here?

He's also kidnapped Elena of the Turks. After the scene, grab the Elixir and Swift Bolt from the chests. Follow him upstairs and Shinra Troops will arrive to capture Corneo. Yay! But he darts aside and they moronically attack us instead. Boo.

Outside, talk to Rude and Reno. Corneo's taken Elena and, more importantly, Yuffie to the place that stands out the most. No, not that huge Pagoda in the background, I know you were thinking it.

Head back to town and northeast past the Save Point.

Da-chao Statue[]

Enemies[]

Items[]

Da Choa

It's very hard to get your right arm into that position. Trust me; I tried D:

Head up and go left to find Rude. Talk to him and head right. Turn at the split, head right and talk to Reno. Head left and talk to Rude outside the cave. Inside, grab the Dragoon Lance. Talk to Rude again and he leaves.

Author's Note #20: Cloud mentions that the flames would turn the party into 'crispy critters'. This is actually a slang term used by doctors (with a dark sense of humour) to describe serious burn patients. There's actually a load of humourous medical nicknames and abbreviations you can look up, if you're into that sort of thing ;P

Take a quick detour north and talk to Reno again. Before heading south, make sure every character has a full limit gauge. Being in Sadness status might help, too. Now head south. You'll find that Corneo has (somehow, in the last minute or so since we walked past the statue) strung up Elena and Yuffie over the Da-chao Statue's eyes. You've got some baaaad karma headed your way, pal.

He complains that you took out his pet, Aps, so he brought his new pet to play with us.

Boss Battle: Rapps
RappsFFVII

Level: 39
HP: 6,000
EXP: 3,200
AP: 33
Gil: 20,000
Weakness: -
Resistance: -
Immunity: -
Absorbs: -
Steal: Nothing
Drops: Peace Ring
Difficulty: Hard

Attacks:

  • Wing Cut
  • Scorpion's Tail
  • Aero3

If you're unprepared, Rapps will shred you. As much of a joke as Don Corneo is, this thing doesn't fuck about. Aero3 will devastate one party member with about 1,500+ damage. Its physicals aren't so bad, but Scorpion Tail has a 50% chance of poisoning the target, so that's no fun.

If you have any Right Arm items, you can fuzz them at him for decent damage. Otherwise, unload those Limit Breaks I advised you to store up. With enough Strength, Meteorain may just OHKO him. I managed to do it with Tifa's six-hit Break, with each hit dealing around 1,100 damage. Then again, I'd done a bit of levelling beforehand.

Corneo has one final trick up his sleeve -- turning Yuffie and Elena upside-down. If he lets them fall, they'll become 'squashed tomatoes'. Any chance there are two separate buttons...?

Author's Note #21: I'm not sure what good turning them upside-down would do; I'm fairly sure a fall from up there would be fatal regardless...

Corneo thinks he's won, but the Turks show up to prove him wrong. They pull a parody of his own multiple-choice quiz, before letting him fall to his tomato-coloured doom.

Their other mission is to find Cloud -- but funnily enough, they just can't seem to find him. Ah well.

Back in Wutai, Yuffie returns your Materia. In completely the wrong order. Remember when I said to write down your Materia setup? This is why. She gives you the MP Absorb Materia that she nabbed earlier as a consolation prize.

You end up on the World Map, but we've still got some stuff to do in Wutai.

Enter the house to the north of the entrance, below Yuffie's house. Looks like the house of a crazy cat lady. You can now access the staircase (press confirm to climbs them) which leads to a chest containing a HP Absorb Materia.

Head to Turtle's Paradise. Assuming you've read every flyer (including the one outside the place), you'll receive a Power Source, a Guard Source, a Magic Source, a Mind Source, a Speed Source, a Luck Source and a Megalixir. Whoa.

Go northwest to the pagoda area. We can now take on the Pagoda Challenge. Equip Yuffie with her best equipment, as well as Poison, Gravity and Restore Materia, and an Enemy Skill Materia loaded with L4 Suicide.

Enter and talk to the guy sitting on the floor. Accept the challenge for your first battle, Gorkii the Strength.

Boss Battle: Gorkii
Valron-ffvii-flying

Level: 30
HP: 3,000
EXP: 1,500
AP: 50
Gil: 0
Weakness: Wind
Resistance: -
Immunity: Earth, Gravity
Absorbs: -
Steal: Nothing
Drops: X-Potion
Difficulty: Simple

Attacks:

  • Dive Kick
  • Demi2
  • Barrier
  • Reflect
  • Regen

It actually starts as a pseudo-back-attack, in that your first hit deals double damage and his ATB Gauge starts out empty, so that's one advantage. The other is that his main attack is pretty weak and his only other damaging move deals Gravity (i.e. non-fatal) damage.

A single Limit Break should kill him, though it's not required.

On the next floor, challenge the little kid, Shake the Speed, to a fight.

Boss Battle: Shake
Skeeskee FF7

Level: 32
HP: 4,000
EXP: 2,200
AP: 50
Gil: 0
Weakness: -
Resistance: -
Immunity: Gravity
Absorbs: -
Steal: Nothing
Drops: Turbo Ether
Difficulty: Easy

Attacks:

  • Beak
  • Rage Bomber

The worst Rage Bomber does is around 600 damage and causing Fury, which may make your attacks miss. I just used Quake3 over and over until she keeled over. It's not a difficult fight. Again, just fight as you normally would but make sure you have access to healing, just in case.

Fun fact: At Level 32, L4 Suicide will wreck face here.

Next up, Chekhov the Magic.

Boss Battle: Chekhov
Twin Brain FF7

Level: 34
HP: 5,000
EXP: 2,900
AP: 50
Gil: 0
Weakness: -
Resistance: -
Immunity: Gravity
Absorbs: -
Steal: Nothing
Drops: Ice Ring
Difficulty: Simple

Attacks:

  • Absorb
  • Stare Down

Absorb hits for about 300 damage, and heals her for the same. Stare Down just stuns you for a few seconds. She doesn't even have any magic attacks, so Godo knows why she considers her battle form to be a 'Magic Change'.

Afterwards, head upstairs to take on Staniv.

Boss Battle: Staniv
Screamer FF7

Level: 36
HP: 6,000
EXP: 3,600
AP: 50
Gil: 0
Weakness: -
Resistance: -
Immunity: Gravity
Absorbs: -
Steal: Nothing
Drops: Elixir
Difficulty: Easy

Attacks:

  • Ironball
  • Iron Attack
  • War Cry

Slightly more powerful, but that 36 is a curse. Throw out L4 Suicide to reduce him to a lemon, then just poke him in the face and he'll die.

If you don't have L4 Suicide, heal frequently and take the punishment until you get your Limit Break. 2-3 Limit Breaks should see him fall within killing range, then let him put you in Limit Break and finish him with Magic.

Protip: Let him inflict you with Sadness; the reduced damage you take will come in handy for the final fight.

After Staniv's defeat, the three previous opponents will appear and tell you that you now have to face 'HIM'.

NOTE: If you fight this battle before getting all four Enemy Skill Materia, you will permanently miss having Trine on all four copies. Trine is only available from Materia Keeper, the next fight, and an enemy in an unrevisitable location.

Head upstairs to find out who 'HE' is.

Who is it? It's Godo Kisaragi, Yuffie's father.

Boss Battle: Godo
GodoFFVII

Level: 41
HP: 10,000
EXP: 5,000
AP: 60
Gil: 40,000
Weakness: -
Resistance: -
Immunity: -
Absorbs: -
Steal: Nothing
Drops: All Creation
Difficulty: Hard

Attacks:

  • Cure21
  • Sleepel1
  • Mini1
  • Beast Sword2
  • Trine24
  • Drain3
  • Bio23
  • Demi33

1Golden Mask
2Red Mask
3White Mask
4Enemy Skill

Make sure you poison him at the start of battle, then switch to self-healing. When you get a free shot, throw Demi spells at him. Beast Sword isn't too much of a problem if you're in Sadness status, dealing 150-200 damage. Trine is the main problem, dealing upwards of 600 damage.

You should have Yuffie's Doom of the Living by now, which will do serious damage, and may KO Godo on top of the poison and the Demi spells.

If he starts healing himself for more than you can damage him, use Reflect or a Mirror on him.

GodoKisaragi

Dem eyebrows tho.

And Godo is down. Yuffie and Godo-tousan have an argument over him turning Wutai into a tourist trap as a result of losing the war (that apparently happened). Godo's subordinates question her, but he shuts them up and hands over the Leviathan Materia. Which is like Wutai's sacred entity or something. Sweet.

As the party leaves, he asks Yuffie if the gang is likely to want to keep their Materia after their adventure is completed...dammit Godo, she was bad enough beforehand.

And with that, we're done here. For now. Save up and leave Wutai. That was a long one, wasn't it? Two quests in one. Ah well, we can we get back on with the story now. Well, sort of. There's still some enemy skills to learn, not to mention Cloud's ultimate Limit Break...

Enemy Skills[]

Death Force[]

Around the beaches, you'll find giant tortoises, Adamantaimai. Manipulate them into using Death Force against your learners, which protects them from instant death effects, but only one character can be protected per caster. So if Cloud uses Death Force on Aeris, then on Tifa, Aeris will lose Death protection and Tifa will gain it instead.

Magic Hammer[]

In the grassy area can be found Razor Weed. Though it's an offensive move, they still have to be 'convinced' (read: manipulated) into using it. It acts like an 100 MP Osmose spell, which is pretty cool for self-sustaining mages.

Whether you're going for Cloud's ultimate attack or progressing with the story, our next stop is the Gold Saucer. Sail east from Wutai, through the river. On the other side, land on the Gold Saucer side and walk to North Corel. You know the way. See you there -- I'll be the one riding the Ferris Wheel with Tifa.
