Walkthrough:Final Fantasy IX/BlueHighwind

From Final Fantasy Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Hello Space Monkies!! Its it I, BlueHighwind, bringing you yet another walkthrough. If you've read my Final Fantasy VII/Walkthrough you should already know what to expect, but since I never overestimate the intelligence of my audience I'll tell you again.

The last time I was on a mission from God, but this time it’s just out of frustration for how long the walkthroughs are taking to be finished. This walkthrough once had a twin walkthrough being written by Mymindislost, who originally took the page name "Final Fantasy IX/Walkthrough", so for awhile I had to add in an annoying "/BH" to my page names. But MMIL has since given up on her quest, so now then this walkthrough became the official one. But then we changed the walkthrough format twice to the current titles, so there are no official ones anymore. Yet it remains the only FFIX Walkthrough for some reason. Even if it had competition it would still be the best.

Final Fantasy IX is the third Final Fantasy to appear in 3D and by this point the sprites look much better than the block Lego guys from Final Fantasy VII. IX is perhaps the most underrated game in the whole franchise. Similar to Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker, far too many misguided and far too shallow individuals have put this game down because the art is too "cartoony". Don't listen to these guys - they are idiots. Judging a game by its art style is the worst thing you can do when choosing a game, well after buying just because the movie kicked ass. What they don't know is that FFIX is one of the best in the whole series. Its battle system is my personal favorite out of them all and its storyline is excellent. Only in Final Fantasy II do more cities get destroyed.

I am not concerned with such trivial matters such as spelling or grammar, so if it really bothers you edit to your heart's desire but do not change the fundamental idea of what I have said, for it is sacred text. If you do not like foul language than you better get the fuck used to it, because I enjoy cursing.

Throughout this work you often hear me complain about the many faults of this game. Please do not misunderstand. I jest because I love. This is the second best Final Fantasy game out there (VII currently holds that title) but that doesn't mean I should blind myself to its cute quirks or plot holes. This was written with a smile on my face, not a bitter frown of disgust.

Actually upon rereading this whole work I have to say that this is my finest walkthrough yet, much better than the crude and lazy work I put in my FFVII walkthrough. Its already my favorite walkthrough ever.

[edit] How to Play Final Fantasy IX

Before you even think of playing Final Fantasy IX, there are some minor physical limitations. First of all you need at least one working human hand, the ability to take visible Electromagnetic Radiation through organs called 'eyes' in a process called 'seeing', and a central nervous system to take in this information and interpret it in a meaningful way. Hearing is optional, but the game is much better if you can actually listen to the brilliant score. Plus you're going to have to know how to read. (If you can't read, then how the hell are you even understanding this?).

Now for the technological limitations. You're going to need a power source, preferably electrical to drive the machinery you are going to need in order to play this game. First you are going to need a TV made sometime in the Nineties or later, hopefully its in color. Second you're going to need one of the three models of the PlayStation Line. Finally you're going to need a copy of the four discs of the actual game. Which can be procured in your local video game retailer's Bargain Bin. Or much more easily on EBay.

Insert the first disc (its labeled DISC 1) into the disc tray. If you cannot perform this simple task than you either lack the physical ability to play this game (if that's the case then I feel for you man, life really dumped a lot of shit on you) or are just a complete fucking retard, in which case you get no sympathy from me. Seriously if you can't do than even that, then you've shown a greater degree of stupidity, and incompetence than an Italian Tank Division charge. Congratulations!

[edit] Basic Controls

If you've ever played a Final Fantasy and have even the slightest amount of intelligence you can skip this section and the next. If you're a total idiot who cannot grasp even the slightest concepts (I know at least one is reading this), feel free to read to your heart's content.

Unlike Final Fantasy VII, the game uses the American scheme of buttons. The Image:X-button.png button is the select button, and the Image:Circle-button.png button is the cancel. The Image:Triangle-button.png is the menu button, and the Image:Square-button.png doesn't seem to have any function useless specifically mentioned in a mini-game.

[edit] Battle System

This game uses the Active Time battle system so you cannot just leave to game mid-battle because your enemies will still move even if you don't. Other than that this is more or less a traditional turn-based RPG - allies and enemies both have HP (heath points) which if totally depleted will cause that character to die, enemies are dead forever, but your allies can easily be revived. They also have MP (magic points) which gives your character the ability to use magic, when depleted that character can no longer cast spells. If you've played an earlier Final Fantasy on an PlayStation system, than you'll notice that in this game you now have four characters to control, other than the more modern three. And they call it progress.

Final Fantasy IX has, in my opinion, the best battle system out of the whole series. All of your characters have set classes with their own respective abilities and weapons. Black Mages are weak attackers, but can cast powerful spells, while Knights can't cast any spells but are excellent physical fighters. Each character has his or her own character class, which you can't change. But that's fine!

Characters gain experience and grow more powerful by killing enemies like all the good Final Fantasies. But there is a twist. Similar to the Materia and Esper system from VII and VI, once a character equips armor or weapons they learn specific skills. These skills are permanent, but that will never be a problem. Each class learns certain abilities from the items they have equipped. You can equip and unequip the abilities you've learned, which you will have to do because there's a limit to the number of abilities you can have at time. It adds a bit of customization to what would otherwise have been a totally closed system.

The biggest change from the last games is in the Limit Breaks. They are no longer called Limits but instead called Trances. Trances beef up the abilities of your characters for a set time and often give them new ones. Each character has their own original trances. Often a Trance will be the difference between life and death. And unlike VII or VIII or X or XII these Trances actually effect the storyline.

Okay enough of the boring technical stuff.
