[edit] Western Keep
By now you should know where this place is. Save your game before entering. Give that Crown to the King guy inside. And then it turns out that the King is in fact that Astos dude in disguise. Who didn't see that a mile away? I have no idea why he decided to attack us, since we just gave him what he needed to conquer Elfheim (which bears the question of how does a crown help you conquer anything?). But I guess he has a death wish, so lets grant it.

Strategy: This is the very first true boss in the whole game. Garland and those pathetic Pirates were just warmups. But even so, I'm starting to worry if this game will ever have any challenge. Astos's worst attack is potentially "Death", which might kill off one of your characters in one move. But I've never seen it connect so you have little to worry about. His physical attack is no joke, nor is his "Fira". But with basic tactics the Dark Elf should go down. | |||||||||||||||||
Somewhere Ganondorf is laughing. That Astos was a disgrace to evil elves. Astos though slightly more difficult was still pretty much a pushover. When are the hard bosses going to appear? Grab the Crystal Eye and return to Elfheim.
[edit] The Magic Key Unlocks
Heal at the inn as always, and be sure to finish your magic shopping. You should be once again swimming in Gil so be sure to go to the level 4 Magic Shops. For your Black Mage buy "Blizzara" to finish your second level elemental spell collection, and "Haste". "Haste" - though actually a White Magic spell but oddly miscategorized in this game, is a truly fucking awesome spell that boosts the speed of the anyone hit with it. So they can attack faster and in my experience stronger. Don't worry White Mage, I haven't forgotten about you. Buy only "Nulfrost" for her. "Vox" and "Poisona" both heal Silence and Poison respectively but the cost is far too high, with each being 2500 Gil. You can buy fifty Antidotes for that much Gil, and you certainly won't need any more than that throughout the entire game.
Now go back on your boat and sail to Cornelia. Then march up to Matoya's Cave. Inside give her that Crystal Eye that you pried from Astos's cold dead hands. In gratitude Grandma Witch gives you the Jolt Tonic. Never once does Matoya even consider the possibility that we might have stolen it ourselves and are just returning it for a reward.
Now sail back to Elfheim and march up to the castle. Give Prince his medicine and the little monarch will reward you with a Magic Key. What's this bullshit? We just saved your life and defeated your main enemy and all you're giving us is a rusty old key? Why do the rewards in this game always suck? But don't fret Space Monkies, that key is actually extremely useful as I'll outline below.
First leave the castle and hug the walls, don't go a step further than just next to the wall or your characters will leave the castle. At the end is a small room containing the treasures of the Elfhiem Kingdom, let's partake. There are four treasure chests containing a Mythril Hammer, 800 Gil, 700 Gil, and Bronze Gloves. Not that great but it's only a start. Now return to Marsh Cave and go down to the lowest level (the one with the nice little 4x4 room pattern). Go into those three rooms that used to be locked and relieve them of their goodies, which include an Antidote, 1020 Gil, and a Silver Armlet. Now go to the Western Keep and go all the way around Astos's room to find a new treasure room. In this room you'll find Steel Gloves, a Power Staff, and the Falchion.
Now sail back to Castle Cornelia and get some revenge for their crappy reward. Go all the way to the back of the palace and go down to find two little store rooms. Inside you'll find a Cottage, a Saber, a Mythril Knife, Iron Armor, a Tent, and some extra spicy Nitro Powder. That stuff is key if we ever want to leave this overgrown lake that they call the Aldean. Go back to Garland's lair and check those two Eastern Rooms that were locked off before. In the Southern room you'll find a Rune Blade. In the Northern room you'll find a Werebuster and a Gold Needle.
With that we have now grabbed every bit of treasure on the Aldean. Lets get out of here and into the wider world of Final Fantasy I.
[edit] Dwarves' Cave
Go back to your boat and sail directly West from the tip of Cornelia's area. From here head North past the ismus until you find some new docks. From here go around that patch of mountains and South until you find a cave.
Welcome to Dwarven homeland, home to all the little midget workers. Ignore all of them for NPCs never have anything interesting to say and go all the way down into a large treasure room. In here you'll find a rather nice bunch of items including: a Tent, a Great Helm, a Wyrmkiller (poor wyrms), an Ether, a Potion, Mythril Mail, 575 Gil, and a Cottage. See crime does pay.
Now go to the Southeast corner of the room and talk to the Dwarf (err little person), who will get all excited over the large amounts of explosives you've brought. He then uses it to blow up the bottom of the cave. For some odd reason this action somehow digs a channel through that isthmus we saw earlier. Now thanks to a tiny pick of nitro, the Aldean is open to world trade. This will probably have massive effects on world trade and globalization. Perhaps there are even real countries out there instead of these baby villages that call themselves kingdoms.
I'll ruin the suspense there aren't any.
[edit] A Geography Lesson
I don't feel like starting Melmond on this page so I'll waste time with this rather pointless section.
Welcome to the open waters of ocean. Somehow your tiny little pirate ship is capable of handling these much stronger ocean currents, and withstanding the harsh sea storms.
If you got a hankerin' for exploring then you'll learn much about the world around you. This planet contains three continents. First is the Southern, which is little more than a ring of land around the Aldean and a massive swath of mountains to the East. The Southern is also the largest continent. Then there are two smaller continents in the Northern Hemisphere. The Western is the smallest continent and is mostly mountains. The Eastern contains a large desert and two long arm-like peninsulas pointing Northwest and Southeast respectively.
Unfortunately neither the Western or Eastern continents hold any docks of any kind. There is nothing we can do on either continent. So going West from our newly dug canal you'll find a long island. Follow it to find the next set of docks. Leave your ship bobbin in the waters and head to our next town, the rotting land of Melmond.
