Afternoon! Today can't decide whether it wants to be sunny and overcast. It doesn't particularly bother me as I have a day of writing, exercise and studying Chinese. It's a tough life balancing aesthetics and intellect.

I think I'm on a learning high after watching Only Connect and getting most of the answers within a fraction of a second.

So, here it is -- Part 20 of Apoqliphoth's walkthrough to Final Fantasy! Let's do it.

Chronodia[]

FFI PSP Labyrinth of Time

The hooded figure will reveal themself as Chronodia, the passage of time incarnate. It's time for the true superboss of Final Fantasy I!

...but wait! Chronodia has eight different forms, depending on the path you took to reach the bottom. Specifically, how many and in which challenges you unlocked a Blue Seal (i.e. passed the trial).

This means that in order to complete the bestiary...you have to complete the Labyrinth of Time eight times, fighting all eight incarnations of Chronodia. Jesus.

Failing all eight trials will pit you against Chronodia's weakest form -- the more trials you pass, the stronger she becomes.

I'm not going to do a regular boss box because she's, well, irregular.

Forms[]

Note that B represents a Blue Seal ('passed floor') and R represents a Red Seal ('failed floor').

Strategy[]

  • Physical Attack: Extremely powerful, often breaking the 999 HP cap. Stacking Invisira and Protera is essential to avoid being OHKO'd by it.
  • Seal: Used every fifth turn to impose a four-turn embargo on a particular battle command -- either Fight, Magic or Item.
  • Slow: Affects the entire party.
  • Stop: Affects the entire party.
  • Ink: Afflicts the entire party with Blind.
  • Kill: Inflicts Instant Death on a character with <300 HP.
  • Warp: KOs the entire party. Can be resisted with Magic Defence.
  • Haste: Increases Chronodia's number of attacks (basically attack power).
  • Firaga
  • Thundaga
  • Blizzaga
  • Thunderbolt
  • Ice Storm
  • Poison Gas
  • Comet
  • Flare

Spell Cycle:
Blizzaga → Flare → Firaga → Thundaga → Stop → Haste → Warp → Slow
Skill Cycle:
Ink → Thunderbolt → Poison Gas → Icestorm

Start by buffing everyone with multiple castings of Invisira, Protera and by throwing Light Curtains to get NulAll on the whole party. From there, go on the passive-aggressive. Heal as much as possible while buffing your fighters by stacking Temper, Saber and Strength Tonics, as well as the mandatory one-off Haste.

With adequate protection, only her physical attack can be considered dangerous as her party-wide attacks can be reduce to around 100-200 damage. With enough power buffs, your melee characters can be dealing 3,000+ damage per hit, which will bring her down quickly.

Note that because Seal is used every five turns and wears off after four, the turn in which you are no longer sealed heralds her next-turn usage of Seal again, which is effectively a free turn as it does no damage. Use this time to pile heal your party and ready yourself for the next four turns of somewhat restricted onslaught, depending on what gets sealed.

If she seals Fight, stack buff items and heal conservatively. If Magic is sealed, use healing items like Megalixirs and the Rune Staff. If Item is sealed, proceed as you normally would.

Upon defeating Chronodia, your total time taken in the dungeon, as well as the number of battles won is shown, and you are presented with a title. You can then replay any of the 30 completed stages from the Extras menu on the Title Screen.

And that, my friends, is it! You've completed everything the game has to offer. I hope you've had fun reading this walkthrough -- as always, I've had fun writing it and I hope you'll think to use another of my walkthroughs in the future.

But for now, it's goodbye. Goodbye!

~ Alex
