Utsusemi: Ichi (空蝉の術:壱, Utsusemi no Jutsu: Ichi?) is a Ninjutsu spell in Final Fantasy XI.

It creates 3 Copy Images that absorb attacks directed at the caster, causing them to miss completely. Utsusemi status guarantees that each copy image will cause a single physical hit to miss (with some exceptions for certain enemy special abilities, like Spiral Spin, which ignore shadows without erasing them), and Utsusemi also protects from single-target magic spells and attacks, causing them to miss, with some exceptions for special abilities, like for Ifrit's Meteor Strike. Utsusemi status will be instantly erased by -ga spells, such as Firaga and Sleepga.

The Utsusemi spells are one of the two main lures that cause many jobs to use Ninja one of the most popular subjobs. The other is Dual Wield; however, as of June 2010, Dancer will also give Dual Wield as a subjob, albeit at a higher level. Still, Ninja is a very popular subjob, because Utsusemi is so useful that even jobs that prefer to wield two-handed weapons rather than two single-hand weapons, like Samurai and Dragoon, use /Ninja to avoid enemy attacks.

Etymology[]

Utsusemi (空蝉?) is Japanese for "cast-off cicada shell".
