Final Fantasy is my favourite series, and now, inspired by Warmech's "Best and Worst of Final Fantasy", I will begin with the explanation:
- These reviews are based on my opinion on Final Fantasy, taking the whole list of games I tried as reference.
- There are two sections for each parameter, best and worst. Also, there is no difference between 2nd and 3rd place: I just didn't know what to call them.
- There will be no such parameter as "Best/Worst Final Fantasy Game" or "Best/Worst Track" so quit dreaming.
- There is no real end for this. I'll just add sections as I feel to.
Off we go:
[edit] Real Stuff
[edit] Logos
| Best Logo | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions | Final Fantasy IV | Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings |
| This Logo is just beautiful. The White Mage, the Dragoon, the Black Mage, the Onion Knight...You won't find a Logo that can define a Final Fantasy better than this one. If there is one good thing that the remake brought to the game it was this. | What can I say? Golbez is badass and FFIV DS is just awesome. This can't stand to FFT:TwoL's Logo though... | Revenant Wings is a great game, and the logo shows it. The Galbana/Beirouge is the most iconic thing in the game and these colours are just beautiful to the eye. |
| Worst Logo | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII | Final Fantasy XII International | Fabula Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy XIII |
| Lame and cheap. Easily the worst logo that can be found in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. | Even cheaper, but at least it doesn't show a lame background with little fluffy clouds. | Horrible, but as Amano did it, I give it more credit. Blame me for being an Amano Fanboy. |
[edit] Male Character
| Best Male Character | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Auron | Zidane | Squall Leonhart |
| Auron is badass-ness in digital form. His quotes are deep and his story may not be touching, but it is cool: a fallen monk who protected a summoner who defeated Sin, died in the process, and even protected the summoner's daughter who followed the father's steps, and lead her to a better fate. Sin's death is a consequence of Auron's wisdom, and for me, he's FFX's real hero. | Zidane, while a ladies' man, is also a very deep character. He is friendly, honest (such irony...), and nice. He helps people regardless of who they are and is someone you'd like to have on your side. Plus, he has the balls to walk around in pink and with a tail. For me, he is a true Hero! | Yes. Mr. Loner Emo is number third. Squall Leonhart is actually a good character. Closed from the rest of the world, with what appears to be a symptom of autism, he is is one of the greatest leaders in the series, and one of the most skilled warriors. Also, 2/3 of the girls in the main cast fell for him (although he picked the wrong one, but no one cares). Mr. Leonhart is actually a great hero, and a very strong character. |
| Worst Male Character | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Edward | Vaan | Cloud |
| Edward is a wussy whore. He's the most useless character in every single Final Fantasy and I hope there is a sadistic mini-game on Final Fantasy IV DS where you torture him. On a cast of wonderfull and badass characters like FFIV's, Edward excells on the debut of black sheep. He is a whiny bastard, not to mention a lame fighter. Not even Tellah, who lost his daugther cried as much, and a parent's pain is much greater. | Vaan shouldn't be considered male. He's lame as hell and just sucks up with the party in Final Fantasy XII. In Revenant Wings, he makes himself as a childish leader, while in Final Fantasy Tactics A2, he has Penelo to save his debut, which in my opinion, has done a great job babysitting Vaan on every game that he has appeared. | Cloud represents the greatest disappointment to me. No Tifa, no Aeris and then he's not even himself! He's a wussy crossdresser who must travel through his past to show his true self. Honestly, Cloud is only fun for comical relief. |
[edit] Female Character
| Best Female Character | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Ashe | Dagger | Tifa |
| Nope, I haven't chosen her neither for her boobs or ass. Ashelia B'nargin is the strongest chick around Final Fantasy: She lost her Father, she lost her Husband, and she lost her Kingdom. But none of those stoped her from trying to recover it, and she did it, by defeating 5 Espers, defying the Undying and defeating a bloody Empire. | Garnet Til Alexandros XVII is another woman of steel. Her mother, who she loved deeply, changed herself into a greedy monster, who died in combat. Her kingdom beloved was razed by an Eidolon and a warship. Did she stop? No. She overcame the guilt that she felt inside and fought until the end. | Tifa is an aweome character with some huge boobs. But that's not why she's here: She belongs to a secret extremist faction; she loves Cloud, and for being able to, I give her my respect; she saw her father being killed and tried to avenge him, even if outmatched; and finnaly, she escaped from a toxic gas death machine barehanded. |
| Worst Female Character | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Yuna (X-2) | Krile | Yuffie |
| That's not a female protagonist! That's a whore! She is empty and basic, and reminds me of an Harry Potter game: "Yuna! Do this! Yuna! Do that!". Summoner Yuna was much more of a character, but it seems that all of her personal strength went down through the toilet. | Krile is the most annoying character from Final Fantasy V. She is even worse than Galuf, and replaces him badly. For me, she's just another blowhard kid. | Yuffie is annoying as hell. Her weapon makes no sense and she is useless to the party. And worse: they replaced Rikku for her on Kingdom Hearts, who is a much better character, and they put her on FFVII:CC just to annoy the hell out of us, making us watch redundant cutscnes after doing missions. That materia thief is by far the most stupid character from FFVII. |
[edit] Villain
| Best Villain | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Kefka | Kuja | Mateus Palamecia |
| Kefka is just mad! Crazy Clowns score the highest on the psycopath scale and Kefka is just plain awesome. His lines are the best of a villan in the series and he dealed some hard damage on the world. Kefka is the best villan ever, and you can't deny it. | Another FFIX Character on the top: as greater as my hatedom for thongs may be, Kuja is just awesome. He is the one who caused the destruction of the four greatest nations of the world and he even destroyed it, being stopped only by an entity of destruction, created to save the story. I also love his style and abilities, and he is just awesome. | Mateus Palamecia is another badguy that caused some hard damage on the world. Other than infesting it of deadly monsters, he took many lives with his weapons of mass destruction. He is so damn evil that even Hell refused him. |
| Worst Villain | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Illua | Vayne | Necron |
| For starters, she has the worst sprite I ever saw in a game. Even Ewen has a better sprite and it's just a pallette swap of a ninja! Second, she is there all around the game, and no personal development is made about her! I mean, Necron shows up on the last minutes of storyline and Ultimecia has the personality Edea shows up on the first half of the game, but this bitch has nothing! We don't know anything about her Grimoire, we don't know anything about her motifs, nothing! This is the lamest villain I ever saw... | I hate sockpuppets and Vayne's nothing more than one. Venat and Cid are the real villans of the game. This guy just killed his dad and made it alive until the final battle, and more! He was betrayed by his little brother and his judge magister! Doesn't it tell you a bit about this guy? | Who is he? What is he? Nobody knows! He says he won't die. - How bad can that be? Every. Villain. Dies. It's a natural law! Anyhow, this is another part of the nostalgy of Final Fantasy IX, but I even think that Chaos could make a better apearance in here. Oh well... |
[edit] Race/Creature
| Best Race/Creature | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Moogle | Viera | Qu |
| Kupo Kupo! Moogles are great! Chocobos are overrated, and they are nothing but a mean of transportation. Yeah they're cute, and so? Moogles are much cuter and useful than any chocobo! Their theme is also much better: It gives me the feeling of both mischief and cuteness. They make Airships, they cast spells, they can summon, and they make an awesome debut whenever they appear! Save Moogles, telepatic moogles, engineer moogles! Kupo! | Viera are perfect. Their solitary style hides their true fearsomeness. They are the best race on Final Fantasy Tactics Advance: Their nimble skills, their magic might and their beauty makes it for the second best race on Ivalice. | I believe I'm the only one who sees the true face of the Qu. They may be fat, gluton creatures, but I find that addiction to food funny. Quina is far from bad, as its skills are some of the best on the game. The ability to deal large damage at the beggining of the game is much appreciated by me, and I think most people don't give the credit to these people. |
| Worst Race/Creature | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Guado | Shumi | Seeq |
| The Guado are horrible, and tough Seymour is an excellent villan on the Final Fantasy series, his race is just bad and blind. If Seymour jumped off a cliff, the entire Guado Race would be extinguished. They are just lame followers of beliefs and they deserve no respect. Bite Kimahri! Bite! | Shumi are horrible. NORG may be their black sheep, but Shumi only are good for one reason: to give birth to the lovely and mighty race Moomba. Until then, they are ugly, good-for-nothing creatures. | Seeq are the weakest Race of Ivalice. They cannot use any magic at all, as they are overgrown pigs, and due to their size, they must rely on their brute strength, which, for me, is a no-go for battle. |
[edit] Summon Creature
| Best Summon Creature | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Madeen | Leviathan | Ramuh |
| Madeen is just awesome because he is Terra's father and all that. I really like him, as he gave his life and honour to stay with his lover, but then was separated from her by that bitch Gesthal. In FFIX, he is even cooler and makes an awesome debut as Eiko's moogle guardian. | Leviathan is the god of seas and beauty. I think his appearances are even more beautiful than Shiva's, and he is and awesome summon, usually being only weaker to that powerhouse. I love Leviathan, and he's usually underrated. His artworsks are amazing too, and he's always related to the story as a deity: The unsummonable Eidolon, the King of Eidolons, the Wutai God... | Ramuh is the best thunder summon. He is usually the one that actually talks to you. I loved him on VI and IX, and I hope he shows up on XIII. He is actually one of the fou Final Fantasy Characters that I could make a LEGO figurine of, and I just love his elderly and wise personality. |
| Worst Summon Creature | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Remora | Goblin | Odin |
| Remora, the Summon that takes Speed away from enemies! Yay!...Seriously now, what was the development team smoking when they decided to put this shitty summon on a game. Fortunatley, we had Sylph at the same time, which is like, 10 times better than the other two level 1 summons of FFV. | Another good-for-nothing summon, this one can be a pain in the ass for perfectionists due to the difficulty of obtaining him. | Odin is simply annoying. He is a waste of MP in many games, as he may fail. The only games where he can be usefull are the ones where you can get Gilgamesh after, bar VI, as Gilgamesh was only a bonus content. |
[edit] World
| Best World | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| FFXII:RW's Lemurés | FFXII's Ivalice | FFVII's "Planet" |
| This is a wonderful world. Lemurés is just fantastic, and tough I made the location articles of this game, I fell in love for them much earlier. Arda, Tornelados, Zephyr and Muruc Cahuac Skysea are some of the beautiful locations of this exotic, marvelous floating archipelago. Maybe it's because I'm from an island, but I just love this place. | A magnificent place, Square's newest MMO should take place on a expanded version of this map, maintaining the original ones. I just Love Phon Coast and Ozmone, as well as Salikawood and Cerobbi Steppe. This game houses some of the most marvellous areas on the series, and a soundtrack that completes them. | This is a world without another. It is featured on 4 games (or are they 5?), but only fully explored once, and epically. FFVII is the second longest game of the series if I recall, and I loved its world, which was surely the greatest thing from it. Mideel, Midgar and Nibel are singular locations on the history of gaming, along with Junon Coast, the famous Shore of Sun and the mighty Northern_Crater. All are wonderfull scenes. |
| Worst World | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| FFII's World | FFVIII's World | FFX's Spira |
| Easiliy the least astonishing world of the series, FF2 is a great game, but it is ruined by it's nonsensical demographic destribution. Kashuan, the abandoned lands? Palamecia, the castle on the desert mountains? The distant land of Deist? - I played this game some 10 times, and its world always surprises me on how incoherent it is. | A world split on six governments? Please! Trabia, Balamb, Galbadia, Timber, Esthar and Dollet? Couldn't they figure something more? At least they have the excuse of having a horde of monsters constantly roaming through the lands, and it is geographically pleasant to the eye. | Many will disagree with me, but I think of Spira has a nonsensical geografical arrangement. You climb a bit after Luca and you end on a Polar-stylish lake zone, but then, a bit to the west, you have a desertic island! I can't understand this game's world, and the fact of being the first with no free expansion throughout the world map made me bit confuse. Fortunatley, we have FFXII:RW and FFIX to feed our nostalgic hunger. |
[edit] Recurring Boss
| Best Recurring Boss | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Gilgamesh | Beatrix | Turks |
| Duh! I'm Gilgamesh Fanboy no. 1! Anyway, you can't deny his superiotrity. He's the most recurring character after Bahamut, Shiva and Ifrit, he has 6 arms, he wields our favourite weapons, and he seethes pure badassness!!! Gilgamesh is awesomeness in pixels and I love his fights, specially the ones on FFXII, where he has VA! Tough he is lame as hell on FFIX, he rocks hard in any other game! Too bad that bastard Necrophobia killed him...I enjoyed to kill that asshole slowly. | Her fights were challenging and nice. The scenarios where you fight her (and fight alonside her) are all so amazing, much like all of the ones on FFVIII and FFIX. Beatrix herself is an amazing character, with a good pair of boobs to match. Her fights are so cheap and she's strong as hell. I'd enjoy to have her on the party, like much any other player. | I think that the Turks, like the Qu, are largely underrated. Before Crisis looks like a decent game and the Turks are an excellent group of characters: Cissnei, Reno, Rude and Tseng are my favourites. I Enjoyed the fights on FFVII, and Reno and Rude are pretty cool on AC. |
| Worst Recurring Boss | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| FFVIII Biggs and Wedge | Leblanc | Ultros |
| Biggs and Wedge are some of the most annoying characters on this game. They are useless and lame, and as I heard on a website, they are "Gilgamesh and Enkidu with no balls" - And how right they are. | They are just bad-dressed idiots that follow a lame girl who would even cut an arm for her lover. I wouldn't if you're asking, but this is just another group of characters from X-2 that makes the game suckier. They actually look like a rip-off of Heartlesses from KH for me... | Ultros is annoying and nonsensical. Gilgamesh got free from his master, while Ultros got a new one. I really don't like Ultros and his battles are too stupid and predictable. His quotes are nothing near interesting and Octopuses are only meant for one thing: to be eaten. |
[edit] Dramatic Scene
I don't know who asked for this (Actually, it was a guy called Bob)...but why not? Whoever hates spoilers should pass this one.
| Best Dramatic Scene | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Tidus' Death | Aeris' Death | Minwu's Death |
| I felt really sad on this one. This is far the one who touched me deepest. Of course, Yuna saying "I love you" on an apatic tone didn't help of course, but still, the sadness of the whole scene: the sending of the Aeons, the death of Jecth and the Death of Auron contribute to the morbid feeling that this ending scene transmits. I never felt so sad when finishing a game, that's for sure. | Aerith's Death is also very touching and I felt so down on this scene. Defeating Jenova Life while listening to her theme is very painful and sad. The bad side of it, is that FFVII's graphics sucked hard. | Minwu is my favourite character on FFII and his death is quite sad. I liked his wise and brave personality and he kicks ass with White Magic. I really like Minwu, and from all the deaths on FFII, his is the most touching. |
| Worst Dramatic Scene | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Galuf's Death | Tidus and Yuna Rejoined | Faris and Lenna find themselves |
| This scene is completely void of feelings. The act of Galuf's sacrifice and the attempt to revive him are purely stupid. Hell, even King Tycoon's death was better represented! I felt nothing on this scene and the line "Galuf has died" shows how empty this game can be. Not one of Square's touchiest moments I say. | COME ON! THE GUY DIED! YOU CAN'T REVIVE HIM! The attempt of reviving characters of Square's is pitiful. Things live, things die, they can't live again after that! Square's attempt to imitate Jesus's ressurection is lame and stupid and absolutley screws the game. I prefer the normal ending - Yuna sees Tidus on the Farplane: now that's how things are meant to be. It' much more touching than him showing up from the seas two years after diving into them if you ask me. | Another episode of emptyness on FF, Final Fantasy V is clean of emotions and dramactic scenes. I don't like neither its plot twists or its cast: Both awful as hell. |
[edit] Soundtrack
| Best Soundtrack | |||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place | Honorary Title |
| Final Fantasy III | Final Fantasy VIII | Final Fantasy IV | Final Fantasy VII |
| Final Fantasy III has a wonderful soundtrack and I can't stop earing it! The Overworld, the Airship and the Boss Battle are some of the greatest tracks from the whole series. I loved it on the NES, I loved it on the DS and I love the Black Mages remakes. | This game also has a very special OST. It sounds rushy and hard, but it is awesome and revolutionary. Force your Way is probably the best boss battle theme of the series and Man with the Machine gun is just perfect. The Extreme, Liberi Fatali and Eyes on Me are very good too, and are the best tracks that describe this game. I just love this game and its music. | Final Fantasy IV has one of the most sweet soundtracks of the series and titles like Battle with the four Fiends, Theme of Love and Zeromus are magnificent. Tsuki no Akari is beautiful and this game's new remade tracks for the DS sound amazing. | Final Fantasy VII is not one of the three best on the series, but it is so good that it deserves distiction from the other ones that are not here. This music touched me so deep back then, that I still humn some of its most memorable tracks 6 years after playing it for the first time: Main Theme, Highwind, Aerith's Theme, One-Winged-Angel, The Chosen One and Shinra's Theme are only some of the tracks that make this touching soundtrack awesome. |
| Worst Soundtrack | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core | Final Fantasy X-2 | Final Fantasy II |
| Crisis Core stinks with rock everywere. It is saved by its remade tracks: Nibelheim, Shinra, Aerith, One-Winged Angel...But even then, it still is full of boring rock. The only original song that caught my attention was the one that plays during the Genesis vs Sephiroth flashback, which is awesome. The theme music Why isn't any good too, and its videoclip sucks. I think this soundtrack actually helped me on getting fed up of Crisis Core. | This is a totally different OST from any other game in the series, and I don't like it one bit. Of course, there are some sweet tracks like "1000 Words" and those boss battle ones, but if you actually notice, there is no prelude, and the victory fanfare is completely different from the ones that tuned our joy. In spite of these bad aspects, FFX-2 has a creative soundtrack, which can end up being somewhat annoying, as the variety of tracks is rearely seen. FFX-2 has easily one of the worse soundtracks of the series | Not that it's the suckiest around, but it's bad enough for a member of the golden main series. It excels on its battle themes and little else. While some locations have interesting themes, the main theme is by far the worst in the series, and tracks like "Run!" or "Revived Emperor" are not jokes. They'll really make you run away. |
[edit] Job\Class
| Best Job\Class | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Blue Mage | Summoner | Onion Knight |
| Simply, the best. Healing abilities, offensive spells and suportive spells. Physical strength with an excelent magical versatility, not to mention the accessibility to exclusive elements - the arsenal of a Blue Mages. The high-rank Healing Wind and Mighty Guard, the basic, but damaging Goblin Punch, and the colossal Magical Punch, Blue Mages are far the most powerful job/class on the whole series. | Summoners summon shit from the under! They have a huge array of spells, and summons grew stronger and stronger along the games, as their numbers increased, and so did their effects. Summoners are easily the strongest magical-based job in the series, as they are able to exploit the weaknessess of their enemies, and even if they haven't any, Bahamut can take care of any job. | For a great magical caster like the summoner, we have the greatest physical behemoth from the series. An Onion Knight's full strength is absurd. In the DS version of FF3, Onion Knights went from great physical monsters, to all-mighty mosnters with magic and summons as well. Nothing stops the Onion Knight! |
| Worst Job\Class | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Oracle | Bard | Berserker |
| Oralces are rat shit. They have lowsy stats, and their abilities are rarely useful. FFT Oracles aren't that awful, but their stats screws it all. FFV Oracles are the worst job in the game. If you ever see one of these on your list, don't ever choose it if you want to fight. | Bards are also bad, but they have Requiem, which is very useful at some point on the game. Otherwise, they are known for their songs and bad physical status, and I didn't like them even on FFIII, as a White Mage was much more useful as a healer. | Berserkers have nice physical statuses, and the ones from FFX-2 are quite good thanks to their abilities and statuses. Other than that, the lack of control is frustrating and they are just bad. |
[edit] Technological Leap
| Best Technological Leap | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Final Fantasy VIII | Final Fantasy XII | Final Fantasy VI |
| After the graphically horrible Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII showed us what Squaresoft could offer best: A completely new system; awesome graphics (both in-game and FMV) taht stood unmatched on the gaming history for quite a while; a very...uhm...story; wacky weapons and a sucky cast. Final Fantasy VIII will remain in history, as the game that followed PSX's great epic: Final Fantasy VII, but for me, it will be the game that surpassed it. | Five years of development and waiting were worth it. Final Fantasy XII is Ivalice's hitory greatest chapter. The graphics schemes were totally changed, allowing the player to turn the view from every angle he might wish, featuring awesome full-3D maps. The battle system was also hyped out, featuring a realistic battle system. Final Fantasy XII was a innovation to the series, and an inspiration for the outcome games. | Final Fantasy V was for Final Fantasy VI what Final Fantasy VII was for Final Fantasy VIII. The music and graphics were changed and improved, and so was the gameplay. The crystals are gone and on its place was Magicite: one of the most revolucionary ability learning systems on the series, which served as inspiration to the beloved Materia system. The ATB used here was also used on the following games, stopping on Final Fantasy X. and last but not least, the Limit Break system was also first used here, and has been used for every game up to now. |
| Worst Technological Leap | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Final Fantasy V | Final Fantasy VII | Final Fantasy II |
| Final Fantasy V showed up with even worse map graphics than Final Fantasy IV. In the other hand, the jobs that our beloved cast had and thet we held so dear were split by the Crystals, only to be given to the cast of Four Warriors of Light. This game revived many things lost from Final Fantasy III, like the Spell-buying system; the Crystals that granted jobs; the Forbbiden Land and Moogles...not to mention the first battle against mere Goblins. Final Fantasy V is the resurrection of Final Fantasy III. | Final Fantasy VII is a graphical and plot change of Final Fantasy VI. Magicite is now called Materia; Aria de Mezzo Carattere is called Aerith's Theme; the Empire is called Shinra; and Kefka is called Sephiroth. Final Fantasy VII is basically a rip-off from Final Fantasy VI, and so hhas teh worst technological leap. | Final Fantasy II was a surprise. Tough enemies were badder and better, the music, the simple plot and the player's freedom were limited in this game, which is still one of the best of the series. Final Fantasy II is good, but not as fun and addicting as the original Final Fantasy. |
[edit] Battle System
| Best Battle System | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Final Fantasy X-2 | Final Fantasy X | Final Fantasy XII |
| Final Fantasy X-2 has an excellent gameplay. The ATB is at it's best, and back attacks, pincer attacks and ambushes are all shown here, even tough there is no destinction. The ability to change classes makes the game really dynamic, and the charge time is flawless, as two or more abilities can be done at the same time. These battles are the most fast-paced on the series. | Final Fantasy X dug up the Turn System from Final Fantasy III, II and I, and turned it perfect, turning Final Fantasy X into an RPG\Strategy game. With this system, you can plan your whole battle from the beggining, as the game shows when you can attack and how that attack will influence the battle's course. A great system indeed, it was "borrowed" by a LotR game, whose name I can't recall. | Final Fantasy XII has the most revolutionary battle system on any Final Fantasy. That does not mean it is the best. It can be quite boring to just watch the game to do all by itself, much like a Lemmings game: You tell them what to do and you wait them to do it. I killed Pylraster and Ixion this way: Using gambits for the three characters. Other than all that, FFXII is a very fast and enjoyable game. The free-expansion style of the game lets us to roam the beautiful areas that it has. |
| Worst Battle System | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Final Fantasy Mystic Quest | Final Fantasy IV | Final Fantasy VIII |
| Final Fantasy Mystic Quest has something that a Final Fantasy game should never have: a first person battle system. Of course, it could be any good, but even then, it sucks: The characters are 10 times smaller than the enemies, and every poiint of the battle system is bad. Truly a boring game. | Final Fantasy IV's battle system is rather annoying in my point of view. The row system is easily the worst of the series, as it only allows you to put two or three characters on the back\front row. Mage-only parties are not an option. Another annoying thing are the flaws of the charge time gameplay, as it increases the time that you have to wait for abilities to be executed. Characters also take a lot of time to run away, which can be pretty annoying on those hard dungeons (Lunar Subterrane). | Final Fantasy VIII's battle system is very cheap. I played the game with a bad EBOOT that froze almost everytime that I would cast a spell, and even then I was able to reach NORG. Limit Breaks and GFs can be spammed in order to kill even the toughest bosses in minutes. Renzokuken and Duel are certain death, and that sort of takes away part of the game's fun. |
[edit] Enjoyability
| Most Enjoyable Game | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Final Fantasy III | Final Fantasy | Final Fantasy IX |
| Final Fantasy III is the most fun to play because of its gameplay: the simple plot and the ability to play the game always with a different strategy makes the game very enjoyable and fun. This game even adds to the original some of our favourite jobs and features, such as the Summoner, the Dragoon and the Dark Knight, that heavily influenced the later games. Final Fantasy III also has an awesome soundtrack, that makes playing even better. I got so wired to this game, that I will never get tired of it, and whoever hasn't played this yet, should really give it a try, should it be NES or DS version. | The original Final Fantasy is very close to Final Fantasy III in this matter because of its simple plot and versatile gameplay options that heavily influenced that game, but where Final Fantasy really stars is in its excellent replay value: you may have played it 1000 times, but once you begin, you can't stop playing. The new dungeons added in the Dawn of Souls remake even increase this value, as it expands the duration and the various cameos to recent series are very fun to see. The father of the whole series will always be the most fun to play...Again. | Final Fantasy IX amazed me like no other and I can never get tired of it. The excessive cameos of older series are very enjoyable to see, and, for an old school lover like me, very nostalgic. Though the job\class system is not versatile at all, the fact that all the key classes from the series are reunited alltoghether here is very precious to the gameplay. The soundtrack is also very nice, and the scenery is very old-school too: Castles instead of huge cities, Abandoned caves and castles instead of enemy facilities and headquarters. In six words: Final Fantasy IX is fucking awesome. |

| Final Fantasy Mystic Quest | Final Fantasy V | Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales |
| Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is dull, boring and bad. The random encounter rate of this game is 0, as you are the one who chooses to fight your enemies, and that is just bad. Not that FFXII is bad, as in FFXII, most enemies attack you when hey insight you. Second of all, this game's gameplay is the worst in the series, being a first-person gameplay. Also, those "tournament" or whatsoever areas are the cheapest thing in a Final Fantasy games, which are just spots that say: "Hey dude!You can grind here...if you can be bothered to!"...I just fucking hate this game. | Final Fantasy V has one of the best job systems ever, but if you happen to think of the task of mastering it as mandatory, you are screwed. It turns far from enjoyable, as you must grind hours and hours in order to master those precious jobs of yours: I just can't stand it. The random encounter rate is actually pretty high too, which actually easens the task above, but turns the game much more tiring and boring if you just want to actually finish the game. | Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales is a very boring game: the intro is long and dull, Chocobo keeps being Shirma's bitch, the mini-games aren't that fun, and some can even become ridiculously hard in order to reach some objectives, and Chocobos aren't even that fun, not even the thousands of cameos in this game are fun...! Fairy Tales shouldn't be mixed with Final Fantasy, that's for sure. |
[edit] Bestiary
| Best Bestiary | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Final Fantasy X's | Final Fantasy XII's | Final Fantasy VIII's |
| Final Fantasy X is the most faithful game to the series in terms of bestiary. Behemoths, Malboros, Sahagins, Worms, Flans...you name it, it's there. This game has the best list of recurring monsters, and they are all close to their former appearances on some nice Playstation 2 graphics, which makes this game's bestiary the most nostalgic of the series. And talking about non-nostalgic foes, the newer enemies are even greater! Those tough Defenders and those evil Demons are as good as a game could get, and I see no other game with better bestiary than this perfect masterpiece of the series. | The bestiary from Final Fantasy XII is close to the one from Final Fantasy X in quality. All the important recurring creatures lie there, and in a definition never seen. It is one of the most loyal to the series, and the environment where the enemies themselves are put just fits them perfectly, but there is a but: Many monsters in this game hold old names, but their appearance can be totally different from what we're used to see: Malboros are small plants, Behemoths are now humanoid giants, Ahriman is now a twisted ghost rather than an evil floating eyeball...Much is different in this game, and tough not dissapointing, as I find it creative, and loyalty to the series' recurring bestiary is where Final Fantasy XII stars. | Final Fantasy VIII may have one of the smallest bestiaries in the series, but most enemies are actually recurring, and the new ones are quite amusing! I always liked the enemies of this game, and I prefer the "newcomers" from Final Fantasy VIII to the ones from other games by far (If we exclude the ones above). The fact that the enemies level with you rather than changing constantly from area to area can be seen in some Ivallice Alliance games, most specificly, all the Strategy RPGs from the series, so I don't know why people bash that feature in tis game. This game is creative and innovative in every aspect. |

| Final Fantasy X-2's | Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates' | Final Fantasy Adventure |
| Nostalgy is one thing, rip-off is another. The number of enemies added to this game is incredibily low, the enemies added to the game actually suck ass, and a lot of sprites and renders are "recicled" from Final Fantasy X, and you know what recicled paper does to your printer: it screws it. Nontheless, battles are where Final Fantasy X-2 stars, but the bestiary is where it fails. | This chapter of the Crystal Chronicles seires introduced me to it, and the only dissapointing thing that I have found was the small and limited bestiary. The enemies are few and reappear often, and bosses are, at least, basic and simple. I only found a handfull of recurring beasts during my playthrough (which wasn't that short, mind you), and I must say, that didn't please me one bit. | First of all, this isn't even a Final Fantasy game, it's a part of the Mana series, and I have played this came on the GBA, called Sword of Mana...and I tell you, I am not fond with its bestiary. Rabits and Metaballs didn't catch me, and will never do. The game is nice, but the Magic system and most bosses are bad and boring, not to mention that the bosses ripped from the Final Fantasy series (I only know of Ifrit and Marilith) are badly represented. |
[edit] Story
| Best Story | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Final Fantasy VI | Final Fantasy VII | Final Fantasy X |
| No comment. Final Fantasy VI shows us the stories of a wonderful cast, and can be seen as the soap opera in the Final Fantasy Series, but boy, it is good! All the characters are excellent (cutting maybe some few), and their stories rock. Though the World of Balance holds more of a straightforward story, as it focuses on the battle between the Returners and the Empire, and how Terra got caught in-between, the World of Ruin's story is just magnificent, and it couldn't be writen any better. Deepness and emotion are always present on this game's most memorable scenes, which will never be forgotten by the mediocre player. | Final Fantasy VII's story may be not pure as some of the others, but in raw, it is near perfect. It's style shows remnants of Final Fantasy VI, in what matters in character development, but it's not as deep and is less uniform, but characters do gain development in the Complitaion, but we're not talking about that one. Final Fantasy VII is gifted of many memorable scenes, which, in my case, were far more memorable than VI's, such as Nibelheim's Flashback, the WEAPONS' arrisal or Junon's escape. Final Fantasy VI wins though, because of the masterpiece that the World of Ruin and its cast are, which in my case, are the gold of the Final Fantasy Series' stories. | Final Fantasy X is a mediocre game compared to the other two in here, but its story is just fascinating and alluring. The mixes of a journey, love story and the even huge amount of plot twists resulted on a fascinating story for game. This was the second Final Fantasy I ever bought, and back then I was already caught by the series. Nevertheless, this game fascinated me so that I could not give up until I finished it, and oddly enough, its scenes are far more memorable that VII's, which I actually played first. It is the golden RPG of the Playstation II, and worth the buy only for the story itself. |

| Final Fantasy X-2 | Final Fantasy Mystic Quest | Final Fantasy Tactics A2 |
| Final Fantasy X-2's story is awful and void of intelligence and deepness. It is sometimes boring, and other times it's annoying. The end can be quite good, if it's not the perfect one, in which case, it can even make the story worse. The Gullwings and most of FFX's characters were turned into dumb sockpuppets, thus, character development actually screwed the characters themselves, and as one said: some things better do not prolonged. | Final Fantasy Mystic Quest's story is dull and void of character development. Its script is straightforward and the gameplay is too. This game is as bad as it could, from begginning to end. Litteraly. It has no plot twists visible and no sentimental content either. In six words: This game is just fucking bad. | Final Fantasy Tactics A2 is a game done for battle, not story. Its story is straightforward and simple, and is much worse than Final Fantasy Tactics Advance's. Luso suddenly appears in a new world and is told that to return, he must complete his journal. What does he do? Battle till the cows come home. Basically, neither Luso, Lezaford, Cid, Illua or Hurdy have character development, which basically makes that 80% of the main cast have no character development, which is BAD. Buy this game for playing, not for it's story. |

| Most Straightfoward Final Fantasy | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Final Fantasy VIII | Final Fantasy Tactics | Final Fantasy X |
| This game is very good, but one thing is true: it really lacks on sidequests. Not that I dislike that, bacause I really can't imagine it with them, nor know if it would become better or worse. It is a pelicular game, whose only sidequests involve Guardian Forces and Cards, but even if you like a big game with huge amounts of sidequests, I believe that this one here may turn you the other side... | If Final Fantasy Tactics has more of less sidequests than Final Fantasy VIII, I do not know. But I do know that Final Fantasy Tactics is a superior game to Final Fantasy VIII and that the PSP remake added some more sidequests to it, not to mention the fantastic multiplayer mode that it obtained. If you are to play this game, play it for PSP, and bring a friend. ;) | Final Fantasy X also lacks in sidequests, but it actually has them. The thing is, those are really time taking and sometimes, really boring. The Celestial Weapons Sidequest is the most time-taking on the whole series, but it is one of the five or six that the game has. This game could really use some more simple sidequests, or easen the ones it already has. |
| Least Straightfoward Final Fantasy | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Final Fantasy X-2 | Final Fantasy VI | Final Fantasy XII |
| Final Fantasy X-2 has a small story, all the rest are sidequests. And dull ones: most consist on doing what the population wants the gullwings to do, covered by a great excuse of Yuna's: "We might find some spheres."...AW COME ON! YOU'RE A DAMN HUMANITARIST, IS THERE ANY PROBLEM ON THAT?! geez... | As I said, Final Fantasy VI's World of Ruin is very versatile, and nothing as straightforward. It is gold tough, and I just love it how it is. This game couldn't be any better, and it has great sidequests to share. | Final Fantasy XII has a huge lot of sidequests while on the storyline. The easyness of walking around all over Ivalice is great and allows for great sidequests to be done, such as Bazaar, Hunts and Esper-hunting. Though these are the only great sidequests of the game, they are all huge and ask for a lot of training, and sometimes they are even interconnected with each others, which is freaking fun and awesome. |

| Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings' Galbana | Final Fantasy VII's Highwind | Final Fantasy III's Invincible |
| Maybe it's the blue shades, maybe it's the avion shape, but the Galbana is just kickass! It is carrier, meant to carry the Feol Viera to their homeland, but it is rather the airship used by Vaan and his friends. The crew may not be the best, but the cabin is the awesomest. It holds almost an intire village, and it is able to fly all over the beautiful Purvama of Lemurés, the best world that ever appeared in a Final Fantasy game. | What's not to love about this ship? I know it looks like a piece of flying scrap metal, or a merge of three or four helicopters, but everything about this ship gives me fond memories: The theme, the chocobos inside it, and the ability to fly over the beautiful Planet...I just adore it. | The original Invincible is a nice ship. It not only gives you the ability to rest for free, it also sells some of the best equipment in the game, as well as it has a great stock of those really useful items you need. It also supports you in battles, and it's not on a limit break, like the Highwind: It actually deals damage to all enemies an any air battle. Sure, they are few, but you don't have to sweat on those battles, as the enemies you find can easily die from the same attacks. It would also let you to disembark virtually anywhere, which is a rare feat by the World Map airships. |
| Worst Vehicle | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Final Fantasy VII's Buggy | Final Fantasy X-2's Celsius | Final Fantasy XII's Chocobos |
| The Buggy is actually a common canoe that can walk through land, and that is lame, because though canoes can only go through rivers, they can go through every river in their games. The Buggy is just a raft with wheels, which is useless most of the game, as Blue Chocobos and the Tiny Bronco soon become available. | The Celsius, while bad-looking, is also lame as it is basically a flying motorcycle. The crew is even worse than the Galbana, and it surprises me that it didn't crash through the playthrough. The shop is awful and useless, and other than it, there isn't much to see, other than a tutorial and the bestiary. | Final Fantasy XII has a lot of interesting vehicles, but Chocobos, the adventurer's best friends, are just terrible. They cost hell to ride, and there is a time limit for riding too. I only used them once, when I wanted to reach Balfonheim before the storyline would lead me to it, and yet, it was a stressing task. |
[edit] Main Cast
| Best Main Cast | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Final Fantasy IV's | Final Fantasy VI's | Final Fantasy IX's |
| Final Fantasy IV has the best cast that a Final Fantasy could have. It has a Dark Knight, a Paladin, a Dragoon, a White Mage, an Archer, a Summoner, a Black Mage, a Bard, a Sage, an Engineer, a Red Mage, a Monk and a Ninja. It has a deep story that shapes them, and it has nice villans too. It has love, despair and everything else. I just love it, and it will be tough to have a cast that can surpass this one. | Another premium cast, Final Fantasy VI has more sophisticated characters, and more development for them. It does not follow the Final Fantasy traditions that we saw up to now, having a female as the protagonist, and a party composed of a Red Mage, a Thief, a Machinist, a Monk, a Paladin?, a Samurai, a Ninja, a Beastmaster, a Blue Mage, a Pictomancer, a Gambler, a Mimic, a Dancer and a brute Berserker as the main cast. Final Fantasy VI was, thus, a liberator of the series. | Beautiful and well-composed, is the cast of Final Fantasy IX. Though it has not all the classes that Final Fantasy IV shows, it shows a big bunch of them, and such can be seen in the characters abilities, who carry trademarks of many other jobs, such a Steiner having Darkside, or Amarant having Throw. Also, most characters are deep and suffer heavy development in the storyline, which is always good and interesting. |
| Worst Main Cast | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Final Fantasy X-2 | Final Fantasy Tactics A2's | Final Fantasy V's |
| This cast is so bad that it hurts. They are lame, and the only decent characters are probably Paine and Rikku, the latter being sickning annoying, thing that didn't happen in Final Fantasy X. Brother annoys me and Buddy depresses me. Shinra makes me want to grab a chainsaw and Yuna became fucking dumb. Nooj, Gippal, Baralai and LeBlanc are boring pimps, and suck as major NPCs. | Final Fantasy Tactics A2 is bad on pretty much everything that is related to the story. Luso is basically a hasty kid with a love for danger, Adelle is a lone-wolf... Oh, wait! She isn't!... Oh, no, she is, but...hey! Nah, she isn't. Ilua is too mysterious for my own liking and has no back-story, so no one actually knows how she got her Grimoire, so the only chracter above bad is Cid, who has motifs, story and development. | I don't know why, but I dislike this cast. Maybe its the modern script of the game that makes the characters more vulgar, maybe it's because they are lame and boring, or maybe it's because the game focuses harder on everything else other than the party. Character development is small, and characters show no personal depth. But I seriously think that it is because they pretty much suck. |
[edit] Main Theme
| Best Main Theme | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Final Fantasy VII's | Final Fantasy III's | Final Fantasy IV's |
| Of all the tracks of Final Fantasy VII, this one is by far the most memorable and impressive. I could spend ages in the overworld, only to hear this theme again and again and again and again. It's wonderful, it's both calm and gentle and dark and misterious. It's the greatest in the list and the best track of the entire soundtrack by far, as well as the longest. Also, the track that replaces it further in the game is not bad either, but the fact that we can get to ear the Highwind theme is fantastic. ^_^ | I love this track for its simpleness and ryhtm. It's a beautiful and harmonious track that one can never get tired of hearing. | Final Fantasy IV's main theme easily rivals with Final Fantasy III's, as it has a magnificent and encouraging main theme. Its arrangements in-game are also very good, and always opportune. |
| Worst Main Theme | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Final Fantasy II's | Final Fantasy VIII's | Final Fantasy's |
| This main theme is just not as good as the others. It has a bad tone and rythm, which are too heavy, and its climax isn't very good. | Final Fantasy VIII has a good soundtrack, but its main theme is boring and unnimpressive. It has a really poor climax (or none at all!) and its tone isn't in harmony with the rest of the game's tracks. I believe this main theme could be much better. | Of all the others (Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy X and X-2, Final Fantasy Tactics, TA and TA2 and Final Fantasy IX), this one rocks the least. It's Dissidia remake is incredible though, and can be easily compared to the best of the rank! |

| Main Theme to Final Fantasy VII | Clash on the Big Bridge | Eternal Wind |
| Seriously now. It must be nostalgia. I just love this track and I think it's Uematsu's masterpiece! I don't know what can I say about it that I haven't said above. It's just marvellous | "ZOMG IT'S GILGAMESH!" - That's what I say after the fangasm I get when I hear this. This track is not just the awesomest battle theme in the series, but it also made me do crazy things when I rode my scooter while listening to it. I just love this! | Don't know what to say about this one too. Anyone who disses it, will be kidnaped and set to fire in my yard. Without lumber or gasoline. |
| Worst Track of the Series | ||
| 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place |
| Silence and Motion | Lightning Field | One Winged Angel |
| In the times where I hoped I could finish Final Fantasy VIII I heard stories of Esthar's greatness. Well, even when my cousin got me his disk 4 save of Final Fantasy VIII, I thought Esthar was imposing and majestic, as it spawned throughout half a continent. When I finally reached Esthar in my PSP Eboot, I could tell, with experience, that it was not as great as Saronia, Midgar or Lindblum, not only because it is way too colorful, but also because it didn't sound imposing and majestic. It sounded like Tron's world in Kingdom Hearts 2. | It isn't for the fact that this music sounds in the area where you have to dodge 200 consecutive thunder bolts, but looking at the environment, one can say this music doesn't suit its area at all. In fact, of all the places where this music could sound better in Final Fantasy X, they just put it on an area that suffers from a constant thunderstorm. Tell me in the face you believe this track suits all the lightning of a dark-grey wasteland. | One Winged Angel is probably the most overrated track of all the series. It is probably also the worst final boss theme of the entire series (among the games where I killed the final boss, this sounded the worst). Those who say that Dancing Mad bests this is right. Those who say that Zeromus bests it are right too. Heck, even those who say that Battle Scene 2 is better than this are right! OWA is blindly overrated, just like the game it is from. |
