I used to be an Arcade player until one day someone sold me an old PSOne. Among my first games there was a Final Fantasy VIII, but I played it after a few months because Oddworld, Metal Gear Solid and Tenchu were taking all of my time. Then after having every achievement in all the other games there was only that weird turn based game.
It was so hard to understand the battle system compared with the other games, and allocating the G.F.'s to every character seemed to be so complex that I almost started going crazy. But after a week I couldn't stop playing, never before I used internet to get a guide to all the things I had to do. It was enough for me to search in a magazine or ask some friends or see them playing to know what was I missing, but not with this game.
So I forgot how lame that Squall dude with his emo kid attitude was, because I was only interested in getting every item in that stupid game. I failed miserably, my patience was not enough in those days, so I went and beated the crap out of Ultimecia and finished my first RPG ever.
Today I think that FF VIII is the second worst FF I have played, only FF X-2 is worst, but in those days Final Fantasy and RPG’s in general were a big discovery for me, so I bought FF IX and I understood what a great Final Fantasy should be, this time I found everything, every item and ability, every card, every chocograph, etc.
After finishing FF IX there was only one way to go, and it was backwards, so I played FF Tactics (Amazing!!!) FF VII (Great but overrated) FF VI (one of the best RPG's ever) FF V (not that good but passable) FF IV (Great characters) FF I & FF II (Never finished any so I cant tell)
When I was playing the first two games FF X came out and I got it the very first day it appeared along with my PS2. I loved it; I loved the characters and the battle system, I loved the story and overall the ending, but someone came and said, lets ruin all of this and make a Fan service game with magical girls and horrible music, I remember the disappointment still today and I haven't burned the disk is because my little sister loved it, so I let her have it.
The gap between real Final Fantasies was filled with Kingdom Hearts and Xenosaga, until FF XII came out and a lot of people started saying that it was horrible, that it was not a real Final Fantasy, that it was strange, there were no Bahamut, Shiva or Ifrit. And I thought "great!!!!" something different was what the franchise needed. The random monsters, the turn based game, the zippers and belts all over courtesy of Tetsuya Nomura. It was more of the same, so I went for my FF XII and loved almost everything in it, except maybe for those damn random treasure chests.
Now I’m scared because Final Fantasy has become a Hen that lays golden eggs and it’s being overused but neglected at the same time. We have seen FF VII milked and exploited in a horrible way, I know that games are a serious business and there must be dividends, but maybe someone should tell them that Cloud cannot be a Mario or a Link, Square has so many beautiful things, but they are turning them in crap. I hope that things change a little and instead of having 10 mediocre Final Fantasy in one year there we get only one or two great games like the ones I love. I’m sure that wont happen, but the intention is what counts.
