Let me start off on a note that might upset a few people. I find FF VII to be the most overrated game in the series. By no means do I think it is a bad or inadequate game, but the light in which the rabid fan base exalts it is, to this humble Final Fantasy fan, absurdly hyperbolic. They often have never played the previous entries in the series, and quite frequently berate many if not all of the subsequent entries. By virtue of them not being the almighty Final Fantasy VII, these great games especially IX and XII, (which are two of the most fantastic titles in the series in my honest opinion) are down trodden by the torrid onslaught of rapacious fanboyism. Seriously, the crazed, almost theosophistic zealotry with which these reprobates persecute the other FF titles (both before and subsequent) is offensive to true fans of the series, who see the good and bad within every game.
That said, I must rephrase that I do not think FF VII is a bad game. It is a perfectly fine game, maybe even a great one. I simply think it is overrated by everyone, critics and fans alike. It is not the best entry in the series, nor is the worst (those credentials belong to VI and II respectively in my opinion). So please, all you FF VII fanboys out there, don't kill me. I like your game, it's just not my favorite. I respect that it may be yours, but don't diss the others please. It ain't cool. Oh, and Kefka could kick Sephiroth's ass.
