Hi, this is Chocolancer. Living in the Philippines for my first ten years wasn't easy, mostly because I was never interested in anime, especially when it came out for Filipino children to see, it became so popular (I mean, we are talking about anime here...). Anyways, when I moved to Canada I got interested in anime and so I've done research of old anime I remember that was probably not very popular with North American audiences. So without further ado, I present Anime You've Probably Never Heard Of!!!

Contents

[edit] Mojacko!

This anime is a strange one, a sitcom anime (probably the first I've seen). The anime was created based off the manga by Fujiko Fujio (creators of Doraemon). It starts off with a puffy round orange alien being named Mojacko who was exploring space one day with his robot partner Dono when their spaceship malfunctioned and crashed into Earth (specifically Japan). Meanwhile, a schoolboy named Surao and his friend Miki accidentally finds them and they become involved in various adventures, usually as a result of some mishap. Later on, various characters get introduced and become staple characters of the series. I never saw it wrap up or finish...

[edit] Characters

  • Mojacko- a small round puffy orange alien being from the planet Moja-Moja who crash-landed on Earth one day and met Surao. He's brave and cunning but is prone to being greedy, loud, and persistent. He is a species of alien who has a weakness to water, and whenever Mojacko is soaked in water (which happens often) he becomes a flat round pancake. He also has a huge tongue, a huge appetite, and is known to save his friends by becoming a balloon Kirby-style.
  • Dono- a robot with personality. He accompanies Mojacko when the ship crashed. He looks like a cylindrical tin can with robotic claws for arms. Though a robot, he has humanoid qualities and actions (such as bathing, eating human food, and sleeping). He also has a tendency to threaten people unintentionally.
  • Surao- a Japanese schoolboy who met Mojacko and went to adventures with him. A generic male protagonist, not much to say. He has Bartz-like hair and wears a green piece of clothing over a red shirt and dark green shorts and sneakers. Probably a predecessor to Nobita of the Doraemon series.
  • Miki- Japanese schoolgirl who is a friend of Surao. She seems to have feelings for him though he never seems to notice. Being female she gets jealous when Surao gets attention of another girl. She is notable for her red dress and red headband. Predecessor to Shizuka also of Doraemon fame.
  • Mojari- Mojacko's sister, she has maternal instincts due to the fact that she often takes care of her little brother, Mojaru. She has purple fur unlike Mojacko and sports pigtails.
  • Mojaru- the baby little brother of Mojacko and Mojaru, when he cries, earthquakes and tsunamis occur and the whole world can hear it. Is often taken care of Mojari. He has goo-goo baby eyes and is green. He only speaks "Moja!" and will take action if his freinds are ever in trouble.
  • Momonja- somewhat of an antagonist later on in the series. He is the same species as Mojacko, therefore he's small but with dark blue fur and a kind of hairstyle much like Bass from the Mega Man series. He often plots cheap tricks against Mojacko and his friends during their adventures so he can get away with something. He is in love with Mojari but is petrified whenever he gets near her.

There are also other characters introduced throughout the anime, such as Surao's parents who are actually delighted to have Mojacko and his friends' company around the house, Wutan, a tubby who is a half-friend, half-enemy of Surao, and many others.

[edit] Conclusion

Other than being a kiddie anime I actually liked it a bit when I was little as it was extremely popular in the Philippines, though it wasn't often that I was able to watch anime like now. Some episodes actually lack continuity in many ways, but being a kid's show children would most likely not notice. Many of the characters and their personality somehow actually passes over to the Doraemon series which is kind of a drag...You can watch a few of the episodes in Youtube but unfortunately they're mostly in Tagalog, and there are very few of them...If you're into Fujiko Fujio or Doraemon, you'll probably like this one.

[edit] Chōdenji Machine Voltes V (or just Voltes V)

One of the many anime I watched of the "giant robot" genre. This one is quite serious and dramatic in tone and not exactly the most cheerful I've ever watched. The manga involves an invading race known as the Boazanians who want to take over Earth by sending in giant "beast fighters" to eliminate the world's elite military. Meanwhile, in a bird-shaped island far from the Japanese coast lies a secret base where five people (four guys and a girl) undergo rigorous training to pilot a giant robot known as Voltes V, which is actually made of five separate parts. Combined as one, Voltes V battles these "beast fighters" and eventually defeat the Boazanians once and for all.

[edit] Characters

  • Kenichi (or Steve in the Filipino-English dub)- the eldest of the Go (Armstrong) siblings, he can become quite pig-headed but in return he has amazing leadership, marksmanship, Motocross biking, and piloting skills. He was an adventurous kid but that changed when his father disappeared, he now has a sense of justice and cares about protecting his teammates. Commandeers the head part of the Voltes V and wears a red uniform.
  • Daijiro (or Big Bert in the Filipino-English dub)- middle brother of the Go (Armstrong) siblings, he has great martial arts skills and in some episodes taught Kenichi some moves. He's a big guy and used to be a gentle giant, but when the Go siblings' father disappeared, he became a completely different person. Pilots the chest part of the Voltes V and wears an olive green uniform.
  • Hiyoshi (or Little John in the Filipino-English dub)- the youngest of the Go (Armstrong) siblings, he is a genius, an inventor of robots (he once invented a tiny little octopus robot he named "Tako-chan", or Octo-One in the dub), and an excellent swimmer and diver. Being the youngest he already knows how to repair complex machines and is often given the task of repairing the Voltes V. Pilots the legs of the Voltes V and wears a green uniform. In the Filipino-English dub he has a squeaky voice that I can't help but laugh at.
  • Ippei (or Mark in the Filipino-English dub)- a lone cowboy whose pioneer mother (Japanese thinking of Americans was outdated back then) was lost at a wolf attack trying to protect him. Since then he became a cold-hearted jerk who thrived in the streets. He became a famous in the rodeo business and has shared a close bond with a horse named Aiful (Alpha). Pilots the arms of the Volted V and wears a blue uniform.
  • Megumi (or Jamie in the Filipino-English dub)- daughter of a general who is fighting the Boazanians. She is an expert female ninja (and she's sexy too =) ) who by the age of 13 has lighting-fast instincts. Being the only female of the team she is the voice of reason whenever Kenichi and Ippei start fighting (which happens often). She pilots the feet part of the Voltes V and wears a yellow uniform with a miniskirt that goes along with the uniform.

[edit] Conclusion

Being one of the most famous anime during the 1970's in the Philippines, all I could say is that its quite boring and quite painful to watch in today's expectations. The storyline is way too stock and repetitive (along with many death episodes) and the battle scenes are somewhat corny and a ripoff from Godzilla. Otherwise, the art style is great and the hand-drawn animations are close to perfect as we hear the transformation montage followed by Voltes V taking out his "Sword of Heaven (or Laser Sword)" and slicing the enemy of the day in a V shape. Priceless!

[edit] Princess Sarah

This anime is another popular one in the Philippines. Though it may be classified as shojo (or girl's anime), I knew guys who watched it and loved it. Basically the anime is a retelling of the famous children's novel A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Tha anime itself was so popular that it was aired twice before and after the millenium and it even got a Filipino movie. I was also told there was a Filipino comedy/teleserye and a Japanese futuristic anime based off of it as well. It was a success.

[edit] Characters

  • Sarah Crewe- the daughter of Ralph Crewe, who is a rich diamond mogul in India. She goes one day to England with him so that she can attend a girls' boarding school. Later on, during her 11th birthday, she gets news that her father passed away, leaving her penniless. Instead of being thrown out into the streets, she was forced to become a scullery maid and had to give up most of her possessions. The anime turns from happy to depressing in a matter of seconds after that.
  • Maria Minchin- the bitch headmaster of the boarding school. With added Japanese flair, she is sinister, strict, but somehow misguided. She showers Sarah with praise and rewards upon her arrival, but once Sarah's father passed away, she pretty much becomes evil and treats Sarah like dirt after that.
  • Amelia Minchin- the plump, soft-spoken younger sister of Maria. Compared to her, she is kind-hearted and actually feels sorry for Sarah.
  • Ermengarde St. John- Sarah's best friend. Her father is a reknowned smart gentleman, but apparently she didn't inherit that ability. She is a slow-learner and is often teased by her fellow classmates. When she befriended Sarah, her school life changed for the better.
  • Lotte Legh- while she was young, her mother died, but she never understood the meaning of death and so when she moved in to the boarding school at four years-old, she often threw tantrums and bothered everyone in the school. Upon meeting Sarah, she promised to be her "mommy" so that she could feel at ease and stop throwing tantrums altogether.
  • Lavinia Herbert- the secondary antagonist next to Minchin, she is a rich snob who would often tease Sarah, calling her "Diamond Princess" due to the fact that she is jealous of Minchin's affection towards Sarah. Upon Sarah's becoming a scullery maid, she for the most part just stands in her way while doing her tasks around the school.
  • Becky- a scullery maid, her family are poor folks and so they are often scattered around the city doing odd jobs. Sarah befriends her and since has been more open to her.
  • The Indian Gentleman- later on in the anime, a man from India moved in next door to the school. With him is a servant with a monkey, who would frequently observe Sarah and help her, finding some resemblance to the late Ralph Crewe. It is also later on that it is revealed that the Indian Gentleman is a friend of Ralph Crewe, and wishes to adopt Sarah and take care of her.

[edit] Daimos

At this point I got kinda got sick of all the anime being shown and so I was either watching less or playing the PSone. From what I can remember, Daimos is about a race of people with angelic wings who were driven away from their planet. They came to Earth where generic shonen main character controls a giant robot who fights Godzilla-esque monsters. Then again, I may be wrong but I never liked the anime so I don't really know much about it. Still, it gets a mention here for being an unknown "Japan-only" anime...
