A yeti with a love for bone carvings. Stronger than a gigas... but a bit unruly.

Game description

Umaro is a playable character in Final Fantasy VI. He is a Yeti who lives deep in the mines of Narshe, uses primitive stone tools, and answers only to Mog. He is an optional character who can only be recruited in the World of Ruin. He is capable of limited speech.

Profile

Umaro is a giant white Yeti. He is the largest of the party, and has frightening features. Despite this, Mog seems to know how to control him, as Umaro will listen to him.

FFVI Android Umaro Joins

Umaro joins the party.

The player first encounters Umaro in the World of Balance when he pokes his head out of a part of the mine unreachable at this point. A (drunken) resident of Narshe even says he "saw some Moogles playing with a Yeti!" After acquiring Valigarmanda in the World of Ruin the party can enter the Yeti's Cave. When they take his precious stone (the magicite Midgardsormr), he gets angry and challenges the party to a fight. If the player wins, Umaro lets the party pass. If Mog is in the party, he will order Umaro to join.

In the ending, Umaro crushes some rocks to open up a passage. He is seen next to Gogo on the airship near the end of the credits.

Spoilers end here.

Gameplay

FF6 iOS Umaro Sprites

Before Umaro joins as a party member, he must be fought as a boss. As a party member, Umaro is a Berserker, and has the highest HP, strength and defense in the game, but his magic stats are sub-par. As a Berserker Umaro cannot be given commands, but the player can influence his attacks through his Relics. Umaro has no Desperation Attack because he doesn't have an Attack command. He cannot learn any magic.

Equipment

Umaro cannot equip any equipment other than the Bone Club and Snow Scarf, both of which are already pre-equipped and neither of them can be removed from him. Luckily, the player can customize Umaro's Relics, three of which (listed below) are exclusive to him. When the player chooses to unequip all weapons and armor at the airship, Umaro's relics will not be removed.

  • If he is equipped with the Berserker Ring, he can toss a random party member at an enemy for greater damage than his normal attack; precedence goes to characters who are asleep or Confused, as throwing them will remove the statuses; Umaro will also nullify Lightning and absorb Fire damage.
  • If Umaro is equipped with the Blizzard Orb, he will be able to use an attack called Snowstorm, an Ice-elemental attack that hits all enemies; Umaro will also nullify Fire and absorb Ice damage.
  • The Bone Wrist relic boosts all his attributes by 5 (Strength, Speed, Stamina, Magic) and Defense, Evasion, Magic Defense, Magic Evasion by 10; it also increases HP and Strength by 50%, damage and magic damage by 25%, and attacks become unblockable.

If Umaro is equipped with both Berserker Ring and Blizzard Orb, he will acquire two new abilities, making his actions less monotonous, plus he will nullify Lightning attacks and absorb both Fire and Ice attacks.

Most characters don't really benefit from the Gauntlet relic, because it empowers whatever weapon they're holding while sacrificing their ability to hold a weapon or shield in their other hand. Because Umaro only holds a single Bone Club, he has no secondary item to sacrifice and the Gauntlet is a good relic he can equip.

Abilities

Umaro is unique in that when he attacks he has four different attacks he can use: a standard Attack, Tackle (body slam a single target), Hurl (throws a character at one enemy target, if equipped with the Berserker Ring), and a Snowstorm (ice-elemental attack on all enemy targets, if equipped with Blizzard Orb). The chance he'll use each attack is:

Relic Attack Tackle Hurl Snowstorm
None 62% (159/255) 38% (96/255)
Berserker Ring 37% (95/255) 25% (64/255) 38% (96/255)
Blizzard Orb 37% (95/255) 25% (64/255) 38% (96/255)
Berserker Ring
Blizzard Orb
25% (63/255) 25% (64/255) 25% (64/255) 25% (64/255)

Boss

Yeti-ffvi-ios

Umaro is fought as Yeti in the Yeti's Cave in the World of Ruin. Afterward, if Mog is in the party, he will join the party.

Additionally, a second dummied entry for Umaro can be found within the files, weaker than the Yeti fought in the game.

Creation and development

Umaro was originally supposed to be a random encounter on the world map and could only be caught with a bait. Hidden game data suggests Umaro was at some point intended to be able to be encountered in the World of Balance, as an unused battle complete with stats and a simple AI script exists within the game's data.

According to Hironobu Sakaguchi, Umaro has a strong sense of honor and feels like he owes a debt to Mog, because Mog shared some food with him when he had collapsed from exhaustion.[1]

Musical themes

Template:Listen Umaro's theme is named after him, and is the theme played in his mine. It is mixed into the ending.

Etymology

Umaro's name is a portmanteau of the Japanese term for cryptids, UMA (Unidentified Mysterious Animal), and the Japanese suffix "maru".

He is also known as Yeti. The Yeti or Abominable Snowman is an ape-like cryptid taller than an average human that is said to inhabit the Himalayan region of Nepal and Tibet.

Trivia

  • Umaro's Tent sprite in the iOS version is an igloo.
  • Umaro is the first playable Berserker in the Final Fantasy series who is permanently in a berserk state.
  • Umaro has a placement on the Blackjack, but it can only be seen by hacking Umaro into the party or using the Airship glitch. He uses the same line as the one when he's inside the Falcon.
