An intriguing sorceress hailing from the future, she wields time-manipulating magic with ease.

Dissidia 012 description

A powerful sorceress possessing a deep-seated rage and the ability to control space and time.

Dissidia Final Fantasy description

Ultimecia is a warrior of Chaos in Dissidia Final Fantasy and Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy. She also appears in Dissidia Final Fantasy NT and its arcade version. A sorceress with the power to control time, she attacks with magically animated swords and axes in addition to casting traditional spells. Along with the Emperor, Ultimecia schemes to take control of the world from both Chaos and Cosmos and reign over existence in their place. She appears to her nemesis, Squall, disguised as Cosmos to manipulate him, both to test his resolve to face her and to keep him separated from his friends.

While Squall is her nemesis in the original Dissidia Final Fantasy, her main rival in the 012 storyline is Tifa whose positive outlook both intrigues and repulses Ultimecia to the point of wanting it destroyed.

Profile

Appearance

Dissidia Final Fantasy and Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy

Ultimecia's design is unchanged from her original appearance in Final Fantasy VIII. She dons a revealing red gown with a plunging neckline tapered just below the navel. A black fur ruffle extends along the neckline and merges with her wings. Her feet and hands bear violet talons and she has long silver hair, some of which is pulled up into two red-tipped "horns".

Ultimecia's first alternate outfit, "Onyx Dress", colors her dress black and beige while her claws turn red. This may allude to Adel (FF8 Adel), a sorceress Ultimecia possesses in Final Fantasy VIII.

Ultimecia's second alternate outfit, "Edea's Corpse", is Sorceress Edea while under Ultimecia's control. She wears a skin-tight dress with a plunging neckline and a fur ruffle around her shoulders. It is primarily black with a purple gradient along the bottom. A shell-themed headpiece adorned with jewels sits over her left temple with gold veins stretching over her cheek to her yellow eyes.

Ultimecia's manikin version, Transient Witch, is purplish-pink.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT

Default
  • Phantasmal Garment I - Default coloration. An updated version of her original appearance in Final Fantasy VIII and the Dissidia series. The magenta tips on her horned hair are now metallic and her aquamarine tattoos/body paint under her chest are darker than they were in the PSP games, now closer in resemblance to her artwork by Tetsuya Nomura.
  • Phantasmal Garment II - 1st alternate coloration. An updated version of her "Onyx Dress" attire from the PSP games with the white parts now darker. The feathered details of the lowest part of her gown are now black instead of white. Based on Sorceress Adel's color scheme from Final Fantasy VIII.
  • Phantasmal Garment III - 2nd alternate coloration. Ultimecia's gown is navy blue with purple gradients. Her fur ruffle and her wings are light gray, with the tips of the wings purple. Her hair ornaments are black with her horn ornament dark purple with yellow accents. Based off her "Onyx Dress" form while in EX mode.
1st Alternate Costume
  • Edea's Corpse I - Default coloration. An updated version of her costume in Dissidia 012, and Edea's appearance as a sorceress while possessed by Ultimecia in Final Fantasy VIII. Ultimecia wears Edea's dress with the fur ruffles around her shoulders more detailed and fuller, and she wears black heels. She no longer junctions with Griever due to EX Mode being reworked into EX Skill.
  • Edea's Corpse II - 1st alternate coloration. Recolors her dress a gradient of gold to white, the fur ruffles white, and the frills on the end of the dress black with a purple arrow-shape design.
  • Edea's Corpse III - 2nd alternate coloration. Recolors her dress a gradient of dark rose to black, the fur ruffles black, and the frills on the end of the dress black with a red arrow-shape design. In a livestream the developers have referred to this color scheme as "raspberry".
Weapons

Ultimecia throws projectiles that she conjures:

  • Witching Hour - Default weapons. Ultimecia never wielded these weapons in Final Fantasy VIII. They take the form of a sword, an axe, an arrow, and a spear. The swords are red, the spears blue, the axes green, and the arrows purple. Their designs are royal with an ornate flair.
  • Looking Glass - 1st alternate weapons. The sword, arrow and axe resemble crystalline spikes that are primarily green, while the spear has a patterned bladed tip with a thin handle covered with a sharp guard at the base. Their designs are spiked with crystal motifs.
  • Grandeur - 2nd alternate weapons. The arms are golden with more elongated spikes, almost electrical-like across each weapon.
  • Nightmare - 3rd alternate weapons. The arms take on Griever in their designs. The blades are crimson with the sword and arrow featuring Griever's wings, while the axe and spear incorporate his profile. The axe has Griever's side and long tail wrapped around the handle, and his extended wings serve as the axe blade. The spear features Griever's front profile at the top, and his extended horns give off the appearance of a trident.

None of Ultimecia's weapons have appeared in the Final Fantasy series prior, and are original for the Dissidia series. The French naming and designs of her arms refer to her lavish sense of in Final Fantasy VIII, and the Nightmare alludes to her junctioning herself with Griever in the final battle in Final Fantasy VIII, along with her EX Mode form in the PSP games.

Ultimecia's default player name is Nameless Sorceress, and her manikin counterpart is renamed Otherworldly Witch.

Personality

Template:See Also

Time waits for no one. You can grab it, but it flies as soon as you loosen your grip. To condense and to bind—this is all I desire!

Ultimecia

Ultimecia is cruel, sadistic, manipulative and power-hungry. She wills to become a living god and rule over the universe rather than serve a victorious Chaos, but pursues her goals in secret. The heroes' positive emotions repulse her, and she especially abhors Tifa for her optimistic outlook. Ultimecia thinks she can spot a weakness in Squall who prefers to work alone, and seeks to exploit it and keep him separated from the other heroes, wishing to manipulate him to believe solitude is the way to his Crystal. Similar to Kefka she is later painted in a more tragic light : if she is beaten by a character besides Squall in Shade Impulse during the first Dissidia she asks asking if the victor can still remember their childhood as well as the sensations, words and feelings associated with it, before stating that time cannot wait regardless of how one is to hold on due to it always "escaping." This implies that another reason she desires time compression besides a desire for revenge is to go back to the one time she felt happiness.

Treachery of the Gods

Dissidia012UltimeciaTifa

Ultimecia ambushing Tifa during their battle.

Before the twelfth cycle of war, Ultimecia assisted Kefka Palazzo in fighting the Warrior of Light and Lightning, although he requested she does not assist him.

Finding Tifa on her own, Ultimecia fights her out of curiosity as to whether she could break the girl's cheerful outlook. Using her time powers to put a Transient Witch in her place when Tifa executes a death blow, Ultimecia is about to kill her from behind while Kain appears. Ultimecia takes her leave, revealing Kain's seemingly treacherous actions to Tifa. Ultimecia later reappears with Garland, Kefka, Cloud of Darkness, and the Emperor, intending to stop Tifa, Lightning, Vaan, Laguna, and Yuna from sealing the rift.

Light to All

Squall and Cosmos

Ultimecia appears to Squall as Cosmos.

Ultimecia taunts Kuja as a ruse to get him to plot against Zidane. She appears to Squall disguised as Cosmos, discussing his choice to travel alone in his search for the Crystal. She tells Squall he must confront his true opponent alone. Garland questions her actions, but Ultimecia says she knows of his ties to Chaos, and asks him to assist her in her plan separate from the plans of the Emperor.

As the Warrior of Light searches for his Crystal he passes through Ultimecia's castle and she confronts him. Ultimecia ridicules his resolve to find the Crystals, claiming they are the fabrications of a fallen goddess. The Warrior refuses to listen and the two do battle. Though the Warrior is victorious, Ultimecia continues to mock him, telling him his comrades are losing faith in their goal and some have gone off on their own. Later, Ultimecia and the Emperor attempt to persuade Sephiroth to join their plan, but he refuses, and the three are interrupted by Bartz. Bartz flees, and Ultimecia suggests they send Exdeath to pursue him.

Ultimeciatimestop

Ultimecia does battle with Squall.

Ultimecia appears before Squall as Cosmos again and reveals her disguise. Ultimecia congratulates Squall on what she calls his ruthless, selfish heart, having abandoned his friends and traveled alone regardless of their safety. Ultimecia orders Squall to attack her and show her the strength of his pride, but Squall puts down his gunblade and silently refuses. Ultimecia retreats to her castle and waits for Squall to confront her. He arrives, and Ultimecia summons Garland to team up with her. Zidane tackles Garland and battles him leaving Squall to fight Ultimecia. Squall prevails and claims his Crystal while Ultimecia fades away. She later appears alongside the Emperor and engages Firion in battle, both telling Firion his wish to end the war is futile. Firion defeats Ultimecia, but she returns as proof of what she and the Emperor call the futility of Firion's dream.

Ultimecia struck down

Ultimecia is struck down.

After Cosmos's death Ultimecia speaks to the Cloud of Darkness about Shinryu awakening. Ultimecia tells the Cloud of Darkness that previously Shinryu would awaken whenever the cycle of war ended to "purify" World B, setting the stage for the war to begin anew. However, she senses the Emperor's plan to kill Cosmos for good may have succeeded and Ultimecia has no intentions to serve Chaos along with her time compression scheme. Squall arrives at Ultimecia's castle where she reveals her plan to him. He vows to stop her, and Ultimecia accuses him of being the same as her, wishing to create an ideal world, but is defeated once again, fading away.

Official Quests

Ultimecia appears in "Kain's Quest 012: A Dragoon's Betrayal" where she taunts Kain about his decision to strike down friend and foe alike. She asks what he was speaking to Golbez about, but Kain refuses to answer, and the two fight. Ultimecia understands the strength that felled the other warriors of Cosmos, and departs, saying the cycle has become interesting.

Rebirth of the cycles

Template:Sideicon Ultimecia returns to World B, having been summoned by Spiritus as one of his champions to help generate battle energy. Ultimecia joins Spiritus's other champions when he reaches out to Materia. Like most of the other warriors, Ultimecia is disinterested in this new cycle and wishes to leave.

Ultimecia lingers around the Pandaemonium gateway when Kefka drags both Exdeath and Tidus into it with him. Kefka tries to persuade Exdeath and Ultimecia into destroying the world. Ultimecia speculates it would release enough energy to form an exit, but is interrupted by Firion and Shantotto, the latter of whom riles Ultimecia during a verbal argument and a battle ensues.

Ultimecia senses the gateway has formed, but is waylayed by Shantotto's magic. Ultimecia watches as Materia's warriors attempt to use the gateway only to be denied entry by a planesgorger. They are further sidetracked by Jecht while Firion and Tidus enter the Besaid gateway. Ultimecia, Exdeath, and Kefka give chase and another fight ensues, however, the planesgorgers are already devouring this realm and Ultimecia decides to retreat.

When the two gods decide to unite and stage a final clash, Ultimecia faces off against Terra by hounding her with her magic. Y'shtola comes to her defense. Ultimecia combines her magic with the Cloud of Darkness to create a powerful spell but the plan is thwarted by Shantotto. Once Shinryu awakens and descends upon the battlefield, Ultimecia and the others turn their attacks against him, and after a long battle best him. With the threat eliminated, Ultimecia departs to her homeworld after bestowing her essence in crystal form for Spiritus to use in her place.

Spoilers end here.

Gameplay

Dissidia Final Fantasy and Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy

Ultimecia is a Sorcerous Fusileer. Her attacks are themed around sorceress' knights and consist of various magical bolts to bombard enemies. Ultimecia's Bravery attacks have two forms, one where the player taps Circle, and one where the player holds the button to change the attack's effects. She can attack while moving, as her attacks revolve around aerial zone control. As a downside Ultimecia has slow ground movement and her HP attacks require charging. Close-ranged fighters, like Warrior of Light and Tidus, have a great advantage against her, as all of Ultimecia's attacks are long-ranged and she has limited melee capabilities.

Boss

In Dissidia Final Fantasy Ultimecia is fought in Destiny Odyssey I, II, VIII, Shade Impulse, Distant Glory, and Inward Chaos.

In Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, she is fought in Ally, An Undocumented Battle, Seeds of Hope, Resolve for Seclusion, Champions of her Will, and Conclusion of the Cycle chapters of Story Mode.

EX Mode

Ultimecia's EX Mode.

Ultimecia's EX Mode is Junction Griever, a variation of her hybrid junction form from Final Fantasy VIII. She gains "Time Crush", usable by holding Right shoulder button and Square. The attack has a long charge time, but if successful stuns and traps the opponent for several seconds. The only way to escape is for the paralyzed character to initiate EX Mode. If Time Crush is used a second time on an opponent already paralyzed, they are freed. The player can begin charging Time Crush again while the opponent is paralyzed, and it will execute successfully as long as it activates once the first Time Crush wears off.

Ultimecia's EX Burst is Time Compression. She freezes her opponent in place and conjures a swarm of magic bolts to bombard them. The EX Burst uses a slight variation on the mechanics as Squall's Renzokuken, requiring the player to press Circle in time with icons on a power meter to increase the damage done by the magic bolts as they bombard the opponent. The finishing blow is an explosion called Sorceress Heart, paralleling the name of Squall's finishing blow, Lion Heart.

Equipment

Ultimecia can equip Daggers, Rods, Staves, Instruments, Bangles, Hats, Hairpins, Clothing, and Robes. In Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, Ultimecia can also equip Thrown Weapons and Headbands.

Allusions

  • Ultimecia's exclusive weapons are named after some of Rinoa Heartilly's weapons from Final Fantasy VIII. Ultimecia's line to Squall before their battle, "Shall we dance?", is similar to what Rinoa said to Squall prior to the Final Fantasy VIII ballroom scene.
  • In Shade Impulse, Ultimecia's lines when defeated by a character other than Squall are taken from her lines during the final battle of Final Fantasy VIII.
  • One of Ultimecia's lines when losing is "I...can't...disappear just yet", her final line in Final Fantasy VIII. Her line when using Hell's Judgment in Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, "Absolute denial. End of existence" paraphrases what she says when the final battle begins in Final Fantasy VIII, "Time shall compress. All existence denied". Her victory exclaim "Reality is harsh, is it not?" is a direct translation of what Ultimecia (possessing Edea) says during her inauguration speech to the people in Deling City. In the English release of Final Fantasy VIII this line was translated as "This is reality, no one can help you".
  • The effect behind Ultimecia assuming Cosmos's form is similar to the scene in Final Fantasy VIII when Ultimecia appears transparent while possessing Rinoa Heartilly. It refers to Ultimecia posing as Edea, who was good but became evil under Ultimecia's control.
