- "Everything is an illusion. Your hopes, your friends, your life itself - Shall fade."
- —Ultimecia
Ultimecia is one of the villains fighting for the side of Chaos in Dissidia Final Fantasy. A sorceress possessing the power to control time. Her magical strength is immense, and she attacks with magically animated swords and axes, in addition to wielding traditional spells. Along with the Emperor, Ultimecia schemes to take control of the world from both Chaos and Cosmos, and reign over existence in their place. She appears to her enemy Squall disguised as Cosmos in order to manipulate him, both to test his resolve to face her and to keep him separate from his friends.

[edit] Attire
Ultimecia's design is virtually unchanged from her original appearance from Final Fantasy VIII. She dons a revealing, skin tight red satin ballgown with a plunging neckline tapered just below the navel. A black fur ruffle travels the edge of the bodice from abdomen to travel along the collar, the ruffle is largest behind the neck, resting over her shoulders and covering the junction of her black feathered wings (it is unknown wether the ruffle is attached to her wings or just rests upon them). The hemline extends to drag along the floor behind her, the edge is stained black either out of design or out of exposure to magics and/or terrain.
Red long-blouse sleeves join with her taloned hands, which are stained purple in a similar way to the dress. The shoulders are padded to extend just beyond her hip-line. Exposed skin (face, torso and legs) are moderately tattooed with lined patterns that differ slightly from the ones presented in Final Fantasy VIII. Jewelery is present with a gold necklace around her neck line, earrings and hair jewelery amongst a headdress designed to pull her hair up to resemble horns while silver bangs are left free to hang down past her hip as they frame her face. The most striking feature of which are her yellow eyes set amongst red eye shadow, the aforementioned tattoos and red lipstick. She wears no footwear, instead walking (or perhaps flying) barefoot with feet stained in a similar way to the hem of her dress. Her toes are taloned like her hands.
Her secondary attire features a black color swap for the gown with a creamy beige billowy hem from the knees down, reminiscent of Sorceress Edea's attire. While the headdress remains the same the fur ruffle along her dress is now also the same colour as the hem and her hands are now red instead of purple. The colour swap also affects her EX Mode; with Griever's fur becoming lighter, his mane now also creamy beige and his wing feathers becoming black. His horns and wing claw also turn metallic silver instead of their usual red. Her Manikin version, Transient Witch, is pink.
She holds Squall's crystal; a unique silver crystal that looks like a feathered wing, a recurring theme in Final Fantasy VIII. Its design also hosts a shape of a Gunblade when carefully looked at.
[edit] Story
[edit] Prologue
When the forces of Chaos and Cosmos face each other over the gap between Order's Sanctuary and the Edge of Madness Ultimecia targets Terra, continuously harassing her with magic attacks that, although initially blocked by her barrier, forced Terra into a trap set by The Emperor. The heroine survived however.
After the end of the initial battle—and while Cosmos gathers her forces—Ultimecia and The Emperor plan on seizing the crystals, and wonder whether or not this would impede Cosmos' resurrection come her defeat.
[edit] Destiny Odyssey
Ultimecia taunts Kuja into enacting his own agenda to prove himself the same, if not better, than the other agents of Chaos by capturing Zidane, this in turn also means that he'd be attacking Bartz as well; Zidane's quest partner. Together the two represented Squall's support, without them meant that Squall would be easier to deal with.
Ultimecia appears to Squall disguised as Cosmos, discussing his choice to travel alone in search of the Crystals. She then encourages him to continue alone. After this, she continues to plot this time with Garland over the death of Cosmos and the rise of Shinryu, revealing to him that she knows his ties to Chaos. However, after proposing a partnership, he refuses her due to her freely manipulating people without qualms; as seen with Kuja. Despite their disagreements, however, they still enact upon the trap they were setting against Squall.
Ultimecia appears before the Warrior of Light, and ridicules him for searching for the crystals. However, the Warrior remains undaunted, and as a result, Ultimecia battles him. After the battle, Ultimecia states that the Warrior is fighting for a lost cause, and that his friends are losing sight of their true goals, that the warriors of Cosmos were on the verge of failure, before teleporting away.
When Bartz becomes caught in a trap intended for Zidane (by Kuja) he oversees Ultimecia, along with The Emperor, attempting to persuade Sephiroth to join their cause against the villains longing for and causing 'meaningless destruction'. The pair do not succeed in persuading him, but before Ultimecia can convince him otherwise they sense Bartz watching them, and the latter bids a hasty retreat. Instead of attacking him, she and The Emperor plot to use him as a way to find Exdeath.
Eventually, she reveals herself to Squall; discarding her Cosmos guise and applauds his determination to continue alone, implying that his reasons for fighting alone originated from his cold-heartedness. While eager to fight him to see his strength, Squall doesn't indulge her due to his hesitance over what she had just said. Accepting this she teleports away, citing that she would be waiting for when he is ready.
When Squall later confronts her in the Clock Tower, claiming that his motives were more stoic. Ultimecia was accompanied by Garland, however Squall had the to fight them both but Zidane arrived to hold off Garland while Squall fought Ultimecia. While she continued to explain that things like friendships were illusions during the battle her time altering magic failed to stop him, Ultimecia was beaten. After a short conversation with Squall, she fades away from the Clock Tower.
Ultimecia later appears alongside The Emperor and engages Firion in battle after he claimed that he would end the fighting. Thinking he had defeated her, Firion was surprised when she reappeared in front of him. Ultimecia tells Firion that, due to the endless battle being a product of the gods, he lacks the power to stop the fight between Chaos and Cosmos. She then teleports away with The Emperor.
[edit] Shade Impulse
After the death of Cosmos, Ultimecia is seen in conversation with the Cloud of Darkness about how Shinryuu would soon reset the world and how they would begin the battle all over again. She notes however that something felt different this time, that perhaps The Emperor's plan to stop the continuing war was in fruition.
When the warriors of Cosmos embark to defeat Chaos, Squall confronts Ultimecia in her castle's Clock Tower once again. Ultimecia tells Squall that Cosmos' final wish was fulfilled upon her death with Chaos fated to follow as well, revealing her own intent to create a world of compressed time where she would be able to exist eternally. Squall however, wishing to fulfill the promise he made with the person waiting for him back home, engages her in combat to stop her attempts and emerges victorious. Though clinging on to life in vain, Squall strikes her down before she could compress time again, fading away in a cloud of purple smoke with an anguished cry.
[edit] Battle
- See also: Ultimecia/Dissidia/Quotes.
In battle, Ultimecia is described as a Sorcerous Fusileer. Her attacks have the longest ranges in the game, and allow her to bombard enemies with magical projectiles themed around Sorceress Knights. She can attack while moving as well, and her attacks can be charged to alter their effects. For Chase Sequences, Ultimecia attacks with a simple swipe and shoots magic bullets if charged. As a downside, Ultimecia has slow ground movement almost as slow as Exdeath, but her attack ranges make up for it. Make sure that close-combat characters (such as Tidus or the Warrior of Light) remain at a safe distance from her; otherwise, Ultimecia will essentially be defenseless.

Ultimecia is fought in Destiny Odyssey I, II, and VIII, Shade Impulse, Distant Glory, and Inward Chaos.

[edit] EX Mode
Ultimecia's EX Mode is called Junction Griever, a variation of her hybrid junction form with Griever from Final Fantasy VIII, but altered to be more human in appearance. While in EX Mode, Ultimecia's health will regenerate over time. In addition, she has access to the Time Crush attack, which can freeze an opponent for a period of time. This attack can be executed by pressing R and
.
Her EX Burst is the utilization of Time Compression. She freezes her opponent in place and can then summon a horde of magic beams. This EX Burst uses the same mechanics as Squall's Renzokuken, requiring the player to press
in time with icons on a power meter to land up to twelve hits. The finishing blow is an explosion called "Sorceress Heart".
[edit] Equipment
Ultimecia can equip the following: Daggers, Rods, Staves, Instruments, Bangles, Hats, Hairpins, Clothing, and Robes.

[edit] Allusions
- Ultimecia's exclusive weapons are named after some of Rinoa Heartilly's weapons from Final Fantasy VIII. This may be intended as a nod to the popular, but disproven as of the Ultimania, fan theory that Ultimecia is a future incarnation of Rinoa. The description for the object needed for her ultimate weapon, Gears of Time, says "Once upon a time, we could innocently believe in the future... Those days are gone forever". The theory that Rinoa is Ultimecia states that Rinoa was driven mad by the death of Squall far into the future, causing her to pursue a way to reunite with him via Time Compression. Ultimecia's line to Squall before their battle, "Shall we dance?", is also similar to what Rinoa said to Squall prior to Final Fantasy VIII's ballroom scene.
- The name of Ultimecia's EX Burst references her goal in Final Fantasy VIII, Time Compression. The finishing blow "Sorceress Heart" parallels the name of Squall's finishing blow "Lion Heart".
- In Shade Impulse, Ultimecia says lines that reference events and situations that occur in Final Fantasy VIII, as well as lines she speaks during the battle against her final form, should the player defeat her with anyone other than Squall.
- When Ultimecia loses a battle she says the words: “I…can’t…disappear just yet.” These are the final words she spoke in Final Fantasy VIII."I will deny all you stand for,” “Why stand in the way of a witch?” and “Reality is harsh, is it not?," are also similar to lines or phrases that she says in Final Fantasy VIII.
- As Ultimecia fades away she is surrounded by purple smoke. This is similar to how she faded away at the end of Final Fantasy VIII.
- The effect behind Ultimecia assuming Cosmos' form is similar to the scene in Final Fantasy VIII when Ultimecia appears transparent while possessing Rinoa Heartilly.
- Ultimecia's HP attacks are all named attacks possessed by her during the four final battles in Final Fantasy VIII.
- When using Great Attractor the planet Ultimecia generates is the planet of Final Fantasy VIII
- Whereas most character's EX Modes are based on their ultimate forms or weapons, Ultimecia's EX Mode is actually based on her penultimate form as opposed to her true ultimate form. She shares this trait with one other follower of Chaos, Exdeath.
- When using Sorceress Heart, Ultimecia assumes the same pose as her ultimate form.
- Ultimecia's victory pose is similar to pose she strikes at the end of her first form in Final Fantasy VIII.
- Ultimecia's intro line to Squall, "You do not have a place here", is similar to a line Edea says to Squall at the end of Final Fantasy VIII, "You do not belong here."
[edit] Trivia
- Ultimecia is one of two villains to execute her EX Burst in an FMV while not in EX Mode. She does this while fighting Squall in Destiny Odyssey VIII. The Cloud of Darkness is the other.
- Ultimecia is the only villain to be struck down in an FMV.
- Ultimecia and Cloud of Darkness are the only female primary villains in the first ten games. It should be noted, however, that Cloud of Darkness is considered a genderless being, only taking on the form of a woman out of choosing.
- Ultimecia's Apocalypse HP attack more resembles her "Hell's Judgment" attack from Final Fantasy VIII than her "Apocalypse" attack from that same game.
- The affected accent that is evident in the NA release of Final Fantasy VIII is not heard in Dissidia Final Fantasy.
- When fighting with Zidane, Ultimecia will say, "I wonder if you can dance with me." Zidane remarks, "What a scary-looking lady."
- Although Ultimecia has wings in both her normal mode and EX Mode, she cannot glide. While using Time Crush Ultimecia will flap her wings to stay elevated, but cannot glide normally any other time.
