After separating from Vaan, Tifa and Lightning, Laguna is using his map to find his way back to Order's Sanctuary, but decides to take a side trip to gather more intelligence on the area. Proceeding through a series of gateways together, eventually Vaan goes ahead and the Stigma of Chaos vanishes, leaving Laguna lost as to where to go. Wandering into the World of Darkness, he finds the Cloud of Darkness, who attacks him. After gaining an advantage he becomes momentarily distracted by her revealing appearance, and is overcome by a leg cramp. As she mocks his demeanor and Cosmos' choice of him as a warrior, Laguna agrees with her that he isn't cut out to serve a goddess. Laguna tells the Cloud of Darkness he doesn't serve Cosmos, and only fights for her to try and find a way home and save the world.
When Laguna remarks on the manikins that have appeared, the Cloud of Darkness tells him the manikins are a foreign presence that upsets the balance of the world, and that they cross into this world from a portal. Laguna asks why she would reveal this to him, and the Cloud of Darkness explains that an endless stream of manikins emerges from portal, and to seek to close it would be a suicide mission - thus, she is intrigued by what Laguna will do with this knowledge. She vanishes, and Laguna continues on to find the others and inform them of what he has learned.
As in the first gateway, the four enemies present can be chained together by using a Cross Chain at C4. However if the player only wants to get the treasure and move on, they only need to face a single enemy to do so.
This Gateway offers a chance to make a large amount of KP, as the six enemies can all be chained by using a Cross Chain or Multichain at D2. If the player found the KP Gambler in a chest near the Great Forest Gateway, they can use it before starting the chain to potentially triple their winnings, allowing up to 108 KP to be won. However, KP Gambler will drop the player's winnings to 0 if they fail the KP Chance in a battle. An easy fix is to purchase a KP Switch from the Moogle nearby, making the KP Chance change to merely winning the battle and ensuring KP Gambler cannot backfire.
Assist Character - Vaan
Vaan: What's it now? Get lost again? Laguna: Ah! Th-that's not it! You should trust me some more, Vaan. Vaan: What else is new? It's not like I'd be surprised if that were the case.
The player can find one of their first summonstones here, Carbuncle, so acquiring it is highly advised. When the player moves Laguna to E4, a scene occurs where Vaan vanishes and is no longer available as an Assist, so fighting any enemies they wish to defeat should be done beforehand if they want to use their Assist in those battles. A Cross Chain at C3 will chain all enemies except for the Normal Battle Piece at E4.
