The Torna Canal is a location in Final Fantasy V. It is a water canal that connects the Wind Shrine and Tule with Walse. It is only visitable in Bartz's world.

History[]

FFV Android Karlabos's Whirlpool

The party stuck at the whirlpool possessed by Karlabos.

The Torna Canal was built by Zok.[1] After the wind crystal shattered, the beasts in the canal multiplied rapidly, making the canal more dangerous.[2]

Needing to cross it to reach Walse, Lenna Charlotte Tycoon asked Zok for the key, but he declined at first, fearing for her safety. After seeing her determination, Zok gave the key to Bartz Klauser and urged to them to go.[2]

In the canal, the party encounters a whirlpool, the home of the sealed monster Karlabos. Even after defeating the monster, Faris Scherwiz's companion Syldra could not escape the whirlpool and was lost, leading the party to the Ship Graveyard.

Geography[]

FFV Android Torna Canal - Bartz's World

World map.

The Torna Canal passes through a continent in between Tule and Walse. Oceans are either side of the canal, and to the east of the canal (near Walse) is the Ship Graveyard. Along the canal are mountains.

Gameplay[]

Torna Canal is traversed after completing the Wind Shrine, and a key must be acquired from Zok at Tule to access it. It is traversed similar to a typical dungeon, except traveled by boat. Octokraken and Sucker enemies are fought along the way, and the boss Karlabos is fought at the end.

Musical themes[]

Although it is a water canal, "Dungeon" (ダンジョン, Danjon?) can be heard in this location as its background music.

Other appearances[]

Etymology[]

The Japanese spelling of Torna, (トルナ, toruna?), is a semordnilap of (ナルト, naruto?), meaning whirlpool, alluding to the whirlpool seen at the end of the area.
