Tonberry (Final Fantasy VII)

The Tonberry of Final Fantasy VII can is fought in the seventh round Gold Saucer Battle Square when the saucer reopens in Part 2. It is programmed to be encountered in the Reunion area of Northern Cave, but since the player cannot control a character in this area and the encounters there are automatically disabled, the player cannot fight it there.

Its counterpart, the Master Tonberry, is found within the final dungeon areas of the Northern Cave. Because Tonberry is exclusive to the Battle Square, it will never drop the Phoenix Down it has or yield EXP, AP or gil.

BattleEdit

The Tonberry does not attack until it gets close enough, in which case it instantly kills the party member with Knife. It has no weaknesses, so it can be challenging to kill before it gets close enough to use Knife.

The Tonberry can use the attack Time Damage, which deals damage depending on the amount of time in the player's timer: (hours played * 100) + minutes played, capped at 9,999 damage.

It is one of the rarest attacks in the game. Tonberry only uses it as a counterattack against the third attack (in individual turns) since Tonberry's last turn, and before the Tonberry makes its next turn. Since the Tonberry can only naturally be fought with one character, the only way to do that is to have the Slow status induced on Tonberry, the Haste status induced on the player, and a high Dexterity stat.
