Time gate

Serah and Noel, standing before a Time Gate.

In ancient times there was a mighty spell that could summon meteorites and cast them upon the heads of foes. The meteorites had crystalline cores, grown abnormally large in another spacetime. The attributes of the meteorite would differ depending on the nature of its core crystal. Some meteorites even held within them rare, otherworldly crystals knows as 'artefacts,' which in special circumstances might be used to open portals to other places—and other times.

A Time Gate (時の扉, Toki no Tobira?), more commonly called a gate (ゲート, gēto?), is a gameplay and story element from Final Fantasy XIII-2. The Time Gates are connected via the Historia Crux and by stepping into a Time Gate, one can travel through time to a specific location. In order to activate a Time Gate, one must possess the necessary artefact. Some require a specific artefact, while others can only be activated using a Wild Artefact, which is consumed when used. Time Gates can be closed with Gate Seals.

Profile[]

Serah and noel step into time gate

Noel and Serah enter the gate. Notice the writing in Etro's Script.

In a fragment entry for Chaos Crystal, it is said that Chaos Crystal is a shard of twisted time, frozen in crystal formed by spacetime singularities, and is believed to be the seed substance that causes Time Gates to manifest. Only those for whom a Time Gate is intended may pass through it, otherwise, they will be blocked upon approach. It is said that only those with an affinity for chaos may make use of the Time Gates. When a Time Gate is activated, writing in Etro Script circles the gate in a sequence of repeating letters, however, it doesn't spell out anything intelligible, merely a sequence saying: "MLFMHBPEC".

Multiple Time Gates can appear in each location, but each leads to a different world. This can allow access to the same world in several different time periods, and each one contains many different features: flora, fauna, and most importantly, storyline elements. Returning to places at different times is the key to unlocking the story, as some information and items can only be attained in certain times.

There are two types of Time Gate: golden gates, "blessed by the goddess and shine like the sun", and blue gates. Golden gates require special artefacts to open them, each gate needing a different artefact. Blue gates, however, can only be opened by using Wild Artefacts, which can be found scattered across the timeline.

Datalog[]

Time Gates appear as strange glowing portals, and each requires a specific 'artefact' to activate it. By passing through these gates and traveling outside the timeline, it is said one can eventually arrive in Valhalla.

Behind the scenes[]

A similar device, also called a time gate, was used to for time travel in Chrono Trigger, a game also created by Square Co., Ltd. (now Square Enix).

Time Gates are one of the many story elements of Final Fantasy XIII-2 referenced in "Worlds Collide", one of the game's battle themes.

The icon used to represent Time Gates on the map was previously used for Cie'th Stones in Final Fantasy XIII.
