"Bright and optimistic, Tifa always cheers up the others when they're down. But don't let her looks fool you, she can decimate almost any enemy with her fists..."
—Description

Tifa Lockhart is a female protagonist in Final Fantasy VII. She is Cloud's childhood friend from Nibelheim and a member of AVALANCHE. However, her personality is much more laid back and selfless, with a motherly streak concerning her friends and her attitude to others. However, Tifa is quick to hide her true feelings from people, as her shyness is a key aspect of her character. She is caring and loving to a fault. Tifa also owns a bar entitled Tifa's 7th Heaven, located in Sector 7 of Midgar, which also serves as a hideout for AVALANCHE. She is a Monk who was taught martial arts in Nibelheim by her master Zangan.

Tifa was born in Nibelheim, the same town where Cloud was born, twenty years before the main plotline of the game. She is out-going, lively, and quickly gains quite a lot of friends. Although she and Cloud lived very near each other, and were only a year apart, they were never that close. She and the others ignored Cloud through most of their childhood. However, one year before Cloud left Nibelheim to become a SOLDIER, Tifa made him promise to come and save her if she was ever in trouble.

Tifa's mother died when Tifa was eight years old, leaving her upset and very confused. Instead of believing that her mother was dead, Tifa believed she had gone to Mt. Nibel. Tifa headed off to Mount Nibel, and Cloud followed to keep her safe, but Tifa still fell from the rickety bridge in the mountains. Tifa's father arrived at the scene, and finding her hurt, blamed Cloud for leading her to Mt. Nibel. Upset and angry, Cloud swore to become a SOLDIER, like his idol Sephiroth.

[edit] Nibelheim Incident

Some years later, at the age of 15, Tifa is working as a tour guide in the Nibelheim mountains. Before Crisis -Final Fantasy VII- shows us that she spends her time taking martial arts lessons from Zangan and playing with her pet Kitten, who only appears in the cell phone game.

A few days before the Mako Reactor event the Turks attempt to parachute down to Mt. Nibel. Unfortunately the wind veers them off course and they land east of the Reactor. This is where they come across Tifa, who was chasing after her cat before she ran into some tough monsters. The Turks rescue Tifa and then head back to Nibelheim.

Days later, Sephiroth and a SOLDIER called Zack arrive at Nibelheim, to investigate mysterious monster attacks in the vicinity, and to check out the Mako Reactor of Mt. Nibel. As soon as the pair make their way into town, Tifa approaches Zack and asks discreet questions about SOLDIER, hoping to hear of Cloud. Upon being told it was only Sephiroth and Zack, she is dismayed. However, she faces them again, seeming to ask another question, but decides against it and runs off, causing Zack to label her as weird. During their stay, she drops hints to Zack personally and through his e-mail that she dreams of specifically having a blond-haired SOLDIER protecting her, obviously referring to Cloud.

Nevertheless, they soon hire her, now a student of Zangan, the town's martial artist master, as their guide in the mountains. However, shortly after visiting the reactor, Sephiroth discovers the horrible truth of his origins, and loses his mind.

He attacks Nibelheim, and burns the city to the ground, then heads for the Reactor at Mt. Nibel. Zack follows him into the Mako Reactor. Tifa tries to follow them inside, but a soldier—unbeknownst to her, it is Cloud—stops her. When she eventually manages to get inside, she discovers her father has been killed by Sephiroth. Enraged by her loss and declaring her hatred for Shin-Ra, she heads for the Mako Reactor core, but is struck down by Sephiroth. Cloud suddenly appears, and defeats Sephiroth despite being impaled by Sephiroth's Masamune blade, and throws him down into the reactor core. Tifa is severely wounded, and doesn't remember Cloud saving her. Zangan arrives at the reactor shortly after, and realizing Shin-Ra troops, including Professor Hojo are arriving as well, carries Tifa to safety but is unable to come back for Cloud and Zack. Zangan in turn attempts to heal Tifa, but when his spells fail to help he takes her to Midgar for medical attention.

[edit] Final Fantasy VII

Some time later, Zangan leaves Midgar and Tifa opens a bar there; Tifa's 7th Heaven, which secretly operates as a base for the anti-Shin-Ra group AVALANCHE. Tifa finds a confused and disoriented Cloud in the slums, where he claims to have completed his goal of being a SOLDIER first class. Together they complete several missions to destroy Midgar's Mako Reactors, and look back upon their time as kids. Tifa seems to have been kidnapped by the perverse mafia kingpin, Don Corneo. Cloud dresses up like a girl to be picked by Corneo instead of Tifa, and is joined by Aeris Gainsborough. The Don picks one of them depending upon the player's actions, but the three corner him. Threatened with the loss of his favorite organs, Don Corneo reveals Shin-Ra's plan to drop the Sector 7 Plate upon the Slums. Despite their best attempt to stop the destruction, Shin-ra drops the upper plate above Sector 7, effectively crushing AVALANCHE and an untold number of civilians. AVALANCHE members Jessie, Biggs and Wedge are killed, and Aeris is kidnapped.

The remains of AVALANCHE fights their way up the Shin-Ra Building, to rescue Aeris. Their mission is a failure, and the party is captured by Shin-Ra. But then, the guards are all murdered in a massacre performed by an unknown assailant. When viewing the dead body of President Shinra, the Masamune sword is spotted inside the corpse, it is clear that Sephiroth has returned, and then the party begins to follow him in order to get revenge for Nibelheim.

Later in Kalm. Cloud decides to tell his unknowing friends the story of his past and Sephiroth, but Tifa is troubled by what she hears. A lot of things he is saying don't match up to what actually happened, and there are a lot of holes in his story. But she keeps her worries to herself.

When they arrive at Nibelheim, they discover that the town has been rebuilt, and the villagers (who are really actors hired by Shin-Ra to cover up the Sephiroth incident) do not remember Cloud or Tifa ever living there.

It is possible for Tifa to be Cloud's date at the Gold Saucer. However, this depends upon the player's actions.

Inside the Northern Crater, Cloud is forced by Sephiroth to give him the Black Materia, and falls into the Lifestream. Tifa is captured, along with Barret, by Rufus Shinra. They are both brought to Junon, where they are to be executed as scapegoats to show that Shin-Ra is still in control as Meteor looms in the sky. Tifa is thrown into a gas chamber, while Barret is rescued by the other party members hidden in the crowd. While gas seeps into the chamber, Tifa breaks out of her restraints. Sapphire WEAPON then attacks, blasting a hole in the gas chamber, which saves her life. Running to escape the Shin-Ra forces, she climbs up onto the Sister Ray. Scarlet confronts Tifa, and the two girls descend into a catfight. The Highwind then appears below the cannon. Tifa jumps down to the airship and safety from Shin-Ra. She is elected temporary leader of the party while Cloud is gone.

Cloud is later found in Mideel, suffering from an overdose of Mako. Tifa stays behind to watch over Cloud, and Cid is elected leader. Later, the friends decide to check up on Cloud, who is not showing any signs of improvement. However, the Ultimate Weapon suddenly appears, and Mideel is swallowed by the Lifestream, into which Tifa and Cloud fall.

Tifa has now entered Cloud's mind, and together they work through Cloud's painful memories. They uncover the truth about the Nibelheim incident, and bring Cloud back. After their assault on Midgar, the party splits up to visit their families before the possible one-way trip into the Northern Crater to defeat Sephiroth. But Cloud and Tifa have no place to go, Nibelheim being filled with Shin-Ra actors. The spend the night together below the Highwind, reflecting on their past and future. Most of what occurs is left to the player's imagination. When the other playable characters are revealed to have stayed on board and watched the whole time, Tifa is clearly embarrassed.

After the ultimate defeat of Sephiroth, Cloud is stuck on a ledge, and Tifa tries to rescue him. They are ultimately saved by Cait Sith, and escape in Cid's Airship. Meteor, summoned by Sephiroth, looms closer to the earth, but a white light, which is Holy appears and tries to stop Meteor. It fails, however, and Meteor destroys Midgar. Suddenly, the Lifestream appears, and stops Meteor, and the last thing seen before the credits is Aeris' face.

[edit] Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

"So which is it, a memory or us?"
—Tifa to Cloud in Advent Children

Tifa plays a large role in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, serving as Cloud's emotional support, as well as returning as a capable fighter. She once again runs a bar called Seventh Heaven, this time rebuilt in Edge. It seems to be little used now, as Tifa was simply cleaning glasses in between taking care of her "kids" during the middle of the day. In the upper floors, Cloud runs the "Strife Delivery Service," which is basically just an office from which Cloud takes appointments. Tifa answers this phone during the opening of Advent Children to hear Reno's voice.

After Cloud finds the orphan Denzel, he and Tifa take care of him in the upper stories of the bar, along with Barret's adoptive daughter Marlene Wallace. Both take him in as a loving son, but Tifa is much more open about it, as Cloud is still emotionally troubled over losing Aerith.

When taking Marlene to Aerith's church to visit Cloud, she discovers that Cloud has Geostigma. Loz shows up here, hoping to find Jenova's head under Cloud's care. Instead, he found Tifa there, who he begins to duel. During the fight, Tifa uses several of her original Limit Breaks, such as Beat Rush, Somersault, Waterkick, and Meteor Strike. She is eventually defeated after Loz begins to use his superhuman speed and pile bunker, Dual Hound. Cloud finds her later, unconscious in the church, and prepares to hunt down Marlene, but is stopped by a bout of pain from his Geostigma.

Cloud first requests that Tifa go to the Forgotten Capital to get Marlene and Denzel, but Tifa gives him a speech about his apathy and self-loathing, talking him into going. She doesn't show up again until the next day, when Loz and Yazoo have chained the children with Geostigma to the memorial in the center of Edge. She is knocked out by Bahamut SIN while protecting Denzel. Waking up quickly, she began to join the battle with the remaining members of AVALANCHE against Bahamut SIN, and is the last person—other than Aerith, who provides help from the Lifestream—to help Cloud into the air.

She appears on the Shera with the members of AVALANCHE while Cloud fought Kadaj and Sephiroth, and arrives in the church with Denzel to heal his Geostigma.

[edit] Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-

Tifa, like many members of AVALANCHE, only appears briefly during the game. The first is during the ground assault on Midgar, leading the tanks with Barret and Cloud. The second was at the end, when Yuffie enters Seventh Heaven to inquire about Vincent.

[edit] Equipment and Stats

Tifa is a Monk, and thus has high physical stats and equips Claw and Glove type weapons. However, stat differences in Final Fantasy VII are unnoticeable for most characters.

[edit] Limit Breaks

Final Heaven

Tifa's Limit Breaks are unlike most Final Fantasy VII characters. Instead of selecting a move from a list, Tifa's Limit Breaks consist of consecutively hitting the opponent with each move adding on to the previous. Each move deals physical damage to a random opponent. The Limits are selected through a selection process similar to the Slot skill from Final Fantasy VI. Each time the reel hits "Yeah!" damage is doubled, but each time it hits "Miss", the attack does not connect. The player stops the reel, and later skills have "Yeah!" harder to hit and surrounded by "Miss".

Level Name Obtaining Action
1 Beat Rush Already known Runs up and punches the enemy a few times, dealing 1.25 times normal damage to a single target.
Somersault Use Beat Rush 9 times Somersaults in the air while kicking the enemy, dealing 1.375 times normal damage to a single target.
2 Waterkick Kill ~80 enemies with Tifa. A circling sweep kick accompanied inexplicably by water, dealing 1.5 times normal damage.
Meteodrive Use Waterkick 7 times. Picks up the enemy in a vertical suplex position and drops, slamming the enemy to the ground, dealing 1.625 times normal damage.
3 Dolphin Blow Kill ~80 enemies with Tifa after learning Waterkick. Uppercut accompanied by water and a dolphin, dealing 1.75 times normal damage to a single target.
Meteor Strike Use Dolpin Blow 6 times. Picks up the enemy, spins it around, jumps high into the air and flings it downwards, dealing 1.875 times normal damage to a single target.

[edit] Non-Final Fantasy Appearances

[edit] Kingdom Hearts II

"Have you seen a guy with spiky hair?"
—Tifa in Kingdom Hearts II

Tifa is wearing her Advent Children attire. She is looking for Cloud, and looks around the ruins of Hollow Bastion for him in a comical fashion, such as looking behind picture frames and under desks. Although she sees him a few times, she constantly shows up a second too late before he disappears again. She fights together with Sora and his friends during the attack on Hollow Bastion, and later appears as an opponent in the Underdrome Coliseum. When Cloud battles Sephiroth, Tifa runs in to support him, and briefly spars with Sephiroth herself before encouraging Cloud to fight. After they vanish, Tifa gives Sora the Fenrir keychain. Oddly enough, despite appearing in Hollow Bastion with half of the rest of the cast of Final Fantasy VII, Cloud and Sephiroth are the only ones Tifa actually interacts with, although both she and Aeris can be found wandering the town square at one point.

[edit] Itadaki Street Special

Tifa also appears as a character in Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Special.

[edit] Itadaki Street Portable

Tifa also appears as a character in Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Portable.

[edit] Ehrgeiz

Tifa is a initial playable character and is one of the only two fighters, along with Cloud Strife, who has more than one unlockable outfit.

[edit] Etymology

"Lockhart" is likely meant to symbolize Tifa's shyness and reluctance to tell Cloud about her feelings for him.
