Dissidia Final Fantasy Summon Compendium

Tiamat (ティアマット, Tiamatto?) is a recurring enemy and summoned monster in the Final Fantasy series. Always a dragon, Tiamat is usually one of the later bosses in a game, or at least one of the harder enemies the party encounters. Despite its several reappearances, Tiamat's most prominent appearance is in her debut as one of the Four Fiends.

Appearances

Final Fantasy

Ffbosstiamatpsp

Tiamat made her first appearance in the original Final Fantasy, where she is one of the Four Fiends, and is actually the strongest, since she is fought last in the Flying Fortress. Defeating her opens the way to the depths of the Whisperwind Cove.

Final Fantasy II

150x

Tiamat appears as a powerful monster-in-a-box boss in Pandaemonium in a treasure chest containing a Genji Helm.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years

Tiamat appears as a recolored Bahamut, and does not have multiple heads like in previous incarnations. It is said to be a former Guardian Force in its Scan information.

Final Fantasy IX

Tiamat-ffix

Tiamat first appears as the Wind Guardian against Steiner and Vivi. The whole party only fights it as Tiamat later in Memoria. A crystal clone of Tiamat can also be found as a Random Encounter at the Crystal World.

Final Fantasy XI

Tiamat in Final Fantasy XI.

Tiamat is a Hyper Notorious Monster found in the depths of the Attohwa Chasm. One of the three "Grand Wyrms" introduced in the Final Fantasy XI: Chains of Promathia expansion along with Jormungand and Vrtra, Tiamat once boasted one of the highest levels and greatest HP pools in the game, estimated at Level 95. Though the three wyrms are known for the lack of good items they give upon death, Tiamat remains the only Grand Wyrm actively sought out by the endgame community today on account of its Herald's Gators, which increases movement speed for particular mage jobs.

Tiamat's spawning conditions are brutal, as she has a brief window in which to spawn once every 30 minutes, beginning 72 hours after her last demise, lasting for exactly 48 hours, requiring Linkshell groups to spend ridiculous spans of time waiting for her to make an appearance. In the Chains of Promathia storyline, Tiamat is perpetually hunted by the Shikaree Sisters, three Mithran hunters who fare from Olzhirya, the Mithran homeland.

Etymology

In Babylonian myths, Tiamat is a sea goddess and the embodiment of primordial chaos. She creates all the Babylonian gods, then attacks them and is split in two by the god Marduk, who uses her remains to create heaven and earth. In modern times the game Dungeons and Dragons has Tiamat as a chromatic dragon, the Queen of the Evil Dragons and as such the opposing deity to Bahamut, who is a platinum dragon and the King of Benevolent Dragons.
