The Thunder Harpy is an enemy from Final Fantasy Dimensions. The enemy appears inside the Cave of Fulmination from the World of Light.

EtymologyEdit

Thunder is the sound caused by lightning. Depending on the distance and nature of the lightning, thunder can range from a sharp, loud crack to a long, low rumble (brontide).

Harpy is not a part of this enemy's Japanese name. In Greek and Roman mythology, a harpy was a female monster in the form of a bird with a human face. They steal food from their victims while they are eating and carry evildoers (especially those who have killed their family) to the Erinyes. They seem originally to have been wind spirits. Their name means "snatchers".

The French translation calls this enemy "Vouivre jaune" (lit. Yellow Wyvern). A wyvern is a medieval European mythological winged creature with a dragon's head, reptilian body, two legs (sometimes none), and a barbed tail. They appear in many crests of Europe's ancient families, symbolizing strength. The word wyvern comes from wivere, which means serpent. They are based on Pterosaurs, flying reptiles which lived during the time of the dinosaurs.
