Thundaga (サンダガ, Sandaga?), also known as Bolt 3, Lit 3, Thunder 3, and Thunder III, is a recurring Black Magic spell from the Final Fantasy series. It is generally the most powerful Lightning-elemental spell.

A similarly named ability also appears in several titles, sometimes as a unique ability to Garland, serving as an homage to the original Japanese Famicom release of Final Fantasy.

Description

Thundaga (Bolt3 Final Fantasy Origins) is a level 6 Black Magic spell which inflicts major Lightning-elemental damage to all enemies. In the Origins release, it inflicts between 60 and 240 Lightning damage, while in subsequent releases, damage dealt depends on the caster's Intelligence. Thundaga may be cast by Chronodia, Dark Wizard, and Chaos.

The spell can be bought at Crescent Lake and can be learned by the Black Mage, Black Wizard, and Red Wizard job classes. In the GBA/PSP/mobile releases it costs 35 MP to cast.

In the original Japanese version, this spell was named "Thunger" (サンガー, Sangā?). The spell name was standardized to "Thundaga" (サンダガ, Sandaga?) since the WonderSwan Color release.

Final Fantasy III[]

Thundaga is a Black Magic level 5 spell that causes heavy Lightning damage to one or all enemies and has a base power of 110. It can bought in Northeast Saronia or Doga's Village for 5,000 gil. It can be used by the Black Mage, Magus, Onion Knight (3D), and Sage. Its effect can also be used with the Heavenly Wrath item.

It can be used by Qumqum.

Final Fantasy IV[]

Description

Thundaga (Lit-3 in early versions and Thunder 3 in Easy Type) is a Black Magic spell that inflicts heavy Lightning damage to one or all enemies. It can be learned by Fusoya (default), Tellah (default), Palom (level 34), and Rydia (level 45 in 2D versions (41 in 3D versions)).

It has a casting time of 4, costs 30 MP to cast and has a spell power of 256 in 2D versions (110 in 3D versions). Thundaga can be cast by Lunar Ramuh, Lunar Asura, Li'l Murderer, and Dark Sage.

In the Easy Type version, the casting time was reduced to 3.

Final Fantasy IV -Interlude-[]

Thundaga is a Black Magic spell learned by imposter Rydia (level 45) and Palom (default). It deals major Lightning-elemental damage to one enemy or moderate damage to all enemies at the cost of 30 MP.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years[]

Thundaga is a Black Magic spell that costs 30 MP to cast. It is learned by Fusoya (initially) Golbez (initially), Rydia (level 30), Palom (level 43), and Leonora (level 82). Palom can use Twin Thundaga as a Band with another party member, which is a more powerful version of the spell. Fusoya and Golbez's Double Black Magic Band has a 30% chance of using Twin Thundaga.

Final Fantasy V[]

Thundaga (also called Bolt3) causes heavy Lightning damage to one or all enemies. It can be used by the Black Magic command used by the Black Mage job. This spell can only be purchased in Moore for 6,000 gil and costs 25 MP to cast. Thundaga is one of the spells that can be cast from the Wonder Wand for free.

Thundaga can be cast by Barrier, Enuo, Exdeath in the first battle, Flaremancer, Fury, Melusine, Necrophobe, Neo Exdeath, and Omniscient. The player may use Thundaga by catching and releasing a Reflect Mage, Tiny Mage, or Dark Elemental (#235).

Final Fantasy VI[]

Thundaga is an Attack spell (Bolt3 in older translations) deals heavy Lightning-elemental damage to one or all enemies. This spell can be learned from the esper Valigarmanda at a x1 rate, and costs 53 MP to cast. It has a hit rate of 150, power of 120, and is vulnerable to Runic. Thundaga can also be cast by various enemies, the earliest being by the Crane.

Final Fantasy VII[]

Bolt3 is the final spell of the Lightning Materia, and costs 52 MP to cast. It has a base spell power equal to 4x the base magic damage. If linked with an All Materia, its spell animation changes as it will hit all enemies. The spell is also available from the Master Magic Materia. Only the boss Bizarro∙Sephiroth and the enemy Christopher use the spell.

Final Fantasy VII Remake[]

Thundaga is the final ability of Lightning Materia Lightning Materia, costing 22 MP to cast. It deals a large amount of Lightning-elemental damage to one target, and will never miss.

Thundaga can be used by the final boss, Unknown Entity, and Whisper Viridi.

Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-[]

Thundaga fires many bolts of light forward, hitting multiple targets. Compared to Thunder and Thundara, Thundaga has the widest radius and longest range. Three variations of Thundaga also appear: Dark Thundaga inflicts damage and inflicts Poison and Silence statuses; Hell Thundaga inflicts Poison, Silence, Stop and Instant Death; and Tri-Thundaga fires lightning in three directions doing greater damage than Thundaga.

Thundaga costs 32 MP, Dark Thundaga costs 38 MP, Hell Thundaga costs 52 MP, and Tri-Thundaga costs 64 MP. Thundaga can be bought from Research Dept. QMC + for 10,000 gil and Hell Thundaga can be bought from Wutai Secret Shop for 15,000 gil; the others can be made through Materia Fusion.

Final Fantasy VIII[]

Thundaga can be refined from items and can be drawn from enemies when the party's level exceeds 30. Casting Thundaga in battle increases compatibility with Quezacotl by 2.4, but lowers compatibility with Leviathan by 0.8. Additionally, Thundaga can be junctioned to deal and resist against Thunder-elemental damage.

Final Fantasy IX[]

The Octagon Rod teaches Vivi Thundaga Black Magic spell, and Steiner can also use it in his Sword Magic. The shops in Daguerreo and Esto Gaza have the Octagon Rod for sale after Zidane and company complete the Desert Palace, but it can no longer be bought after the party have entered the Shimmering Island portal.

It costs 24 MP to cast, requires 80 AP to learn, and has a spell power of 72. It can be reflected and works with Return Magic. Thundaga can be cast by Abadon, Earth Guardian, Grand Dragon, Kuja, Malboro, and Necron.

Final Fantasy X[]

Thundaga is located in Lulu's section of the Sphere Grid, although all characters can obtain it. It has a spell power of 42 and costs 16 MP. Thundaga can be cast by Abaddon, Behemoth King, Chimera (Home), Chimera Brain, Coeurlregina, Greater Sphere, Imp, Jumbo Flan, Master Coeurl, Mindy, Seymour, Seymour Omnis, Sleep Sprout, Spirit, Varuna, and Wraith. It can be taught to an aeon via four Lightning Gems after obtaining Summoner's Soul from Belgemine.

Final Fantasy X-2[]

Thundaga is available for the Black Mage dressphere. Learning it costs 100 AP and it costs 24 MP to cast. Thundaga can also be used when the player has gone through three nodes on the Thunder Spawn Garment Grid or while equipped with the Ochre Ring accessory. Thundaga can also be used via Yuna's Festivalist ability Ltng. Sandals, and hits either one or two enemies. Many enemies can also cast this spell.

Final Fantasy X-2: Last Mission[]

Thundaga is used by Rikku in the Black Mage dressphere. It costs 4 MP to cast. It is the only lightning-elemental attack the player can use. It as a range of three tiles ahead of the character.

Final Fantasy XI[]

Thundaga is a tier 1 elemental spell. It deals area of effect damage, potentially hitting multiple targets. It can be bought from vendors for 17,472 gil or less depending upon fame.

Final Fantasy XII[]

Thundaga inflicts major Lightning-elemental damage to all enemies in range. The enemy ability Piercing Thundaga can break through Reflect status.

In the original version, Thundaga is a Level 5 Black Magick spell. It (initially) costs 42 MP to cast and is available for purchase in Balfonheim Port for 8,200 gil. It is part of the Black Magick 5 license for 35 LP.

In the Zodiac versions, Thundaga is on the Black Magick 9 license for 90 LP. It costs 40 MP to cast and costs 7000 gil to buy. It is part of the Black Mage board, and the Red Battlemage can reach Thundaga's license by acquiring the license for Cúchulainn first.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings[]

Kytes learns Thundaga at Level 18. It deals Lightning damage to all enemies around a designated target.

Description

Thundaga is a Ravager ability that deals Lightning damage in a range and launches Staggered opponents, as well as interrupts some enemy actions. It costs 3 ATB and has an Attack Power of 2.2. It can be learned by Lightning (stage 9), Sazh (stage 8), and Hope (stage 8). It can also be used by Odin, who can cast it at the cost of 1 ATB segment.

It is also an enemy ability used by Behemoth King, Dahaka, Right Ailette, and Verdelet.

Final Fantasy XIII-2[]

Thundaga is a Ravager ability that inflicts lightning-attribute magic damage on targets within a wide radius. It has an ATB cost of 3 and a modifier of 2.2. It can be learned by Serah (role level 41), Circuitron (15), Grand Behemoth (37), Lightning (10), and Valfodr (23).

Thundaga is also a Mage ability for Lightning in the "Requiem of the Goddess" downloadable content scenario. It is learned at level 7 and has an ATB cost of 4. It inflicts lightning-attribute magic damage on targets within a wide radius.

It is also an enemy ability used by Left Manipulator, Lightning, Twilight Odin, Valfodr Lv. 15, Valfodr Lv. 70, and Valfodr Lv. 99.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII[]

Thundaga is a high tier magic ability that consists of eight hits of lightning-elemental damage. It drops from the Schrodinger Ω, Hanuman, and Chimera enemies. The Black Rose garb has Thundaga (LV5) as a locked ability.

Legacy Final Fantasy XIV[]

Description

Thundaga is a level 46 spell learned by Thaumaturges and is exclusive to the class. It deals high thunder elemental damage to a single target, and has a cast time of 5 seconds. Its critical damage can be increased by using it after a Thunder → Thundara combo.

Final Fantasy XIV[]

Thunder III (Thundaga in the Japanese version) appears as a Thaumaturge ability available at level 46. The ability deals lightning-elemental damage to a single target with the potency of 60 and deals damage over time with a potency of 35 for a period of 24 seconds. This spell automatically replace the player's Thunder spell due to the Thunder Mastery II trait.

In addition, Sophia, the Goddess has access to her own version of Thunder III during the boss encounters with her. The ability is a donut-shaped area of effect attack that inflicts damage to those caught outside of the safe zone of the attack.

Description

Thundaga is learned by the Black Mage job from the Thor Rod for 300 AP. It costs 24 MP to cast, has a Magic Power of 50, and has a range of 4 with a vertical reach of 3. It is stealable through the ability Steal: Ability, and is also susceptible to Return Magic and Absorb MP. Thundaga is also one of the central spells of the Magestorm skillset used by Totema.

When cast, three lightning strikes from the top, left, and right corner will hit the target.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles[]

Thundaga can only be cast when fusing Thunder Magicite. The player must combine three Thunder Magicites to cast this. It deals major Lightning damage and shocks nearby enemies.

It is also an enemy ability used by Giant Crab.

Final Fantasy Dimensions II[]

Thundaga I-III are magic attacks available only for Jornee to use. The spells can only be learned from her final Ramuh signet. All Thundaga spells deal heavy wind-elemental magic damage to a single enemy. The spells also deal extra damage against machine-type enemies and cost 45 MP.

In addition, Ramuh is able to use Thundaga III when he joins as a guest party member during the finale of the Eureka arc.

In the original free-to-play versions, Thundaga I-III could be used by any party member equipped with a Thundaga versions of the Ixion or Goblez OR signets. Each version of the spell dealt more damage depending on the summon's rank and had increased MP costs for each version of the spell.

Dissidia Final Fantasy (2008)[]

Thundaga is one of Onion Knight's Bravery attacks. It chains from Thunder and summons two bolts of lightning to strike the opponent from above, initiating a chase sequence. It costs 30 CP to equip and 180 AP to master.

Shantotto uses Thundaga when casting Spirit Magic: Thunder while she has between 3000 and 6000 Bravery, which summons medium-sized lightning bolts to strike the opponent from above.

Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy[]

Lightning can use Thundaga as a Bravery attack. It creates a field of electricity in front of her that lasts for a period of time, initiating a chase sequence if it hits the opponent. It costs 30 CP to equip.

Shantotto can cast Thundaga with Spirit Magic: Thunder between 2000 and 4000 bravery.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT[]

Thundaga is retained by many of the returning characters, though Kefka's version can now be charged and shoots up to five bolts of lightning.

Thundaga is also one of Ramuh's HP attacks in his boss battle, launching several bolts of lightning in a star-like pattern from his position.

Chrono Trigger Lightning II

Lightning II in Chrono Trigger.

Thundaga has appeared in other Square Enix titles as an ability, referencing the Final Fantasy version of the spell. Like Final Fantasy, Thundaga serves as the third tier of Thunder magic.

The original Game Boy version of SaGa 3 (known as the Final Fantasy Legend III in the west) includes Lit 2 (サンダガ, Sandaga?, lit. Thundaga) as the final form of thunder-elemental Black Magic. The Japanese exclusive 3D remake instead features Thundaga as the third tier, now dealing wind-elemental damage to multiple foes. Thundaga in the remake is outclassed by the next tier, Hell Thunder.

Chrono Trigger features Lightning II (サンダガ, Sandaga?, lit. Thundaga)[note 1] as a light-elemental magic tech for both Crono and Magus, serving as the upgraded area version of the default Lightning spell. Lightning II also appears in the Chrono series's spiritual successor, I Am Setsuna, as a spritnite ability for Setsuna, even carrying over the same tier suffixes in Japanese.

Bravely Default - Thundaga

Thundaga in Bravely Default.

Thundaga, together with Thunder and Thundara, appears as a recurring magic command in the Kingdom Hearts series. When performing Thundaga in titles, the caster summons a storm of lightning within an area of effect. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep features a unique version for Aqua known as Thundaga Shot (サンダガショット, Sandaga Shotto?), which instantly hits enemies with connecting bolts of lightning.

Thundaga is featured as a recurring Black Magic spell in the Bravely series, serving as the strongest lightning-elemental Black Magic spell in most titles. In Bravely Default II, Thundaga can also be performed through the use of the Oracle job's Triplaga spell.

The Bravely Default version of Thundaga also appears in the defunct mobile title, Valkyrie Anatomia, as a spell used by Agnès.
