"The Boundless Ocean" was first released in the original version of the game's soundtrack, of which it was the twenty-fifth track. It was subsequently re-recorded for the original soundtrack of the DS version of Final Fantasy III, of which it is the thirtieth track.
"The Boundless Ocean" is heard on the world map on two occasions: it plays as the overworld theme for the submerged Surface World, until Kraken is defeated and the Water Crystal is restored. After that, this theme can be heard while travelling underwater on the Nautilus.

The original NES version of "The Boundless Ocean" is part of the Final Fantasy III Music Pack DLC distributed through the PlayStation Network. It may be automatically selected for Arcade and Quick Battles featuring the Onion Knight and/or the Cloud of Darkness or taking place at the Crystal Tower or the World of Darkness.
