Template:Sideicon The Terrain (ちけい, Chikei?) is a Geomancer command in Final Fantasy III that gives a random effect depending on where the Geomancer casts it.

NES version

The Geomancer is a job obtained from the Water Crystal in the Cave of Tides. This is relevant about the Terrain effect in dungeons before and after the Cave of Tides. In the NES version "earth" and "water" elements are just inferred, because there is no enemy weak against these two elements.

Effects are sorted by backfire rate.

The player is not likely to go to a specific location just to get the chance of using a specific Terrain ability; thus it is useful if the player can know which techniques can happen in a specific terrain.

All terrain types (except for the World of Darkness) follow the same structure:

  1. 38-40% chance of an elemental attack against all enemies;
  2. 38-40% chance of an elemental attack against a single enemy;
  3. 20% chance of Wind Slash (except for Wind terrains, where it accumulates with #2);
  4. 2% chance of Shadowflare (except for non-elemental terrains, where it accumulates with #2);
