Japanese Title

While Squall was given the title "Commander" in the English version, he was given the title "iinchō" (委員長, lit. "Chairman") in the Japanese version. Could I put it down? However, I'm not exactly sure where to put it. The only way I could place it in the article, is if I capitalize the first Commander, put it in Bold text, then use the Nihongo template. --Dethklok91 (talk) 09:12, September 11, 2012 (UTC)

i'm actual quite impressed with this artical, its the best one ive read although i havent really read that many but its not bad ... but isnt good either somewhere inbetween. there is a lot of information on offer here, wish it were more readible. in some cases there is hardy any information on subject matter, on may occassion the subject is suddenly changed as aparent as a butterfly dancing from flower to flower. psp

Squall's Alive?

Theres no proof at the end that Squall is actually alive, the only person who sees him in the end is Rinoa, when the video camera looks over to the balcony only one door is open. And when Rinoa finds Squall, we do not see him awaken. --Kaluriel 22:38, 03 January 2008 (UTC)

THEN WHERE'S THE PROOF THAT HE'S DEAD?

Proof HAS now come to surface, recently I purchased the PS3 version of final fantasy based on the PS1 format from the PS Store, and guess what? I recently finished the game and SQUALL IS ALIVE!

Now there is, I recently purchased off the PS3 Store final fantasy viii (8) and guess what? At the end it actually shows Squall alive! he hugs Rinoa right at the end, this is not a joke or a prank! HE IS ALIVE! I can guarantee it! they added new footage and it shows him with Rina as they gaze up at the stars on the Balamb Ship then they both smile at each other and fall into an embrace, please spread the word!

Comment: Wow i cant believe you guys (people below me). If you watch until the end of the credits it shows squall and Rinoa hug after a shooting star goes by in the night sky. I know it dosn't show him when irvine is recording but it does show him after the credits if you watch until the very end. I am amazed that you guys are even having this conversation about him being dead, you should know to always watch until the very end of credits their is usually something afterwards. If you don't believe me and think this is some dumb joke then watch the ending on you tube here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmDt-EbFslo. It skips the credits after the recording though so normally there would be a few minutes of credits then this extra part at the end. Also I didn't know how to comment so i just threw this in here by editing the page.

Griever on the blade And the GF Griever

I don't think those two should be connected. I don't believe it is ever established in the game that the two are the same. Although they probably ARE, thats just speculation. 142.161.92.196 03:07, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Since when is Griever a GF? To my knowledge, you can't summon it. That's like saying Alexander is a legit Eidolon and that Yura is a legit Esper. You can't summon them, right? Crazyswordsman 05:37, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
Griever is summoned by Ultimecia in the final battle, and she actually calls it "the Ultimate Guardian Force"... Also, I seem to recall Squall saying something about Griever, just about the time you get to name it for his blade (just can't remember the exact words). But no matter how you twist and turn it, Griever is a GF (some speculate that it was the one Squall found as a kid and gave Ellone before she left), though you only get to fight it as an enemy and the ring, necklace and chain on the blade (by the same name) are all "references" to that GF. P.S. wether or not you can summon them is totally beside the point, FFIX Alexander still belong to the race of Eidolons and Yura to that of Espers. Just because they can't be (command) summoned in battle doesn't exactly mean they are not summons at all. If that was the case, FFVIII Odin and Gilgamesh also wouldn't be "legit" summons, since the just "randomly" pop up --Hecko X 06:33, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
It sure is established. Whatever you name Squall's ring and necklace, ends up as Ultimecia's GF's name, though you may consider it out-of-dialogue proof. But Scanning enemy Griever gives you the description "In Squall's mind, the strongest GF". Why would a totally unrelated to anything else GF suddenly pop out in Squall's mind? There is a hypothesis based on that that it isn't even a 'real' GF, but more like Ultimecia giving a physical form to Squall's thoughts. She was able to steal magic, wasn't she? IIRC, Squall doesn't say anything about Griever as a GF when naming it, though, he only describes it as a lion. 216.224.121.141 19:16, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
Same goes for everyone. All playable characters can steal magic using the Draw command, and what Ultimecia did is pretty much the same like when the player draws GFs from enemies e.g. Pandemona from Fujin.--Goldberry2000 22:18, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
I believe that griever is a GF,not only bcoz Ulti. says that but also bcoz the whole storyline...if this is it then squall had junctioned this gf as a kid (which explains the 255% accuracy from the beggining)anyway whatever--Aqmaster 07:53, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm probably wrong, but

Isn't his last name Lionheart?

Nope. That's just his ultimate weapon. --Crazyswordsman 07:34, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Height

Is he really 5ft 8? does it say that in the manual? I know the Japanese make the heros shorter than the western average, but on Seifer's page it says that he is 6 ft 2! thats a huge difference, but you dont notice it while playing do you? Its not really that important, but it bothered me. Thom32 22:14, 8 march 2007, (GMT)

Let's also recall that Sephiroth is shorter than Seifer by one inch, and Laguna is taller than Squall by one inch. Anyway, I have heard that Nomura is 5'7 - Cloud's height - so it doesn't seem all that odd that he makes his heroes the same approximate height as himself. As for Seifer and Sephiroth - well they're enemy characters, enemies have to be striking and the first thing that'd make a character striking is to make them tall. Though Seifer being taller than Seph amuses me. --Mimi Sardinia 14:18, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Well theres an age difference of 1 year with Squall and Seifer, that might cause a little of the height difference... --Zinos

Wow, did you guys actually have a discussion over whether he is considered a fan favorite or not a few years ago? If he wasn't, he wouldn't have been in KH, I know that much...I never met anyone who DIDN'T like Squall before, actually. Squall

I just wanted to leave a comment regarding the frequent description of Squall as being "emo". To me, the term emo is not synonomous with someone who has a cynical or unhappy outlook on life. A lot of people get depressed who don't deserve to be called emo. Did Squall start the game as a bit of an insensitive jerk? Yes. Does that mean the same as emo? No. If he had spent the whole game crying about his hurt or otherwise drawing attention to his inner turmoil, THAT would have been more emo. However, the only reason we even know about his feelings is because of his internal monologues in the game. The fact is, he doesn't believe in pinning his problems on others. The very concept of the stereotypical whiney emo goes against Squall's belief that everyone has to handle their own problems on the inside, without drawing others into the mix. -Nevada Smith, January 27th, 2010

Alot of people hate him because hes emo and whatever. But he wanted to appear emo because he thought it would be better.I think he would have been a great charcter if he was his normal self.Moogle king 21:44, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

I think people use the word Emo too loosely with Squall. Cloud was a more of a defined Emo than Squall was. If you look back to Squall, he just never voiced any of his emotions. He wanted to be a cold, static, Soldier. He felt the pain from loosing the person closest to him as a kid, and the fact that he was an orphan. He knew that people die, and he didn't want that pain, so he cold-shouldered everyone around him so they wouldn't want to be near him, this way they wouldn't connect. If something happened to that person, and they were no longer in his life, then he wouldn't feel hurt. Now, after years of his life doing this, he gets put in charge of groups, and paired with people who don't want to take his cold tone and continue to strive inward, so he finally starts to want to change, and thus, has conflict with himself. This isn't really Emo, just a personal growth. Squall was caring for his team-mates, and even people he didn't know as he grew in the game, revealing more of his real personality, like Moogle King said, would be more likeable. ~ Matty

Correction: Zack did cry, when he defeated his mentor Angeal. of course Angeal was one of his best friends- a comrade to be sure. "Men do not cry for themselves but for their comrades"

Back then when I played this I liked Squall because of his "I don't give a damn" issues... kinda cool back than but today everyone interpretates this as "emo"... while I'm really not sure what to think about "emos" I'd rather stay away from such a way of living. But I can't see where Squall would be part of such a behaveiour pattern. But oh well, when everyone says it, it must be true ;) ——Preceding unsigned comment was added by 94.221.17.68 (talkcontribs) 22:20, February 24, 2010. Please sign your posts with ~~~~.

Not everything you read on the internet is true, and the unintelligent masses like to put everything into small, clear-cut categories. Based on the textbook definition of "emo", Squall is on the opposite end of the scale; he shows no emotions. - File:FFIII-nes-sage.gif Saethori (T / C) - 20:08, February 25, 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I'm like 4 years late but wanted to add that the beginning of the game Squall was quite far from emo, as emo means emotional and usually whiny. He was most cold, silent, loner-esque and occasionally angsty. Xelestial (talk) 20:14, August 15, 2012 (UTC)

The Oath as Squall's theme

It is mentioned in the article that the Oath is a recurring theme in "Squall moments". One could add a side note that "The Oath" is also very suitable for Squall's theme since Squall made a promise (or a vow, an oath) to himself not to create emotional bonds with people. However, "The Oath" is played when Fujin talks sense to Seifer aboard the Lunatic Pandora, but I think it refers to Fujin & Raijin's words ("We were a posse") in a way that they made a promise (again, an oath) to be a posse, to be together.

These are not too much of new info, but I just thought it would be worth mentioning the relation between the musical piece and Squall's own oath - it may even be the source for the name of the song ^^ --User:Dramirth

Fan Favorite, again.

Ehem, I humbly request that his mention as a fan favorite be replaced on the article. I would do it myself but I wish to discuss it with someone who's not sharing my views.

I regard Squall as a fan favorite because, let's face it, all you have to do is type Squall in any search engine and you'll come up with TONS of Fanlistings, Shrines, deviants full of his fanart, fanfiction with him as the central character, pictures of people cosplaying as him, photomanipulations with the official art and many many more things. ERGO, he has a LOT of fans. The fact that he's appeared in so many other games is not due to the fact that he is "well known", it's because he's a fan favorite, and the creators and developers over at Square-enix (or whatever it goes by these days) clearly perceive him as a fan favorite. Otherwise, he would not have been given such a prominent role in KH, Dissidia (as far as we've seen) and other games. So I humbly ask of other FFwikians with superior ranks or experience to be objective and not fanboys when considering this request. After all, these sites are supposed to be all about reliable information right? And clearly Squall is one of the most well-liked FF characters out there. Winged Lion 02:06, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Dozens of FF characters are fan-favorites. Tifa, Cloud, Sephiroth, Balthier, Vincent, Terra, Auron... There's no reason to note something so universal. Drake Clawfang 02:16, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
Agreed. Nowhere on Cloud's page does it say that he is a hugely popular character. If we play favorites with one character, people will ask that we do the same with others, and then fanboys, the people you want to avoid, begin to squabble over who should be lauded or not. 8bit 02:22, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
Exactly what I was checking. Sorry, I was under the impression that fan favorite was a mentioned status in other character's pages, but I've just checked them and proved myself wrong, I suppose I had the urge to put that on here after reading what other users had stated about this status. No offense but in some pictures it is a light blue not gray. :P and in cutscenes from various games Squall has appeared in his eye color is blue.

Looking at the cutscenes, and the drawn icons and such for him, I'd say his eyes are definitely blue, I just think they're more of a dim blue. I would like that to be reconsidered. In response to the first link: Look. Very blue.

The sprites listed as 'Chocobo World 8Bit Sprites' in these articles are not actually from Chocobo World (or 8bit), but are actually found in the PocketStation's memorycard file manager. The sprites correspond to the mini-portraits used as file icons in the PSone's memorycard manager.

Squall in fangames

I noticed that Squall's battle role in fangames seems to be a Red Mage if I were to describe it the best way I can. For me it's a bit strange as I know that males in Final Fantasy VIII are given physical-oriented Limit Breaks (and yes - I know about junctioning magic and GFs), but in fangames he is a spellcaster and he seems to learn them naturally. This thing is bugging me so much, so I ask you: why he is given that role? (I played only demo so don't pick on me, alright?)—Kaimi (999,999 CP/5 TP) 23:01, November 28, 2010 (UTC)

Out of all of the FF main protagonists, Squall has been the most associated with black magic, partially due to how the Junction System boosts his prowess and part due to his rival's, Seifer's, use of fireballs in his attacks (which, ever since Kingdom Hearts, has become associated with Squall's attacks as well). Much like how Yuna is usually depicted as a Summoner, Squall is usually depicted as having Red Mage abilities in addition to his gunblade-work. Netherith 02:19, November 29, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, I think I got it.—Kaimi (999,999 CP/5 TP) 23:01, November 29, 2010 (UTC)

Nobody has jobs in FFVIII. You can completely customise all command abilities and all the stats. Plus there is no gear other than weapons. If you go by default stats Rinoa has higher strength than Squall, so he's a pretty poor warrior. ;)Keltainentoukokuu 03:03, March 12, 2011 (UTC)

Quote at the top of Squall's page

I don't like the current quote we have starting Squall's page off : "Right and wrong are not what separate us and our enemies. It's our different standpoints, our perspectives that separate us."

This is the Squall from the beginning of the game talking--the seventeen-year-old loner who wants to believe that he's a tough and capable soldier. I would argue that by the end, Squall has a very clear idea of right and wrong, good and evil--which he learned from Rinoa, and the passion with which she challenges things she sees as harmful or unjust. The Squall from the end of the game would certainly not argue that freezing Rinoa in the Sorceress Memorial is 'a good idea from a different standpoint.' No, he got her the hell out of there! And he didn't think that what Ultimecia was doing was okay from her point of view. He risked his life, without pay or any other compensation other than justice, to stop her plot. So I'd like to change the quote.

Changing it to this quote would be my vote, from when the group is discussing Seifer's alleged death: Will they...Will they talk about me this way if I die, too? Squall was this and that. Using past tense, saying whatever they want? So this is what death is all about... ...Not for me. I won't have it!!!

For me, this was when I decided that I did like Squall as a character. Yes, he was a total jackass, but his reaction to Seifer's 'death' humanized him and his insecurities for me. From this conversation, I came to the conclusion that Squall cares very deeply about other people, and what they think of him, which is why he keeps them at arm's length for fear of being hurt. Labealeisoud 03:53, April 21, 2011 (UTC)

Squall does understand that freezing Rinoa is a good idea from Esthar's point of view, but he doesn't agree with it. That isn't the point of the quote, that he wouldn't have any opinion on what is right and what is wrong of his own. The point is that Squall doesn't view anyone as just plain evil in black and white terms, not even Galbadia, or Edea, or probably not even Ultimecia. So, using this example, Squall understands why Esthar wants to lock Rinoa away forever. He doesn't think it's right and decides to stop it, but he doesn't think Esthar is evil for wanting this. They use the quote in the game to contrast with Irvine, who thinks they are lucky to be the heroes who get to kill Edea, who is evil so she deserves to die, whereas Squall has a bit broader outlook and realises that the reason they have been commissioned to kill her is a political reason.Keltainentoukokuu 04:03, April 21, 2011 (UTC)
The quote shows Squall's wisdom, which is far more mature than a typical 17 year old. Your quote-of-choice really only sells Squall as a self-obsessed, paranoid character; which he is not. We need quotes that can stand alone with little to no need of the context being spelled out. Netherith 05:57, April 21, 2011 (UTC)

There are many interesting theories about Squall dying at the end of the first disk and the rest being in Squall's mind. It may not be cannon but fascinating to think about for fans of the game. This is about the same time, Rionna truly starts taking a liking to Squall and things quit making as much sense world-wise and become somewhat surreal.

Squall can't miss?

Just want to make sure. Is it true that Squall's physical attack can't miss even in blind status? I heard that he just can't activate his gunblade trigger in blind status but still his strike will hit for sure. I was not able to test it myself since I lost my FF8 discs & can't find the new one anywhere, eventhough I want to play it again so badly. Thanks for the answer...Pronunciation 13:52, January 26, 2012 (UTC)

Squall's Hit stat is 255 (the highest it can possibly be) at the very beginning, so yeah, he pretty much cannot miss. And here's the text on the Blind status page, verbatim: "Blind reduces a character's Hit Rate by 75%. Characters with base hit rate of 255% are unaffected, such as Squall and Seifer, however, Blind disables the gunblade's trigger making them unable to deal additional damage." So yeah, apparently so. Minor edit warring?

Seems people can't decide on the wording of the intro to the Musical Themes section. Should it read 'Squall's theme is considered to be the song The Oath', or 'Officially Final Fantasy VIII does not feature character themes the same way previous Final Fantasy games did, thus Squall has no official theme to his character. The musical theme The Oath'? Personally I prefer the latter, as it gives more insight into the relation between Squall and The Oath, but this probably should be left to democracy. Well Uematsu has said in some interview that it was a conscious decision not to have character themes in FFVIII, so I don't think we can say that's his theme. It could still be mentioned being played in certain relevant scenes.Keltainentoukokuu 02:53, February 10, 2012 (UTC)
Only Laguna has a dedicated musical theme: this is so because he protagonizes the dream sequences which use that theme prominently. Music in VIII is entirely based on the events taking place, not singular elements such as locations or characters. Also, many fans say "Maybe I'm A Lion" is attributed to Squall, which is just as false. - Henryacores^ 22:26, February 10, 2012 (UTC)

Scars

Sorry if this has been adressed somewhere but...I have a problem with this sentence in his Appearance area: "In a duel with his rival, Seifer, they both end up giving each other mirroring scars."

I don't believe that he gave Seifer that scar, at least not during that battle or he likely would have been in the Infirmary too. Plus we didn't see him give him that scar during that battle, so I'm wondering where that info is coming from? Xelestial (talk) 20:08, August 15, 2012 (UTC)

Seifier doesn't have the scar during the battle, and he does directly afterwards, the next time we see him. The battle ends with Squall's blade slashing upwards directly across Seifer's face. We don't see a splatter of blood, but the implication is obvious. Espritduo (talk) 20:29, August 15, 2012 (UTC)

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Character Pages

I'm considering creating individual character pages (see Dissidia character pages, Final Fantasy Tactics character pages, and, to a lesser extent, Kingdom Hearts character pages) for the Theatrhythm Final Fantasy character appearances due to the size of information, such as charts and images, available. Netherith (talk) 03:48, August 16, 2012 (UTC)

We don't have individual pages for Tactics to my knowledge, we only have pages for the unique jobs that characters like Cloud and Vaan have. I don't think individual ones for TFF are needed, it's just stat lists, ability lists, and quote lists, the latter can go on a subpage but the former two are fine on the parent. If and when the lvl chart is extended to its fullest (I believe there is another page that has a character's full Theatrhythm stats per level) and fill the rest of the ability pages out, the Theatrhythm section is going to be the largest in the Other Appearances section. It is already the only section that has charts despite other sections (Kingdom Hearts, Dissidia, Chocobo Racing) warranting them. My largest arguement is that it is now out of place from the visual layout and a character page is warranted due to the amount of info and the fact that it is a seperate game (although an arguement could be made that since it is Dissidia Squall, it should go into an Other Appearances section on the Dissidia Squall page). The character page can then include the quotes, negating the need for a subpage. Netherith (talk) 04:06, August 16, 2012 (UTC)
We already have a TFF quotes page. I should know, I started it.
As for stats, I see no reason they can't go on another page. All together, though; we do not need subpages per character; they simply do not have anything like the same quantity of information that Dissidia characters do. And we don't really need the stats for every level on the wiki, either. I don't think we have that for Dissidia. Leave that level of detail to GameFAQs (hell, we could set up a wiki GameFAQs account, if we wanted to), and link to it, while only having stats for a few key levels on the wiki.
And no, it is not Dissidia Squall. It's VIII Squall -- Sorceror Nobody Flan 22:53, August 16, 2012 (UTC)

Height 2

Regarding Squall's height in his info table, can we keep his height as just 5'10"? If the Ultimania retconned the heights for all characters, then surely it'd make more sense rather than having two heights, since in-game I see a clear difference to his height compared to Quistis and Seifer. All the other VIII characters have their correct heights in their info boxes, just saying. Vapor Rub (talk) 14:18, May 30, 2014 (UTC)

He has a different height for Japanese and the localized versions, so both should be in the table. That should be the case for all FFVII and FFVIII character infoboxes.Keltainentoukokuu (talk) 17:44, May 30, 2014 (UTC)
