Images
Edit
If people would so kindly do so, do list what all images we'll be needing that AREN'T on this page (or the wiki) yet. I can try to get some of those that we don't have (only from FFI-IX. I can do NES/SNES/PS/GBA for all of them so that's no big problem for me). This is to make it easier for myself to know what exactly we need to get, as well for others who want to try to snag the various screenshots. We might even need to split the gallery up some more for each individual section if we're to include more than just the main menu screen, such as Status screens and Party screens. | |||
In an ideal world there would be a page for at least each commonly recurring (~four or more times) menu option. Each page would just be expanding what's on here, but also considering each individual game for that particular sub-menu/option. 79.69.197.225 19:55, December 29, 2011 (UTC)
- Though a lot of that is pretty much explained on here. That's the problem with having sub-pages for them unless there is something unique about them. I'm not against it, but dunno if it'll work out exactly as planned.
- Regardless, still need that list of images here, after all is uploaded and whatnot, for each section! Xenomic 19:58, December 29, 2011 (UTC)
- Screen is different in every game, and there are differences in every game. Status screen is never the same. Different things are featured, different pages/frames within the status screen, different ways to navigate pages. Things like Order may seem similar in every game, but IV works differently. And there aren't always rows in every game. Also sometimes it's just interesting to know what games things are in, or not in. Since the current Menu page doesn't list all games that have each option- on each individual page would be a list.
I think just example images of what the menu looks like in each version of the game is good. Having too many images just makes the gallery impossible.Keltainentoukokuu 20:17, December 29, 2011 (UTC)
- Aye. An image of every version of every game's main screen of the menu is all that should be on the gallery of the page. 79.69.197.225 20:21, December 29, 2011 (UTC)
- Well alrighty then. Otherwise it'll end up like Attack has, which is kinda my fault actually ^^;; Xenomic 20:23, December 29, 2011 (UTC)
- I didn't manage to find shots of all the main menu screens, so some are from submenus. Dirge of Cerberus, Grimoire of the Rift, 4 Heroes of Light...basically the spin-offs. And I couldn't find a proper FFXIII main menu screen, so the one on the page is from a hacked game, so it has characters that aren't normally playable.Keltainentoukokuu 20:29, December 29, 2011 (UTC)
- I couldn't find an image of DoC's menu so I assumed it didn't have one. From watching vids I get the impression you can shop at the start of each chapter, which isn't the same thing as a menu. Though you have an inventory so I don't know how that would be accessible. I need to play DoC sometime. 79.69.197.225 20:41, December 29, 2011 (UTC)

Rename Article
Edit
Shouldn't this be called Main Menu, the games refer to it as such. From the top of my head, FFVI refers to it as the Main Menu (Beginner's house), as so does FFIV if I recall correctly (Beginner's house too). Also FFIX too. Fenrir9 20:47, December 29, 2011 (UTC)
- I was thinking about the name.
- But "Main Menu" usually refers to the start menu (which is also usually referred to as the Start Menu).
- The term "main menu" usually refers to the first menu from which all options are picked. In FF, this would be the startup menu. The only context in which "main menu" makes sense is when you are making reference to the main menu and its sub-menus.
- If you aren't making reference to the first menu when talking about its submenus, then it is just a menu.
- So while a select few games may call it "Main Menu", from a logical perspective I say it doesn't make sense.
- I also understand game's have a bazillion menus but this menu is what is usually referred to as "Menu". 79.69.197.225 21:02, December 29, 2011 (UTC)
- Actually, FFVII's euro manual refers to the start menu as the "Main Menu". The PC manual makes no reference to a "Main Menu" but calls this menu the "Menu screen" (and so does the Euro manual). I might check other manuals. 79.69.197.225 21:05, December 29, 2011 (UTC)
I think "Menu" is the best name for this article, because it's about the whole menu function rather than just the start menu screen.Keltainentoukokuu 21:15, December 29, 2011 (UTC)
AFAIK, these are all US manuals. I have UK/Euro manuals downstairs but that's a mission.
- FFVIII (US/UK) - "Title Screen" for start menu, "Menu Screen" for menu.
- FFIX - "Title Screen" for start menu, "Menu Screen/Main Menu" for menu.
- FFX - "Start Menu" for start menu, "Main Menu/Menu" for menu
- FFX-2 - "Start Menu" for start menu, "Menu/Main Menu" for menu
- FFXII - ""Title Screen" for start menu, Party Menu" for menu
- FFVI(FFIII/SNES) - Start menu never referred to, "Subscreen" for menu
- FFI (NES) - "CONTINUE/NEW GAME screen", "status screen" for menu
- FFTA - "Title Screen" for start menu, "system menu" for menu (I assume)
- FFOrigins - "Title Screen" for start menu, "main menu" for menu
- FFMQ - "Title Screen" for start menu, "Main Menu" for menu
- FFIII - "Title Menu" for start menu, "menu" for menu
- FFIV(FFII/SNES) - "Title Screen" for start menu, "Menu Screen" for menu
- DoS - "Title Screen" for start menu, "Main Menu" for menu
- Chronicles - "Title Screen" for start menu, "Main Menu" for menu
- Anthology - "Title Screen" for start menu", "Menu Screen" for menu.
- DoC - "Title Menu" for start menu, "Main Menu" for menu.
- Tactics - "Title Screen" for start menu, "Menu window/Status screen"
- CrystChron - "title screen" for start menu, "Main Menu" for menu.
What I have just proved is that everything's inconsistent, but there is only one manual that has referred to the title screen as the "Main Menu", and a lot more time is the in-game menu known as the "Main Menu". 79.69.197.225 21:42, December 29, 2011 (UTC)

Aww... I was gonna nominate this to be the next Featured Article, but it has a stub section at the top. And since I'm too lazy to fix it myself... WHY, FFWiki? WHY? This was meant to be a joke. No article is perfect. Don't get offended and/or take this seriously plz.(Cat + meow)(RC + Sbox) = FFW 21:33, February 1, 2012 (UTC)
Additional Subpages per Game?
Edit
So akin to what is currently going to be done for List of Statuses and List of Elements per game, perhaps we'd like to have something for Menus per game? I can easily get screenshots of the menus from the first IX games if need be, since we already have quite a few of the menu images on the wiki, but up to you guys if you think this is a good idea or not. I could potentially whip up something for FFVII in ze Sandbox of mine later if we decide to attempt this.

Good idea, I can help with FFVIII, FFIX, FFX, FFX-2, FFXII, FFXIII, and FFXIII-2, if there'll be need. Would we cover submenus as well?
| |||
... I'm moderately on the fence about this.
Mainly because we have no coverage of menu items as of right now.
I think we should start making pages for each recurring menu item and then giving them an Appearances list before we make full articles for each game's menu. Okayynot (talk) 21:41, October 17, 2012 (UTC)
So yeah, bringing this back up. And also on the subject of this page, if we're NOT going to do subpages, we should at least split the gallery up for each of the subsections perhaps, so that all of the Menu stuff can be placed there (for instance, Main Menu, Config Menu, Status Screens, etc.).
