FFVII Super Nova

Super Nova in Final Fantasy VII.

A blast of such despair that it can send destruction even into other dimensions.

Menu description of Sephiroth's EX Burst, Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy

Supernova (スーパーノヴァ, Sūpānova?), sometimes referred to as Super Nova or Nova, is a recurring enemy ability. It generally deals a large amount of non-elemental magic damage to all opponents. The same spell is also used by several enemies as a powerful move intended to finish off the player party.

Appearances

Final Fantasy VII

Template:Sideicon Super Nova is a powerful attack used by Safer∙Sephiroth. Its animation in the original Japanese version was short and it didn't deal fractional damage, instead dealing damage in the ~2000 range. The animation was greatly extended in the world-wide release, and the attack's properties were changed. The extended Super Nova animation is the longest in the game, showing the destruction of most of the planets (Saturn, despite losing it rings is spared from destruction, as well as Uranus, Neptune and Mars) in the solar system by use of a comet that originated from outside the Milky Way.

The extended version of Super Nova inflicts massive damage and status effects, but cannot actually kill a target as it does Gravity-based damage reducing the player's HP by 15/16th of their current HP, and may cause Confuse, Silence, and Slow. The attack can be used more than once by Safer∙Sephiroth and accompanies every use of the move Pale Horse.

In Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-, it is said that Super Nova is Sephiroth's Limit Break, by a Sephiroth fan in the Sector 6 park.

Final Fantasy X

Template:Sideicon Nova deals massive non-elemental damage. It can be learned by Kimahri as a Ronso Rage Overdrive by using Lancet on the Omega Weapon in the Omega Ruins or Nemesis in Monster Arena. If Nova lands a critical hit, it is the most powerful attack in the game, although due to dealing only a single hit its power is dampened by the damage limit.

Rikku can also mix Sunburst; which was called Supernova in the Japanese version. Some sources incorrectly claim it deals two hits of 9999, but it is in fact a single hit for 19,998.

Nemesis can also use a version of the spell called Armageddon which instantly kills the party as it deals 99,999 points of damage.

Final Fantasy X-2

Template:Sideicon Supernova, known in the Japanese version as Insanity Sun, inflicts a large amount of non-elemental magic damage on all of target party for 70 MP. It's a Blue Bullet that can be learned while wearing the Gun Mage dressphere and can be learned from the Ultima Weapon.

Final Fantasy XI

Template:Sideicon Supernova is an ability used by Shinryu. Aside from inflicting magical damage in an area of effect, it also inflicts Doom on players caught in range.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

Template:Sideicon Ereshkigal can use Super Nova in battle. In the final battle against Bhunivelze's third form, he uses an ability called Hypernova, which is based on Supernova. Hypernova deals heavy damage and dispels all status effects and status ailments from himself and Lightning.

Final Fantasy XIV

Template:Sideicon Nael Deus Darnus can use Super Nova when fought in Turn 09 of the Binding Coil of Bahamut.

Ruination to all.

Sephiroth

Super Nova is Sephiroth's EX Burst. Its animation is similar to its Final Fantasy VII incarnation, although the animation is much shorter. It consists of Sephiroth posing while the mathematical formula used in the original attack is shown.

If the player completes the EX Burst correctly the enemy is thrown into the expanding sun. Scenes like the comet appearing, the solar system being destroyed, and the sun exploding are not present. If the player fails to fill the bar entirely, Sephiroth simply performs an exploding slash with his katana. Super Nova is labeled as a Limit Break in this game.

Template:Sideicon Super Nova returns as Sephiroth's EX Burst. On perfect execution it has slightly less power than in Dissidia, but is otherwise identical.

Etymology

Nova means "new" in Latin. A nova is a cataclysmic nuclear explosion caused by the accretion of hydrogen onto the surface of a white dwarf star. Supernovae are extremely luminous and cause a burst of radiation that often briefly outshines an entire galaxy, before fading from view over several weeks or months. During the 16th century, astronomer Tycho Brahe observed the supernova SN 1572 in the constellation Cassiopeia, describing it in his book De stella nova (Latin for "concerning the new star"), giving rise to the name nova.

Trivia

Formula-ffvii-supernova

Formula.

  • The equations used at the start of Sephiroth's Super Nova are of no coincidence and are genuine equations used in Astrophysics. They are as follows:
The first two equations calculate the sun's and planet's potential attractive forces, however it incorrectly uses gamma instead of lambda. The third equation calculates the Earth's potential attractive forces and the fourth misstates that the asteroid is working on a two-dimensional level, as it is the equation for the area of a circle, all to direct the energy used to cause the supernova. However, it should be noted that the sun cannot actually supernova, being too small to explode in such a fashion.
Ptolemaic system.
  • Ptolemy's diagram of the celestial spheres, also known as the classical planets, or the "Seven Heavens", is used in the Super Nova animation. Since there are seven, this can be seen as another allusion the game has to the number seven.
    • Pluto is among the planets destroyed by Super Nova, as it was still considered a planet until eight years after the game's release. However, neither Pluto, Neptune, nor Uranus had been discovered when Ptolemy conceived of the celestial spheres.
