In a time before the world knew castles or kingdoms, a star fell to the land now called Kashuan. A man gathered flame from the star and built an altar to enshrine it.

The Sunfire (太陽の炎, Taiyō no Honō?, lit. Sun's Fire) is a key item from Final Fantasy II. A fire said to come from the sun itself, the people of Kashuan have protected it for many years. It is their nation's symbol.

History[]

A legend states that a star fell to the earth long before any civilization was built. A man found this star and took some fire from it. He then built a shrine around it, this becoming the Kashuan Keep. To make sure no one could steal it, the only means of carrying it, Egil's Torch, was sealed further inside the keep. The passages leading to the Torch were further protected by a barrier that could only be dissolved by the Goddess's Bell.

Every three years, a ceremony takes place in Kashuan in which the Sunfire is passed to Egil's Torch while the brazier is cleansed, apparently to ensure that it will keep burning.

The Power of Sunfire[]

Dreadnought Destruction

The Sunfire destroys the Dreadnought.

Once the Dreadnought had been finished, the party needed a way to destroy it. Cid knows that the only thing that can destroy it is Sunfire.

The party travel to Kashuan and manage to retrieve some of the fire using Egil's Torch. With it, they get aboard the Dreadnought and reach the airship's main core. Before the Dark Knight can intervene, Firion throws the Sunfire into the engine. The power of the flame overloads the engine, annihilating the entire warship. Before the Dreadnought explodes, the entire party, as well as an impostor Princess Hilda and the Dark Knight, are able to escape. Even after this, the Sunfire remains in the party's inventory, until it can be properly returned to Kashuan.

Etymology[]

The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System and is by far the most important source of energy for life on Earth. It is a nearly perfect sphere of hot plasma, with internal convective motion that generates a magnetic field via a dynamo process.
