Summon Materia first appeared in Final Fantasy VII. It works very similar to Magic Materia; all cost MP to use, and equipping any Summon Materia adds the Summon command to a characters' commands menu. However, Summon Materia is typically more unique and much harder to find than Magic Materia. The player can only obtain one "fresh" version of every Summon Materia with exception to Master Summon and Phoenix (due to a programming oversight).[A] Other Summon Materia can be obtained in multiple ways, but the game will only allow the player to have one so the other methods will be removed. A player can still have multiple versions of the other Summon Materia through mastering. All Summon Materia sells for only 1 gil.

Unlike other Materia subsets, Summon Materia in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children does see use, though only to summon Bahamut SIN, when used by Kadaj. Cloud Strife along with many others eventually fight and defeat Bahamut SIN during the battle in Edge.

In Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-, Summon Materia is not used in battle, nor can it be equipped. Instead, acquiring a Summon Materia item adds its portrait to the Summon Mode of the Digital Mind Wave, which allows it to then summoned into battle automatically when its portrait lines up on the reels.

Other traditional summons can be acquired to the DMW, but they are acquired by collecting items other than Materia. The DMW differentiates between these two types of summons by grouping those acquired through methods other than Materia into "Chocobo Mode".

As with all DMW attacks, the power of the Summon depends on the attack level.

Trivia

  • Summon Materia are the only type of Materia that can never be bought in Final Fantasy VII.
  • Shiva is the only Summon Materia the player obtains through storyline in Final Fantasy VII. Despite this it can still be missed, as if one's Materia inventory is full at the moment it's meant to be given the player will not be given the Materia, and instead can optionally pick it up later.
  • If the player's Materia inventory is full, the Kujata Materia will be lost forever. Usually if a player attempts to pick up a Materia when the inventory is full, the game will notify the player and ask them to remove Materia first. Due to poor programming this never happens with Kujata; the player merely receives the message that they have acquired the Materia, but upon entering the Materia inventory the Materia is not there, as there was no room to place it in.
