Chapter 1: Blank Slate

As an amnesiac man arrives in Palamecia on a stream of light, a mysterious voice introduces itself as "Vox" and explains his ties to the past are no longer valid in the world he is arriving. The man lies on a beach in a strange world with a sword at his hand, many others beside him. Monsters emerge and the disembodied voice of Vox speaks of a law of Palamecia: "None shall remember the names of those who do not fight". After the men fight the monsters, Vox asks their names. The man remembers his name is Wol, but the others men remember having the same name. Vox explains that name carries a special meaning, as it is the name of a hero foretold to bring hope to Palamecia: the Warrior of Light, and that one of the men will become that hero.

Considering the new arrivals "blank slates", Vox names them Blanks and advises them to go north. An armor-clad man appears to reiterate Vox's words. Vox introduces Wol a new law: "Your mettle is constantly being tested." As Wol continues his journey he comments on how everything feels like home despite his memory loss.

In Plains of Cornelia, Wol spots a struggling moogle and is encouraged by the armor-clad man to help him. The man explains no one else will help, citing a law of Palamecia, "None pay heed to those without the will to fight". He introduces himself as Garland and explains his role is to temper Blanks that show prospect of becoming the Warrior of Light. Moogles share a common mind and saving one will make all moogles indebted to him. Wol saves the moogle, who introduces himself as Mog, and vows to protect his new "Master".

Mog takes Wol to Warhaven to rest where they meet two Blanks discussing how many kills they have gotten. Mog explains that some Blanks use the feelings they get from the rush of battle to fill the void in their hearts, and so become addicted to doing battle. Mog wants to take Wol to the Runic Temple at Plains of Cornelia as per the prophecy. They meet some Blanks who guard a temple, who fill the void in their hearts with duty and the feeling they get from helping others, which causes them to forget to move forward. Once Wol and Mog reach the Runic Temple, Wol battles a series of monsters to clear the way to the Intercrystal. When Wol touches the crystal an image of Princess Sarah. As Wol vows to fight for the people of Palamecia, Sarah bestows upon him a boon of House Cornelia and wishes to meet him someday. Sarah is in a faraway place, but the crystal's magic allowed her to grant Wol the power of her House, the ability to use teleport crystals.

As Mog and Wol travel to Castle Cornelia to use the teleport stone to close the distance between them and the princess, a strange light dances around Wol. He at first thinks it is Vox, but time stops and he hears a female voice chastising him for such an insulting presumption. A tiny winged girl called Echo congratulates Wol for being chosen, and introducing herself as his guide as per destiny. Mog is unaware of what happened, and Wol realizes he cannot see Echo. Mog says Echo is a field faerie who offers guidance to travelers and promises to lead them to great treasures, but instead leads them to great peril or even death. Mog mentions nobody has ever seen her, and that she appears as a formless voice.

Wol learns the world is slowly dying because of Chaos and his monsters, and deduces the Warrior of Light's mission is to defeat him. They meet Garland who warns Wol about women after hearing he had spoken to Sarah. Mog advises Wol to ignore Garland as he is a heretic, and that everything will work out if Wol follows the prophecy. Vox orders the Blanks to kill Garland, but he kills a group of them in one blow. When Wol encounters Garland again he says he is watching Wol to ensure he doesn't stray.

The way to the castle is blocked by two Blanks who tell Wol it is because of a cockatrice. Wol smells mold, and wonders if it comes from the Blanks. Wol kills the cockatrice, impressing the Royal Guards who urge Wol to join them instead of being caught up in the fantasy of being the Warrior of Light. Wol and Mog arrive at the ruins of Castle Cornelia that has an old painting of Princess Sarah. Wol thinks the painting stinks and wants to leave. Wol touches the teleportation stone that takes him to Crownforge in a stream of light.

Chapter 2: Hope and Prophecy

They arrive at a desert, and Mog tells Wol about an old Palamecian legend of royals being driven away to travel the sands to make them stronger. Mog doesn't know where they are, but claims not to be worried as he knows what to do from the prophecy, which says they need to find the Runic Temple and receive the blessing from its crystal. He recalls hearing about keys hidden among the sands. They find a key in the Temple Fringe, and Mog states Wol needs to find four keys to gain access to the Runic Temple. Wol comments on how quickly such specific information came to the moogle, and Mog explains it is because all moogles have a common mind, sharing their experiences and knowledge.

As events in the prophecy are fulfilled, paths in the desert open. Mog wants Wol to promise to remember him, which he does. As Mog goes on ahead to look for the path, Echo reminds Wol about one of the laws of Palamecia: "None shall remember the names of those who do not fight", and points out Mog doesn't fight. Wol says that although others might not remember Mog, he will.

Obtaining the fourth key involves the Wol Namesgiving Tournament, where Blanks fight for the right to claim the name "Wol", and the main prize, as per the prophecy, is a key to the Runic Temple. The tournament has been held many times, with the victor most likely becoming the Warrior of Light and going off to fight Chaos. Wol surmises those Warriors of Light were killed by Chaos, but Mog avoids answering Wol's questions about their fate. Wol wins the qualifying tournament matches, earning the right to compete. One of of the finalists is injured and Wol is asked to compete in the final match in his place. Wol's opponent in the final round collapses after the first attack, complaining about his wound reopening, and Wol is declared the winner, fulfilling the requirements of the prophecy. Wol and Mog gain the last key, but Wol is suspicious of the results of the tournament, and asks what would have happened if he hadn't shown up. Mog replies that there wouldn't have been a victor, so they would have had to start the tournament all over again, and theorizes that they have been holding the tournament over and over until someone won in a way that fulfilled the prophecy. Wol doesn't think it makes sense, but Mog says it doesn't matter. He asks the other moogles whether there is anything else they need to know regarding the prophecy and receives distressing news, but pretends everything is fine.

Mog and Wol journey through the Runic Temple towards the Rune Crystal. They come across Lich, one of the fiends Chaos has tasked with guarding the Crystals. After the second encounter with the Lich, Mog gives Wol lots of advice, as if it is the last time he will see him, and gets mad when Wol says it is too much to remember. During the third encounter, Mog attempts to fight, reciting a part of the prophecy that states a friend is supposed to protect the Warrior of Light in battle, but Wol pushes him aside and fights the Lich instead. After the fourth and final battle, Mog insists to deliver the final blow and flies into the Lich in a killing blow, but is hit in return. Mog confesses he was supposed to sacrifice himself so the key would reveal itself to the Warrior of Light, as told in the prophecy. Mog dies while telling Wol he will always be a friend to the moogles.

Garland approaches Wol to lead him to converse with Princess Sarah and to the next teleport stone. Wol touches the Rune Crystal to find Princess Sarah's image waiting for him. She knew Wol would lose Mog, and Wol is initially upset by her lack of sorrow. He asks if he will lose anyone dear to him again, and she explains he will meet and part with many people. Garland says he will guide Wol the rest of the way to the castle. When Wol questions him on his role in the prophecy, Garland explains he had refused to side with either good or evil, and was declared a heretic as a result. Garland reveals his face and warns that should Wol fail in his quest, he will simply find another Blank to use.

Wol worries whether his actions will also put Echo in danger. Echo affirms, but posits she is tough and stubborn, and thus will be fine. At the teleport crystal, Garland says it will take them to the Last Stand in a stream of light. Wol decides to go along with the prophecy, but feels something is off, and is left wondering if the prophecy and Princess Sarah are what they seem.

Chapter 3: Chaos and the Crown

Garland accompanies Wol to Princess Sarah's castle, while telling him not to lose his heart to her. When Chaos mounts an assault on the castle, Garland travels with Wol across the battlefield, offering advice and observations as they watch countless Blanks throw their lives away. After Wol drives Chaos back, Garland takes him to meet Sarah who reveals the final part of the prophecy states that after defeating Chaos, the Warrior of Light is destined to wed her. She had been worried about that portion of the prophecy, but after meeting Wol, she is happy to marry him. Garland insists it's time to move on, and when Sarah asks Garland for his name, he refuses to answer. When it comes time for Wol to move on, she declares to wait for him to return. Garland parts company with Wol, stating that he's held his hand for long enough.

Sarah meets Wol at the teleport stone, stating that if she must wait for him to defeat Chaos, she would rather do it by his side than at the castle. They use the teleport stone to depart together. Wol ends up in a "world between dimensions" where Sarah is not with him, and fights through a series of trials as Vox wants to see if he is worthy of vying for the title of "Warrior of Light." He succeeds, and while Echo trash-talks Vox, it turns out Vox can hear her.

Wol moves on to a valley-like area where he is again with Sarah. They make their way to Mogheim, a moogle village where Mowg guides Wol through the land. After noticing Wol has grown in power, Chaos comes after him. Mowg tries to hold Wol back, saying his safety is more important. Mowg gets a message from the other moogles and tells Wol "they'll hold it off". Confirming his worries, Mowg later says they're declaring goodbye. Realizing Chaos is targeting Mogheim, Wol gets disturbed because he doesn't want more moogles to die because of him.

Wol intercepts Chaos, but not before the latter kills several moogles who attempted to delay him, including Mowg. Heartbroken, Wol realizes Chaos is trying to break him with the despair of his friends' deaths and refuses to fall victim to Chaos's dirty tactics. Chaos summons Marilith to stop him, whom Wol defeats. Vox teleports Chaos away. Left alone on the battlefield, Wol asks for Garland, for Vox, for anyone, to tell him what he should do next.

Sarah reunites with Wol, unconsciously carried by Garland. They head to land's border, where they see an island in the sky, a place Wol is destined to go to. Wol heads to the teleport stone alone, but Sarah gives him a tied up yellow handkerchief. Noticing a light in Sarah’s heart that no one else can see, Wol heads to the island.

Chapter 4: Doubt and Illusion

Chapter 5: The First Warrior

On the island Wol is greeted by a moogle who says his master is waiting. Heading up to the top of the plateau, an old man is sitting on a throne who bids Wol to revisit the past with him. Calling himself Cid, he is the first Warrior of Light—Wol's predecessor.

Long ago there was a village called Palamecia. Cid and his younger brother, Mid, were close with a girl named Sarah. A noble called Chaos called for her hand in marriage, but she refused, as she was in love with Cid, though only Mid noticed. Chaos cut off the village's water supply. To save the village, Sarah agreed to the marriage, but this was not enough for Chaos, as it was clear she was not truly in love with him.

A figure named Voyce (Vox in human form) informed Lord Chaos of rumors that spread about him around Palamecia. He suggested that to win Lady Sarah's heart, who had feelings for a young village swordsman, Chaos should organize a tournament in which he would best him. Influenced by "Voyce", Cid entered the tournament to save Sarah.

Fighting through the first few participants, Cid got suspicious, as it seemed they were losing on purpose. After sending Mid to investigate, Cid found him dead, murdered by Chaos's men. Cid pursued Chaos's men until the only match left was between Cid and Chaos. Knowing Cid was a threat, Chaos ordered his men to beat him until he would be weak enough to guarantee Chaos's victory. Though Cid defeated countless enemies, they whittled him down, and beat him until he was barely able to walk, confident that he would lose to Chaos in that state.

Sarah agreed to marry Chaos so Cid would be spared, but later attempted to commit suicide, thinking that her death would stop the needless suffering. Cid stopped her, and promised to bring hope to the village. Vox announced to the village that Wol would save them, kill Chaos and deliver them from the crisis. As the villagers cast away their despair and started to gain hope, Cid saw their hearts light up as one, marking the birth of the Warrior of Light.

Before the fight, Sarah gave Cid a protective charm, the same one that the current Sarah gave Wol. Backed by the rest of the village, Cid dueled Chaos and, albeit losing an eye, killed him. Unbeknownst to the villages, Chaos's body sank into the earth in a pool of darkness. From here on the village was continually attacked by monsters, said to be born of Chaos's evil soul and to be Chaos's curse. As time passed the monsters became simply called "Chaos", after the evil noble that had supposedly caused them to appear.

After hearing the story, Wol discovers what the Warrior of Light really is: a warrior who brings hope to the people of Palamecia in a period of crisis by defeating Chaos. Every time Chaos is vanquished a brief period of light begins, but Palamecia is destined to fall again into darkness. When despair falls new warriors from different worlds are called, without memory of who they were or where they came from, to Palamecia, in the hopes one of them would become the new Warrior of Light and defeat Chaos. Sensing this, Cid sent Sarah away to a faraway world to protect her with the letters Wol had found belonging to her, as she still sends Cid love letters from another world.

Chapter 6: Bewitching Memories

The sorceress Meia is known as the "witch of heresy", and is being pursued by the summoned beasts of Palamecia as she is forever doomed to be chased due to her existence being a threat to the Palamecian rule. She is guided by a manifestation of Echo who is colder than Wol's, but still represents the will of Palamecia. Fighting her way through, she defeats the summoned beasts but becomes exhausted and is about to give up when Wol comes in with Echo and saves her.

Wol's entrance reminds Meia of the time she was saved by a previous "Warrior of Light" candidate. This memory conjures an illusion of him, called Swordsman, that serves as their enemy as they navigate through the realm. The use of his appearance is intentional: to torment Meia by making her recall her painful past.

The Swordsman and Meia used to be lovers, but the prophecy states that the Warrior of Light will defeat Chaos and marry the princess. Meia tried to distance herself from the warrior, but he persisted, and convinced Sarah to acknowledge his love for Meia, thus breaking the prophecy. Believing that anyone with the light of hope in their hearts is a Warrior of Light, not just one chosen warrior, he vowed to find a way to solve the crisis of Chaos without relying on the prophecy by coming up with his own answer and a new kind of hope. Vox did not approve, and planted suspicion towards the warrior and Meia in the minds of other Blanks, causing them to band against him, saying that to defy the prophecy is heresy and they must kill Meia, the reason for the heresy. They were cornered at the same bridge Chaos was killed at in the past and were cut down and thrown into the river, but ended up floating in the stream. Meia would have been content to float away forever together, but something brought her back. She washed up on the same shore as the Blanks, having become a new Meia now branded the Witch of Heresy.

After being forced to relive her past, Meia and Wol arrive at the place where the illusion awaits. Meia comes to peace with her past thanks to Wol's encouragement and the two defeat the illusion, which fades away. Wol thinks about just obeying the prophecy, but the two agree that the fallen warrior was right, and that anyone with the light of hope in their hearts can be the Warrior of Light, even the fallen Meia. Hopeful, they move on to the next area together.

Wol recalls how Vox told his name is special, as it's the name of the Warrior of Light that will save Palamecia. As there are many other Blanks who bear the same name, Wol wonders why him, and not any other Blank. When Wol and Meia meet Vox he explains the difference: the light of hope in the populace was brought about by Wol's strength and victories, setting him apart from the other Blanks, and what makes him the Warrior of Light.

Wol finds himself in front of a crystal. Vox is showing his journey to the rest of the world, and Wol sarcastically asks him about the time he said he didn't see the light in him. Vox responds that it was an encouragement and that he had found that light. He sends Wol to relive his first moments in Palamecia. As he returns to the real world, he is forced to defeat more enemies to inspire the people cheering him on. After he finds several crystals and defeats Chaos multiple times, Vox continues to summon enemies for Wol to defeat.

Chapter 7: The Light of Hope

Making their way to face Chaos, Wol discovers along the way that they all have been following Vox designs from the very beginning, as Palamecia is serving as an engine to send hope for other despairing worlds, as the destroyed form of Chaos becomes a sea of darkness that spreads over the planet and wipe everyone's memories, allowing people to Hope for the destruction of Chaos continuously. Sarah is also not actually human, but part of Palamecia, made to fill the role of the princess of prophecy. This extends even through Garland and Meia, even if they thought they were acting on their own free will. When Wol realizes this, and seeing all that light chaneling to him to defeat Chaos is nothing but another trick, they turn against Wol.

Final Chapter: Closing the Loop

At the pyramid, the group, joined by Serah, faces and successfully defeats Chaos in its full power. Congratulating the group, Vox invites them to pass through the Gate of Hope, now carrying the sparks of hope generated by the people of Palamecia and spreading it to other worlds. However, Echo notes Vox's eagerness on their departure and concludes this in order to get rid of him before he becomes a liability. Truly, as they speak, Chaos is already reforming, and Vox denies Sarah's departure, as she is to perform her role in the prophecy. Seeing this, Echo tries to tell Wol that Chaos can be truly defeated, but having served her intended purpose, she is effectively destoyed before doing so.

Wol ultimately defies the cycle and chooses to stay and inspires Sarah to help him in destroying Chaos permanently, breaking the loop. As a result, since Vox's prophecy is ruined and his purpose to perpetuate it is negated, he is destroyed along with the gate.

Thus, despite liberating Palamecia, all of the hope has been sucked from the planet and the world is now in a state of despair over coming to terms with the realization of their world. Realizing this, Wol, Meia and Sarah declare they still have a lot to do to protect Palamecia from slipping further into darkness.

In a post-credits scene, the three are apparently being transported to another world, and subsequently encased in crystals.
